Tremors along east coast

My shop is located 20 minutes from Mineral, Virginia where the epicenter was located.
Shook up the place pretty good. All is well though.

Felt it here in Central New Jersey for about 35 to 40 seconds of side to side rocking motion.

Glad to hear all is well by you...Craziness!

Thanks !!!

My second worry, first was my family, was the North Anna Nuclear Power Station located a few miles north of the epicenter, but I heard that all is ok there as both Turbines tripped and were automatically shut down safely.

That would have definitely been a bit of a problem...Glad to hear the family is well and that the station's safety equipment is working well. Phew!

McCready must be coming out of retirement....... SWEET!

LOL :yeah:

Felt it here in Stafford VA!!! Was very strong and lasted a great deal. Probably around 45 seconds or so. Funny thing.... The lady and I were steam cleaning the carpets to our new house and i thought it was her. I asked her.. "Are you doing that???" She looked at me with bug eyes and then it slowly got strong and I knew (was in 3 quakes in SF... Strongest one was 5.0 for 10 seconds) what it was. I grab the baby from his crib and grabbed her and we stood in the doorway to wait it out.

I would've taking us outside but my staircase is steep and the floor was moving a lot so I didnt want to chance taking the baby down the steps. It stopped about 5 or 6 seconds after we where secure in the doorway so all is well.

Funny seeing the looks on peoples faces around here!!! They're beside themselves...

I'm in Northern Virginia near DC. It's been reported as a 5.8 - 5.9 earthquake.
It shook things up here a bit but everything seems ok.

That is a faily good size one, even by our standards here in California.

Welcome to California!
So here's the deal, I'm gonna tell you an Earthquake "secret."

It is a FALLACY to think the best thing to do is to stand in a doorway or go to the smallest room in the house (closet or bathroom). The absolute best thing to do is to lay down NEXT TO a large piece of furniture, like a bed or a couch. Under a pool table probably ain't too bad either. In a severe quake there is a small triangle of safety where you will be protected next to a couch or a bed. This way you are protected if the walls or roof cave in. Door jambs can fail and they collapse in a crooked/zig zag pattern (see San Francisco 1989). That was deadly for people standing there. Safety experts who are familiar with quakes will tell you the same thing.

One other thing, if you happen to be in a car that is on or under an overpass or tunnel, the best place to be is outside your car, laying on the ground next to it. The car will protect you from falling debris. Same goes for being in a downtown area with tall buildings. Lay down next to the biggest vehicle you can find. I know, I know, it ain't gonna ever happen........until it does! I have experienced two severe earthquakes out here and three or four less severe ones (like the one that just happened). Knowing what to do can save your life and that of your family!

Once again, this small area is called "The triangle of safety." Ask an expert who is familiar with earthquakes if you don't believe me.

most people i meet from the east coast don't talk about earthquakes much and always act like people in cali are crazy for living here because of them. do they happen there a lot? where's the fault line?

Well, I'm in D.C., and I remember the earthquake we had last year, which woke me up at 4 a.m.

If you can believe it, I was at the dentist's office when it happened. Things were falling off the walls. The dental assistant was sitting in a chair with wheels, and the chair rolled across the room -- with her in it.

My dog was with Keith when it happened, and he started to wimper. He's 13-1/2 years old, and we're always worried that he's in pain. He was fine after the earthquake. He knew it was coming before Keith did.

All is well in D.C., but I sure do hope there ain't no after-shakes.

My wife was doing a conference call from her at-home office in FL. when two of the women from NC. said the building was shaking and hung up. Later one of them e-maled my wife saying one woman in a chair next to her was rolled clear across the office. Johnnyt

None of our cell phones work. My daughter's, Keith's, my friends' cell phones. Thank goodness for my old-fashioned land-line telephone. :D

At work in Leonardtown MD today during the shake.....

Now I just need to see a tornado up close and my life will be complete.

:D

The wife and I were having lunch at The Thai Rice in Frederick, MD when the quake hit. My wife wanted to know what was going on...I told her an earthquake, but she didn't believe me, at first.

Bless her heart, the waitress was a young girl with poor English. She was terrified. I asked if she was Thai, but she said she was from Nepal. She could not be made to understand how the ground could actually move like that...she was terrified, shaking and crying, and she did not speak English or Thai well enough for us or the Thai restaurant owner to explain things to her.

As JAM said, all the cell phones went dead. I have Verizon and the restaurant was in the same shopping area as the Verizon store...right next door...no cell phone service to find out what the heck was happening and who it was affecting...

...can you hear me now?...Nope!!

Joe
