Can't find any link here on AZB about this match, but Darren has posted this information on the Pro9 site: http://www.pro9.co.uk/html/viewtopic.php?forum=2&topic=1838

Sorry if there is already a tread about this...

8th to 10th of May, Darren Appleton and Scott Frost will play on a barbox, for 15 000 $!

Day one: Best of 5 sets in 8-ball, race to 11
Day two: Best of 5 sets in 10-ball, race to 11
Day three: Best of 5 sets in 9-ball, race to 11

I REALLY like this format, much better than a race to 100. It will be exciting all the way, both for the players and the fans!

Who do you like in this match?

Have to go with the hometown.

I have never seen Frost play, but as a big fan of Darren Appleton I like his chances.

He is used to play 8-ball on small tables (but with even tighter pockets), has a strong 10-ball game, has done good on the eurotour in 9-ball, and is used to play big money matches during his visits to both the States, Manila, but also from UK.

When it's getting closer to May I might consider betting some $$$ on Darren :)

I am working on the flyer for the Vegas matches. We have some great news to announce along with the matches. The flyer with all the info should be out in the next couple of days.

What Roy posted is accurate as far as the format is concerned. They are playing for $5000 a set with the agreement that if they split the first 2 days then the 9 ball set will be for all the money. $15,000

Frost is very strong on the boxes. I have seen him play all 3 games on the 7ft Diamonds. I am in the same boat as you though. I have never seen Appleton play.

Has the money been posted yet JCIN?

tough to get action going if nothing has been posted given the history of how these matches where the money isnt up actually go off.

Just My Opinion

I have played Scott, and I have watched Darren. Either one can win, but I would bet on Darren.

I agree with you on this format being much better. Even if only one game is played I would much rather watch the best of say seven sets of race to eleven than to watch all or a part of a race to one hundred. If someone builds a comfortable early lead in a race to one hundred, the rest of the match is anti-climatic and I think you also lose a LOT of viewers that way. Not only that, but both players may back off and stop trying so hard and the level of play can suffer too.

In a race to one hundred PPV, many people that are watching the first day, and that are paying by the day, are not going to pay for the second and third days once someone builds up a good lead. And many people that were not able to watch on the first day are not going to buy the second and third days after they have heard that someone already has a comfortable lead. And you also have a lot of people that are not available to watch all three days, and choose not to buy any days because they have little interest in seeing only a portion of the match regardless of the score, the same way they would have little interest in watching only a portion of a movie. To maximize the drama, excitement and viewership for a very long match, you must break it down into the best of several smaller races with races to nine or eleven being about the maximum size per set for nine or ten ball.

i think the greatest thing about tar is that you have to post show money.that is totally the way to do things.it reminds me of the time 3 years ago that over the phone a player i wont name that lived 900 miles from me said he would play.i said put your backer on the phone.his backer had a good rep and owned this poolhall in poplar bluff missouri.we agreed to play 6ahead 1hole for 3000.i was staking myself so it was worth the drive.anyway i took a ex pro boxer stacey with me.his record was like 43-7.fought on espn a few times.in short he was a seriously tough guy for being 46 .anyway i drive all night get there ,walk in and the guy i was supposed to play had a swollen left eye.looked like an infection.he immediate says there is no way i can play like this.i say get some antibiotics and well play in a few days.he says ill see what i can do.anyway 3 days go by ,he says i cant play .i say well i drove 900 miles and you wont, cant play.can i get 500 for my trouble.he says hell no .the boxer kind of gets in his face and says this is b.s..the guy did not know he was a pro boxer.anyway the player im referring to puts his finger in the boxers face .the boxer looks at me like can i please knock this idiot out.i gave him instructions that he cant hit anyone unless they are beating me up.or about to hurt me or i wont pay him.basically this player is lucky to not be in a coma because i was so mad at him if my friend would have blasted him i dont think i would have lost much sleep.to the guy im talking about you know who you are if you still want to play 6ahead for 3000 you got me.things like this are why show money is great .

I tend to agree. Even though I like the long, grueling race to 100, it can be anticlimactic. The multiple races would certainly increase the chance of lead changes and, I think, possibly increase PPV subscribers.

BTW I have bought just about every PPV they've had and sat there till my ass was asleep. WAY TO GO TAR!!!!!

In Uk for a few years now they have regularly had 64 player tournaments at which each player puts up entry money, usually about US$ 1,000 per head for the 'opens' and about US$ 500 for the 'amateur only' events.

In recent years these tournaments have been played by a similar sets system, best of 5 sets, race to 5 in each set. So far it's worked well for players and spectators alike, the event can be completed in a weekend and few people have had any significant criticism of it as a system. Talking about uk style 8 ball of course but possibly just as practical in American disciplines.

It might well be a system also particularly well suited to the spectator market for individual matches. The agreed number of sets and race lengths can be tweaked each time depending on whose playing and how long they want the match to last etc. No doubt some of the people in the best position to judge that one way or the other are the TAR guys. Good luck to them.

Kudos to everyone involved for getting a good format down, in a race to 100 when someone is up 25 on day two, you have a good idea how it is going to turn out, unless someone like Earl is playing.

Scott when he catches gear is an absolute monster, I havent seen Darren play that much, however something tells me this is a pick em match up.

Can't wait to watch this one!

This is a great format and I would guess that these players do know each other but maybe not that well, I have seen Frost gambling at 9-ball on a big table and even though he is known for one-hole he is a real strong 9 ball player but I have to go with DA as I am from the UK too.

This is gonna be a great match to sweat. Probably my most anticipated since the Shane/Corey match. I don't know either of the two personally, but I know several players that have unsavory stories about Scott and I like the way Darren conducts himself and like his personality. Strictly on that premise, I choose to put my money on Darren if anyone would like to bet.
