Thinking of acquiring a 60" cue and have questions.

Big Bob Ogburn turned me onto the longer cue yrs ago. Im a fan of 29" butt and 30" shafts. At 6'5" I find the extra inch very valuable. I had a few 60" cues {30"/30"} over the yrs but the 59" recipe is right for me. Good luck in your search.
 
Shooting style

The length of the cue that fits best is not only a factor of your height but also your shooting style and your stance at the table, a snooker type of stance vs a 9 ball type of stance. I am 5"10 and use a 61" cue, I have a longer than average bridge length, I like a longer stroke and I also like to stretch out my bridge arm. A taller player with a short bridge length, a shorter stroke and not stretching his bridge arm out to full length could get by with a shorter cue, but I think a taller player could shoot better if he used a longer cue, it would enable him to have a longer and free'r, less constricted shooting style. The longer cue give the shooter a longer aim line, should be more accurate. Some claim the longer cues are too flexible but the extra length need not be in the tip of the cue but could be in the joint end of the shaft or in the butt itself and the taper of the shaft need not be any different than the taper on a shorter cue. I could be wrong but I think a lot of Philippine players use 60" cues and their average height is less than 6'. A longer cue may fit better than a 58" but if you try one give it a chance. give yourself time to become accustomed to it.
 
I have a friend that's 6'5" and currently uses a 61" cue. He said he'd actually like to go with a 63" stick (or longer) if he could find one at a reasonable price. Anyone know who might make something to fill this bill?

Schmelke makes custom cue butts. I have a 32" butt paired with a 30" Predator 314-2 shaft. Works for me at 6'3" with long arms and a low stance. I would not have it any shorter. I always had my fingers hanging off the end of m cue butt on longer shots with a normal-length cue.
 
I play with a 62" John Bender Cue that is evenly divided between 31" butt and 31" shaft. Its balanced for the extra length which is important.

I went thru every thing from a 57" to a 62" in small increments until I found the right combination.

My Break cue is 60" and makes a huge difference as well..

They are about as hard to sell as a 58 inch cue to someone who wants a 60 inch cue. More people want a 58 inch cue so what you say makes sense but to someone who is looking for a 60 inch cue they might be even easier to sell because they are fewer of them.
 
I have a 60 incher that I made earlier this summer. It has ebony points and ebony buttsleeve with curly nose. It also has a modified 3/8x10 pin and natural collars. If you want it, I will sell it to you. It has an ivory ferrule too.

I like to play with a normal 58" cue, but I think taller people more than 6' should play with longer cues. It is only natural.

i have played from time to time over the years with a 60" cue, i had a SW i played with for almost 3 years that was 60", i have over time found i do play a bit better with a 58" cue. I was given a gift of a 60" cue last month and I have played with it a a few times and it feels great, i think after a while it dosent matter how long the cue is, as long as its not to short. i cant play with 57" cue.
 
I am 6' tall and have tried out various lengths to find what works best for me. Settled on 59" even split.
 
Almost all of my cues and certaintly all that I play regularly with including my break and jump break cues are 60 inches long with a 30/30 split. A good cuemaker can make the longer shaft with out making the shaft whippy as some have said, whippiness in my opinion is a function more of taper than length especially when we are talking about 1 inch extra on the shaft.

I have 60 inch cues from Jim Buss, Ray Schuler, Greg Pierce (from Missoula, MT), Richard Black, Rick Howard and have 2 more on order one from Jeff Prather and one from Mark Bear.

I agree with those that say it makes sense if you're taller to play with a longer cue. Look at golf, lots of people dont' play with standard length clubs.
 
I too play with 60" cues. Mine are 30/30" as well. I'm 6'3".

One that I grab most often is a Bob Frey ebony SP.

Bob makes an excellent SP.
 
I played with a 60" Viking with an OB-1 extended shaft for a for a few years and liked it for the BB. Now I play with a R-360 Cuetec that has an 8" extention that can be be screwed in to the butt. I'm only 5' 6" and hate, hate the mechanical bridge. I can play with any any cue thats 57"-61" as long as its balanced right. I have short arms. That was the reason I gave up boxing when I had to step up in weight. A short reach in boxing=your a punching bag. Johnnyt
 
I'm 6' 7"...

...and currently shoot with a 29" Dominiak butt and a 30" 314 shaft.

For my height, the extra inch is comfortable.

If I were to go longer though, it would be in the butt end. Less whip in the shaft.
 
Since I made the OP almost a year ago, I have since made two purchases. First, I got Dave Jacoby to build me a 31" butt. Then I bought a 30" OB Classic shaft. Now, by mixing and matching, I have four choices of cue lengths to choose from (including using my standard length butts and shafts). I can go 58" to 61" and all points in between. My favorite seems to be the 31" butt and a 29" shaft for a total length of 60". Next, I like the 29" butt with the 30" shaft for a total of 59". The 31" butt and 30" shaft just makes for too long of a cue as far as my preferences go. I have noticed one thing though, my bridge length expanded out about an inch or so since going to the longer cue.

I saw some 60" Schulers about a year or so ago on a web site that was selling his old stock that he had when he died.
 
I only play with 60" Cues and Alex Brick made each one to perfection.

And at very reasonable prices, I might ad.
 
I too now play with a 60" cue and find it a lot better for my game overall I had the exact same problem as you with curling my little finger around the bumper. I bought a 60" from Joss Cues made to my specs after meeting Dan at the Atlanta Billiard Show. Wait was not too long and the cue is exactly to the specs I gave him, which were pretty simple really. I tried out some of his cues there and they all felt great, so I felt at the price he quoted I couldn't go wrong.

I wanted a solid playing 60" cue, with no wrap, two different types of Cocobolo in the butt, simple black rings, no points etc, I didn't want the butt and extra 2" (I don't like they way they feel) and therefore had them split the extra 2" between shaft and butt and 2 shafts at 12.75. Other than that just told him to have fun making it.

Well they really hit the mark, it matches my exact specs, the two types of cocobolo are completely different, the balance is fantastic just what I wanted. The cue is simple in many ways but it is absolutley beautiful and stands out from anything else I have owned or anyone else owns, it's a true one off. All the way through the process Dan and Team were fantastic every question was answered quickly and precisely, he met the timescales set and the specs exactly. I couldn't ask for more.

I am now a convert to Joss Cues and do not hesitate to reccomend them to anyone.
 
You might want to give Barry Cameron a call. He made my 60" cue. It's a nice plain jane with figured birdseye maple forearm and butt sleeve with a cocbolo wrap. 2 shafts and custom joint protectors. The total price was 485.00 two years ago. I'm sure his prices haven't strayed too far from that.
