Tad , pre 1985 Joss West , Tim Scruggs , Gus Szamboti and Bill Schick !!!
For example in Florida "Searing" is hugely popular and after hitting with two of them I find them only average, they pale in comparison to Scruggs and my playing cue my BlackBoar. If you gave me a Searing i'd sell it and look for a Thomas Wayne cue from Alaska (and by the way I've never been to Alaska).
There is something to be said about what part of the country you live in ... your opinion is usually biased towards that end. If you live somewhere between NYC and Richmond VA chances are your opinion will lean toward the Maryland phenomenon of Excellent cuemaking that is going on there. Phillipi , BlackBoar, Frey, Joss(*) , Lambros, Scruggs are hard to deny. It is odd that such a small state is home to 20 % of the top 25 custom cuemakers on the planet.
When I moved a thousand miles away I realized that familiarity with cues is incredibly regional in addition to being a matter of opinion. For example in Florida "Searing" is hugely popular and after hitting with two of them I find them only average, they pale in comparison to Scruggs and my playing cue my BlackBoar. If i run into one more moron who has been playing less than 5 years and wants to sing the praises of a poolplayer who in his retiring from playing stages of his life and now makes cues i may slit my wrists.
two cents: broaden your horizons when thinking about buying a custom cue and worst case scenario play with it a few months if you don't like it sell it and on to the next one. And, even better hold onto it and maybe the cuemaker dies and you make alot off of holding onto it.
