good point, i seen people use the nit word to piss someone off to get them to take a bad game, i never fell for that one. i never played that card either. I dont like that word and dont use it often, unless its just blatant , i think there are better words to chose from, i'd rather think and say something a bit more intelligent.
and some people aint worth f'ning with or thinking about, its fun to toy with them for a few minutes then move on.
however there are times i get my nose open and i just cant help myself, i want to bust them.
B or C depending on the situation. If I'm in a real bad game but got lucky and made it to the hill, I'm gonna try to win the set then play another. If I like the game, I'll ask to double the bet and start over.

See, something good did come out of this ordeal.
1st...I was not trying to make you look bad, I used no name, and the title and body is about why I don't like to play for money.
2nd...we started much earlier than u state.
3rd....I was struggling, and playing at 30%...
4th...we said play race to 5 for 50-that's 1 set!
5th...if you're dumping at 1am hoping for more action...not smart IMO.
6th...I already said I'm not a gambler in pool, that means I don't know all the gambling bs. Don't care either-
I wasn't really enjoying the set-nothing against you, wasn't playing at my speed, ...
If you think the action sucks in SC, why don't you play J-bird some-he was there that night-he'd put u into a tailspin???
Anyway-great playing-hope we play soon-it was a gentleman s game except the end. You have a good pool demeanor. I'd be happy to play again. I'm just not a big fan of gambling for the reasons in this thread...most are admittedly my fault due to having no experience gambling. Don't really care, not really interested in gambling...again, work provides me a great living-I play pool for fun.

Tom Ferry....I haven't heard that name in awhile, he was one of my all time favorites that used to play at Cue and Cushion in St. Louis.
I got my "whiskers wet" gambling in St. Louis, at Afton Billiards, Grand and Gravois, Cue and Cushion and the Forestell Truck Stop (what a spot that was :thumbup
And playing St. Louie Louie was a trip when I was 16, he was one of my all time favorite gamblers.
We were all "old school" playing "ahead sets" and muscling up for days planning to break the place and everyone in it. I wish those days weren't gone, but now it's so much different in mentality, the "time limits" are pretty lame compared to playing until it was decided.
Tom and I played in the finals of the MO. State Championships when I was still in High School. I finished second and Tom played flawlessly with that pinky ring fluttering, and that stylish hat he used to wear. I really liked those days of style and flash, now I see too much of the long tee shirts and gym shorts. I respect everyone's freedom to dress as they please, and I also like the dress codes like are coming up in the 10 Ball Championships in Tunica .... I don't think 'The Hustler' would have been half the movie is Jackie and Paul hadn't been dressed in style. Just my opinion - 'The Game is the Teacher'

I got the pleasure of meeting Tom a few years ago before he passed and we got to know each other pretty well. This was during a time when me and SAJ were in St louis for the entire winter practically.
He actually used to post on AZ all the time CJ. If you wanna look up some of his stuff his name was "Oldhasbeen". He was very respected and is missed here.
Tom knew he was dying and told very few people...he didn't want people to feel sorry for him and he wanted them all to have a big party!
Well I met Tom one time and that son of a ***** told me he was dying after I spent a few hours with him. And let me tell, you... tears are welling again... and I don't cry much over anything.

He was certainly a Class Act...and an inspiration to me when I was 17 on how to conduct myself as a professional. For me there's always been a challenge to not only play well, but to look the part in public in dress and mannerisms. This is no easy task, and Tom F. was one who, for the most part, pulled it off with grace and poise.
I've never seen Tom act in any way other than a professional character who represented pool in a stellar manner. RIP Tom, I'm glad I had the opportunity to grow up in your era and around your city of choice. 'The Game was our common Teacher'

Was always nice seeing good players like Liscotti, Rempe, Sigel, Varner....dressed up 24/7 pretty much. Makes everyone around ya happier, and it definitely can intimidate some players for a free game.
Island, are you talking about players actually wearing nice clothes and making themselves look presentable while playing.
Last weekend, our hall hosted the provincial snooker championships. It was nice to see all the players dressed up, even to the point of black slacks and vests.
A large difference between that and shorts and sandals on many of the live streams.

This would have been a non-issue if you simply stated when he asked to play the set for $50 "sure, but I can only play one set maximum, gotta work tomorrow" BEFORE you started that first set. That makes him aware that he is playing to win or lose $50 in the only set that is going to be played and makes him aware of that fact the same as you were.
Generally if you know you are going to play only one set it is common courtesy to inform the person you are playing of that fact and it tends to lead to situations like you went through to cease to happen.
PS: When you tell a person "well I am not even shooting good and you still could not beat me" you are fanning the flames, that is actually one of the best ways to KEEP people wanting to play you, telling them they cannot win and should simply quit, it makes people want to play you all the more. So that was certainly not going to ease the disagreement, it was going to simply escalate it and make the guy want to play even more.

If I had known that the match would run til 1am, for sure, I figured that we'd mutually extend it anyway if we both wanted to extend...apparently this gamblers code thing, I will need to specify 1 set only before each set, to give myself freedom to walk out when I don't want to play pool anymore:grin-square:
Look man you stated yourself you didn't get to the pool hall until 11pm. Second, you practiced breaking with you break tool for at least a half hour. Third, you played at least 4 games of practice before I even came over an asked if you wanted to play. Then when you did say you would play, you said you wante to practice 2 more games before we started. Which actually turned into 4 more games. That has to take at least an hour. Probably longer. So having said all that, if you got to the pool hall at 11 pm(which seems normal for people that have to work at 8 am.) and do all that before you agreed to play then how could we possibly start before 12:15 possibly even 12:30. The set was over at 1. As you stated yourself. I don't know why you still want to argue. You WON. You got my $50, all hail the god of pool. He played at 30% and still beat me down. And I won't be able to eat tomorrow.
Look man I tried to be nice about all this and even that night you started crap with me by boasting about how much money you make. Yet you still want get on here and complain about winning. If you don't want to gamble then don't gamble. People like you make gambling less fun anyway. I mean you learn a couple of pool terms and buy expensive cues and that makes you some type of expert that knows when they only play 30% of there game. Whatever man. Enjoy the $50, could have won 4k but you won't get another shot at that.
As far as J Bird goes we tried to donate some money to him that night and he went home. No chance I can beat JBird but You my friend are no JBird. And you had the nerve to call my friends and I assholes because you acted like a complete douche.

Well done, you are learning. That was all I was looking for from you. By a few of your statements I could tell you were somewhat unfamiliar with the gambling side to pool. We all make mistakes. To acknowledge those mistakes and learn from them is what helps us to grow.
I know you know that. You simply needed to apply that thinking to a money game in the pool room.
