The "Riv"...

Wow not looking good for the Riveria and probably several other casinos in vegas. Thanks FB, hope all is well with you, you are definitely missed here.

Take Care

How the hell does that dump owe money. It has been there since the beginning of time and I would have thought that it has been paid for OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Fatboy, I need a place to stay in Vegas for the BCA's, those little apartments at your compound for rent?!! LOL

BCA should help

A friend of mine just told me last week she was there and it was $25 a nite. We are paying $85 a nite during the BCA.

Are you sure your friend didn't stay at Circus Circus, or maybe they had a special rate as a perk for gambling? Not too long ago someone posted on here that Circus Circus had rooms for $25 a night.

I checked out both hotels and they don't show the rates for past dates but they do show the rates per night on a calendar. Circus Circus had what appears to be flat rates while the Riviera had different rates for different types of room. I did a price comparison using the cheapest room (one king bed) that the Riviera had available.

Circus Circus is definitely cheaper per night. The cheapest nights at the Riviera was $59 while Circus Circus has rooms as low as $27 per night. The BCA rate of $85 is still cheaper than the regular room rates at the Riviera.

Here is the price comparison. Circus Circus is on the left, Riviera on the right.

Riviera Lowers room rates!!

FYI: Here is some additional info on rooms. Also remember who supported the pool industry during the 'good' times. Competing hotels do not have the costs that the Riviera does since they are hosting the pool tournament.

Subject: The Riviera has $85 rooms -- for up to 4 people per room!

The Riviera Hotel & Casino has $85 rooms … for up to 4 people per room!

Reserve Now!

YES, the rate is the same whether you reserve the room for 1, 2, 3, or 4 people.

... And the same on weekends.

Don't fall into any of the "cheap room" traps when booking Vegas. Most Las Vegas hotels charge extra for more than two adults in a room, and more on weekends. In fact, the two hotels closest to the Riviera are charging $15 and $35 (EACH!) right now for the 3rd and 4th person in a room.

So, we suggest that you get the accommodations you need at the Riviera, and DO IT NOW while your accommodations are still available. You just can’t beat being able to go upstairs for something you forgot, or for a quick break between matches.

The Riviera Hotel & Casino has done more for pool and pool players than any other hotel in the world. They know and love pool and pool players, and they leave no stone unturned to help build better pool tournaments.

AND, that is why they deserve your patronage…

Make your reservations for The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World! … at the Riviera Hotel & Casino . . . .

The Riviera has spent millions renovating the casino and the guest towers since last year. Their new "Signature Rooms" have flat screen TVs, new bathrooms, and pillow top Euro beds. ... See you in May!

I've heard that if you rent a room there and loose your job, you can stay there for the next 90 day's free.

Interesting that nearly 84% occupancy is losing money. Tough business.

Along with their debts, I wonder if this means the Riviera will be able to renegotiate some of these long term room rate contracts? From what I understand, the APA has some sort of $40 something a night rate booked many years out. Maybe the BCA has one as well, I don't know.

"He said “devastating competitive pressure on room rates” and falling convention attendance in Las Vegas..." -From the article.

Falling convention attendance is in part because of the Political climate. Much bad corporate PR for having what the press dubs as "extravagant" Conventions...The entire hospitality industry is reeling, and it's not all related to the economic downturn.

I'll help the Riv out. Make sure the GM of the hotel is there to meet me and we can walk around. I'll point out all the rude, tenured employees to him and other instances on a day to day basis on why no one thinks of it as a place to stay.

After that, we can go to Katy's and stand in line for 40 minutes while they have over 20 tables empty but refuse to seat us.

Then we can go have dinner at their buffet that I wouldn't feed to my dog. I won't be eating - just watching the GM have his meal.

For the record, I agree with supporting the host hotel and I've bolded the parts of Mr. Griffin's post that I think are especially important. Circus Circus rates were based on double occupancy and I know most people end up 3 & 4 to a room, especially in these tough economic times.

The whole reason for this thread was to tell people about the dire straits that the Riviera is currently in. As Mr. Griffin has pointed out, the Riviera has been extremely supportive and tolerant of the pool world for a long time. They've allowed us the luxury of affordable lodging during a lengthy stay in times past when all of us had more money in our pockets. Now they need us and if it is at all possible, I would hope that players will stay at the Riviera and help support them when they need it. Should the Riviera close it's doors, going to the BCA in May will be considerably more expensive for the players when it comes to lodging.

Believe me, I've experienced it all first hand as have many on here. That being said, there are other options for dining (peppermill is walking distance next door). I've been told that the new deli they were building during the BCA last yr is pretty good also. Personally the worst I've witnessed staff wise was the older bartenders at the splash bar. There is no more splash bar so you won't have to worry about that aspect of it anyway.

Ultimately, there are flaws on the service side of things but they're still more willing to host the BCA at a much reasonable price than most anyone else would do. I remember in yrs past people complained about the rooms being dumpy. I've never had a problem and have certainly stayed in worse during my life time but the renovated rooms are very nice.

As with anything, the Riviera has it's good and bad points. One of the best points being that the BCA has always been an affordable venue for pro players (broke people) and working stiffs (broke people).

If I stay at an affordable hotel, I have more money in my pocket for entertainment purposes. If the BCA had to move to a more expensive hotel, I wouldn't have the luxury of entertainment outside of the BCA event itself. Take the good with the bad. The good outweighs the bad, IMO.
