Do you think this wa the right shot? (UK Open, Moritz Neuhausen)

I'd probably have tried something like this. Would have to be there to see the exact positions + know the table conditions etc, but seems like it should work. Even if the cue ball leaks out, leaving the purple ball against the end rail ensures no easy shot for the opponent.

If it feels like a double hit is gonna happen with the cb+purple, then that complicates things, might be avoidable with side though. Again, would have to be there on the table to feel out whether a double hit would happen or not. From the image, to me it looks like you can avoid it, if you hit it thin enough like in my drawing.

My main issue with what Moritz did is that even if it gives a great safety some of the time, the % of sell-out is way too high. Not worth the risk at all. And this all leads me to wonder what he sees that I don't, because there's no way he would play that shot if there wasn't something that I don't see. Only other explanation I can think of is frustration/laziness, which I highly doubt for such a situation.

I also would have shot the route pictured here.

However, I do see that he thought with a perfect hit and the speed he had, he could have trapped it against the rail and the other object ball.

Double however... even if he executed the shot as he planned, I think he was going to get a return safety that he wasn't going to love.

UK Open 2026, London, May 26-31

Yes, but 11-10 to the higher rated player is still the most likely result. It's that close!
Weird subtlety: an 11-10 handicap may be close to fair, but that doesn’t mean 11-10 is the most likely score in a race to 11. Because of the stopping rule, the winner must win the last rack. So 11-10 requires first getting to 10-10, while 11–9 only requires getting to 10-9. Hill-hill has more paths, but it also requires one extra rack from the eventual loser; when that player is below 50% per rack, 11-9 edges it out.

****
Here is another way a small skill difference like 13 points may be more meaningful than first appears. Winning a tournament requires winning many matches.

So imagine two 128-player single-elimination tournaments
The first has Gorst (850) and 127 others all rated 800.
The second has Filler (863) and 127 others all rated 800.

Gorst is 78.9% to win each match and 19% to win the tournament [that match percentage gets raised to the 7th power]
Filler is 84.3% to win each match and 30% to win the tournament-
This is a more meaningful difference than you might guess from just looking at the match numbers.

If the 800s all go for $100 in each of the winner-take-all calcuttas, Gorst should go for about $3,000 and Filler should go for $5,500

I find Predator PBS events to be considerably better product for fans than WNT events

Other than the ridiculous shootout they are good events. Glad they are bringing it back here to JAX in December, although bummed they moved the Women's World Championship.

Couldn't agree more.

There is room for all kinds of events and formats. I watch the Predator events, so ultimately I "vote" with my eyeballs.

With that said...

I would prefer that if two players are tied at 3-3 in the third and deciding set, they re-lag for the break and play one game as a sudden death playoff (instead of the spot shots which I find lacking and probably take longer than one rack would).

Pool is not poor because people won't pay to watch it. Pool is poor because it's only interesting to people who play the game. (Actually, that's not even true. It's really only interesting to a small percentage of people who play the game. Most players don't watch it either.)
You might be right, but more people used to watch pool in the US and viewership in some places overseas seems to be pretty good. In any case, I am happy to subscribe to WNT TV and Billiards Digest. Doesn't cost me much to support the game.

This is, of course, part of the reason pool is so poor. If dedicated fans won't pay for anything, who will? I am happy to pay a annual WNT TV subscription so long as it works. I'd be happy to pay a Predator one, too.

I'll be the first to admit I do not know a ton about the details of how the fees are split, but I see more than a few YouTube channels that have a "Membership" only videos along with their free content. Seems like a good way for MR to utilize the outstanding interface and still have a "subscription" if they feel they need that.
I don't know the details either, but I work under the assumption that if something was easy, it would have been done by now. Not true in government and not always true in the private sector, but for-profit companies tend to find a way.

Seems to me MR concluded this wasn't a viable option.

I've never bothered with the WNT.tv deal. Partly because of the reviews I've read on the hassle to stream on TV, and partly because I feel like they got a bit greedy and power drunk when they thought they had the pool world by the balls.
Lack of a dedicated app is a problem.

Drunk on power? What power! Nobody in pool really has power in the true sense of the word.
I remember once when Emily was complaining about pirated streams, she said they can't get any sponsors if they can't show they have subscribers. That didn't really make sense to me. I would think if you went to Mercedes or Rolex and said we have 3 million YT views you'd get a lot further than saying we have 50,000 subscribers.
Whatever page views Predator and MR generate on Youtube, it does not seem to have translated into advertisers or ad money.
At this point with all of the Heyball, Ultimate Pool, Predator and WPBA events that are free, the thought of paying to watch Filler run another paint-by-numbers 9b rack is pretty out of the question.
This is, of course, part of the reason pool is so poor. If dedicated fans won't pay for anything, who will? I am happy to pay a annual WNT TV subscription so long as it works. I'd be happy to pay a Predator one, too.
