Story I hadn't heard before about Efren

Efren won in Europe in which he didn't have his own cue and beat everybody with a house cue.

Thats messed up. Only Efren could do that. Efren is the man. Whenever i'm at the table and don't know what to do, I ask myself one simple question: WWED (What Would Efren Do)?

And then-

I ask the question-but I can't come up with an answer. And if I did-I couldn't pull it off anyway.

That man is amazing.

Mark Wilson, a good friend of Efren's, told a story one time where Efren took the shaft from his (then) wife's cue & screwed it on (I believe) Mark's butt & thought the combo felt good in his hands so he hit a few balls with it. He liked it so much that he went ahead & took it to the table when his name was called for a match...and won easily.

I don't know why this surprises anyone. If you can't shoot your game with a house cue then you should probably go practice a little more. It's more of a mental block than anything else. As long as the cue has a decent tip on it, is relatively straight, and you are comfortable with it I don't see what the big deal is. The player makes the shots, not the cue.

I am going to make a shirt that says "I can't do what Efren do."

One time I was getting a lesson from Jose Parica and Jose was telling me to hit a shot a certain way and I tried and tried and couldn't do it. He picks up my cue and hits it perfect and says "see, like this". I said Jose, I can understand what you want me to do, I can see you do it, but I can't do it. :-)

Or a T-Shirt that says "What DID Efren Do?"

:-) I don't really consider winning a tournament with a house cue to be that big a deal. I think most players could play well with a house cue if it feels good to them.

I think a lot of people forget that in the Philippine, especially when Efren was coming up they just played on whatever equipment was available with whatever was available.

I agree 100% and I would add that if u find a good house cue it will hit with any 2 piece . the hit of a good full splice house cue with a good tip is hard to beat

It surprises me because I've never heard of anybody else winning a major tournament with a cue they pulled off the wall. Have you?

Well he also won a tourney with a 20 dollar stick he picked up at a store before the tourney because his sticks were lost with luggage or something like that

Shh Mully, don't let the Predator and OB1 "fancy new shaft/aftermarket" police catch you saying it's the player not the equipment.

Then again, you might be on to something, but no one will ever belive you :)

Disclaimer, there's nothing wrong with the "after market shafts " but you won't get a stroke by switching shafts if you didn't have one before.

> The so-called "fifteen dollar" stick he came over here with is NOT the cue he won the 1994 U.S. Open with. That was by a Filipino cuemaker named Jessie. I hit a few balls with that cue and I can assure you that that particular cue was NOT junk.

The one he was said to have paid 15 bucks for was also probably made by a Filipino cuemaker. He played in the televised 1988 Brunswick World Open with that one.

Rest assured,he didn't win at Red's with some kind of Chinese/Taiwanese crap with a screw-on tip like everyone thinks.

The Jessie I refer to can be seen on Youtube by searching for the 1996 Legends final against Jim Rempe,as well as the one from the 1994 U.S Open against Nick Varner. Tommy D.
