There must be money in streaming!

I don't believe there is any real money in streaming pool right now although I am surprised some are getting by doing it but doubtful it is making them rich. You have to consider all the hours put into it that people do not realize behind the scenes before the stream even happens and when you do the math it does not equate to a good deal of money. Daniel Busch is one of the hungriest streamers out there and I remember being much the same way in the beginning, I do hope it pays off for him.
TAR events are happening fairly regularly so it has to be making something and it should since they have top players and its the original, I can still recall the first stream and how far it has come along since then. I think many of us forum members have watched TAR progress and the history of it all so its almost like a cult following.
Without this forum none of the streamers would make anything substantial I feel. Facebook is also helping to spread the word to non forum members which is great. I do see growth and more streamers doing PPV so they are trying that is for sure. Perhaps eventually it will be lucrative for those streaming and all those hours and money invested will pay off.

Streaming is great, because it does what the mainstream media won't do....invest in pool. But, there is something missing. Listen to tonight's episode of ABR.

Thanks for all your hard work Lenny, I hope you are rewarded financially sometime in the near future for all the effort and sacrifices you have made.
I also know that if you never get anything out of it but the enjoyment , you will be ok with that too.

I agree and when I hear people gripe about quality of a free stream or paying around $30 for a high quality one for a few days of pool action it is ridiculous. People pay $50 or more for mma and boxing PPVs that sometimes are terrible but for half the price you get days of pool action. :smile:

Wow, almost 4 years ago that match was. I think that might have been the longest stream with the same guy at the helm (me), a whopping 30 hours of one pocket!
That has to be one of the greatest comebacks in 1-pocket of all time. Scott must have puked when he kicked and made the ball.

EDIT: I agree with Ken below about the commentary, in some cases I won't purchase the match
until I know who's commentating, because some I just can't listen to.

One thing I have noticed is the importance of great commentary and with it they produce a really is a great product.
Some of the streamers have people talking while the match is going on and call it commentary.
Billy Incardona is really great, and JoeyA is doing better each time out. JR is also excellent.
It is such a big deal, I want to know who is doing the commentary just as much as who is playing in the match.

I honestly have no clue how so many people stay alive in streaming. I know I look at what some people are doing and think "There is no way".

As to the PPV craze lately one thing tilts me so bad I start cussing out loud. That is people who screw them up totally. I understand shit happens. No one understands it better than me. But when you see people doing things that are 100% guaranteed to blow up in their face and they do it anyway it sends me over the edge.
Some will say "Oh you are just worried about the competition" That is false. What I am worried about is that some new viewer decides to spring for his first PPV and its a disaster. How many times do you think a guy is going try after having a bad experience? If everyone doing PPV's were doing them like Accu-Stats it would be great for the industry. We need people who spend money on streams. If someone has a good experience with one company they are more likely to try another companies if they put on something interesting.
It is damn hard to get a new viewer. Its even harder when they have to wade through disasters to find the decent providers.

I think that in order to turn a profit right now in streaming pool, the funding from pool inudstry members via advertisements is important, compared to those spending monies on PPV. I am not sure what the balance there is, though. Some events would not happen if it were not for the pool industry members putting up the dough beforehand.
Pool print media, for example, gets the bulk of their funding from advertising, more so than subscriptions. With long-existing, well-known, brand-name newspapers going belly up, the sign of the times is that print media won't be able to sustain itself versus the online media.
In this regard, online media is on the rise. I just watched an interview of Bill Gates last night who predicts that soon the trend will be a person sitting in front of multiple monitors, one for each interest, i.e., work, recreation, news, TV, et cetera.
When I grew up in the '60s, there were only four TV channels. A TV show that received 50 million views was considered successful. Today, since there are hundreds and hundreds of TV channels,a TV show that received 14 million views is considered successful. The money still comes from advertisements, but it's also coming from subscriptions of prime channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax.
Wouldn't it be interesting to have a bundling option for pool in the future? Pay a subscription and have access to this, that, and the other. :thumbup:
BTW, I have become a fan of ths recent ABR radio shows. The interviews are informative as to what's happening in pool right now, and I like the ability to listen to them when it is convenient for me, as opposed to live.
Streaming pool has come a long way. I remember when Accu-Stats stumbled at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship with connectivity problems. This forum was on fire with anger. How dare Accu-Stats take their money and they can't connect. We've come a long way, Baby, with Accu-Stats still leading the way.

I hope they make a killing but my guess is they are barely paying the bills. All the online streams actually got me back interested in pool this past year after a 15 year layoff. I love the streams and the youtube channels. Since starting up again I try to support a lot of the streams. I try to pay or donate whenever I watch even if it is not a PPV. I've bought the TAR matches before and have other plans come up and not get to watch. It doesn't matter to me as I feel that if Justin and TAR put it together, I want to do my part send them $40 or whatever the cost. To me, it is my part for trying to promote pool. If Justin makes anything off of it, good for him.
I paid and sat through some of the problems with inside pool Efren/Earl the other night. I had access most of the time but did have to refresh more times that I one would expect. It was frustrating but I hope they learned and will be better prepared next time. I know I'll be watching.

I'm really impressed with the dedication of the streamers, both free and PPV. I've probably bought 20 PPV's in the last two years, mostly TAR
I do have one request: pretty please, with sugar on top, quit changing the camera angle every 3 seconds. A single camera high above the end of the table probably works best for 95% of shots. As a player I enjoy looking at the position and planning out the pattern. This is impossible with the angle changing constantly. Worst is when the operator literally changes it while the CB is still rapidly moving around the table. The camera operator knows when they are about to change angles, but to us views it's a jarring experience as we have to quickly readjust our brains to the new angle.
