I see that Ken Shuman (A great Emcee) is doing the US Open as well as most of the major events in the US. What happened to Scott Smith? I always enjoyed him as an Emcee also!

I don't think Scott does this anymore. Haven't seen him on the major tournament trail for a long time.

Scott did a solid job in his day but, to me, Ken Shuman is a step up in virtually every aspect of the job.

Hope Scott is well.

He's hunkered down here in CO to live it out, and plays leagues etc. and does well. I do miss his earlier days of announcing and match intros. He cut his before the Boxing announcer....''lets get ready to rumble'' made it big. I always felt Scott was equal to that man in many more ways and Scott could of written and implemented the ''big deal'' and taken the game to the next level. He HAD that ability and character and business smarts, and Could Play, which are Not common traits of a pool player. He is Always a bright light in a dingy room.

Character?

Scott smith and the word character should never be in the same sentence. That Scott is no longer involved in pool is a good thing for pool. There is no place for a tournament director that takes bets on matches from players for matches that he's officiating.

Tell that to Pete Rose....

Your right, but I knew him early 70's and his first wife, before Laura B. his second and mother of his two boys. This man has always ''stirred it up'' but never with bad intentions. Mother time in the pool room had its ways and I'm no saint, but Scott had many great qualities and talents as a younger man, and had his faults. If the pros had a true organization, control over their announcers nefarious activities, would of been in place.

I know many people who enjoyed betting on U.S. Open 9-Ball Matches with Scott, et al. It was a committee of brokers hedging bets. It made it fun for some railbirds.

Long live Scott Smith.

In fact, I consider him a friend. I hope he is doing well. We love Scott Smith and all that he brings to pool -- EVERYTHING!!!!

Pool purists just better accept the fact that we action people ain't going anywhere. We live, we breathe, we are!

LONG LIVE ACTION! It is why some people enjoy pool. We don't like watching emotionless robots playing mum pool while shooting balls in the hole. In fact, some believe this is the reason pool is circling the drain. Today, pool players with no personality are not helping pool one bit. Who wants to watch them for hours and hours on the TV or livestream. YUCK!

I do not know Scott Smith and have never met him, so whatever bad qualities he has are unknown to me. I've watched many videos that have featured him as referee, and I thought he was awesome. Better than anyone else I've seen, except perhaps that English guy who used to do the epic intros for the Filipino players at the World 9-Ball in the early 00's. He was pretty great, too.

What I liked about Scott is that he seemed genuinely into the matches, and would frequently mouth "Wow, great shot" and clap for the players, as if he was just enjoying the view from the best seat in the house. Cool move.

And here I thought Scott was a natural blond.

Here is Scott giving an ESPN Radio interview at the Open. Scott Smith knows his pool game, pool players, and the industry well. He's a great speaker!

i was at the us open in 2001 and was in the midst of making a sweat bet with the book. Up walks Scott who says to the book, how we doing? The book answers ehhh....we got alot on xyz match both ways. Scott looks quickly at the numbers and there was alot bet with this gap where it was possible for the book to win everything if the match went like 11-10. Scott rubbed his hands together with emphasis and shouted OH BABY JUST ONE TIME LET ME MIDDLE EM! I thought it was pretty funny at the time and Scott just came off to me as a guy who likes action, something most of us who play pool do as well. I do understand what is being said about officiating matches where your taking action, but nonetheless I still liked having him around. I hope he is doing well and still playing pool. I saw him play at Qmasters and he looked like he could play pretty good.

Wow.... same guy? LOL

Ken Shuman is awesome. From what I've seen he's a great official, TD, and he knows his way around the commentary booth as well. That said I miss seeing Scott Smith at the DCC when we go every year. I don't know him at all personally, but you could just tell he loved pool and was having a blast.

1982 Scott, myself, Billy, Jr. Harris and Scotts brother and a couple subs had a BCA 8 ball team, Wizards, won the team nationals. Stroud played good, had the high winning season average, over 900 which had never been beaten. Best players shot in the 860-870's, never over 900.
Oh, Scott also had a business card ''Have cue will Travel'' and I think he did finish 4th in the Stardust late sixties.

Scott was the best

Hate to see any big events not being done with Scott Smith not involved, great attitude, great official, great person. Nothing against Mr. Shuman but he don't have Scott's personality and positive attributes !

Bill,

Thanks for posting about that season. It is one of the things about pool I remember well and am very proud of.

Shooting over 900 was a special treat especially since we had the play the Tam'Oshanter team that had won the nationals the preceding 3 or 4 years.

I loved Scott Smith. He always treated me great. When my band Great White used to play near Colorado Springs I used to go to his room Rack & Roll and play pool. He would always kick me down with a few accu-stats tapes to watch on my tour bus while we were touring. He was a great guy and liked by many!! I miss him announcing the tournaments, though Kenny Shulman is a great guy also...
