diciplinary action on Rodney Morris during UPA`s World Summit pool

The following apology was sent to us by Rodney today....

I would like to extend my most sincerest apology to the UPA, ACS, staff at the World Summit of Pool, my friends and family, my sponsor Kamuitips.com, fans, and my fellow pool players.

This past Friday I was playing a match and I let my emotions get the better of me and I walked out in the middle of the match. I disrespected myself and this wonderful game. There's no excuse for the behavior that I exhibited and I am 100% in the wrong for walking out. I realize that I'm only human and make mistakes, but there still has to be a penalty. My being forfeited in my next match is fair to me, as I feel that's what should happen when you act the way I did. Once again I would like to say I'm sorry to everyone that was affected by my actions this past weekend.

Thanks for posting this Mike. Thanks vagabond for your updates too.

WOW,9 spectators........packed house:eek:....9X$15 entry fee - Jcins entry fee=$120.Oh,and I forgot...added money......gee,1st place at this UPA event must be around.......$318........minus hotels,expenses,food,gas,flights.............-$2,012.
Ouch,to be a pro player these days.
Kevin"I had a dream"Trudeau isnt looking as bad a guy now is he?

Before getting too wistful you need to remind yourself that in the context of comparing Trudeau's events with what tournaments are now available to play in and why that situation exists, it doesn't really matter how good or bad a guy Trudeau was.

The decision not to hold any more IPT tournaments wasn't made by the players, it was made by Trudeau. He didn't cancel (sorry, "postpone", they still aren't officially cancelled according to IPT lol) because of players complaining about the events or complaining about the payments, he cancelled because the venture was unsuccesful and because he saw no prospect of recovering his outlay, let alone make a profit. Players complaints arose only AFTER it was clear that scheduled events would not happen.

In Vegas when Rodney was playing Chris Bartram 15 ahead, Chris was 12 up and made a simple combo...Rodney jumped up and declared a foul saying Chris did not call the combo....Chris did point to the combo and it was so easy it was obivious....But Rodney took ball in hand and starting shooting...Rodney got it down I think to Chris just 3 ahead when they quit for the night.
The next day Chris finished Morris off in about 2 hours and won the money.....
Rodney is acting strange lately when he gets behind in matches......???????

Never heard that story before NINEBALLART. My question, or rather comment, is that right when Rodney grabbed the cueball, the railbirds and backers should have protested LOUDLY. No ball in hand until the issue is resolved. This story surpises me more so than even the original post in this thread.

A minute later rodney entered the arena and and stood in mike`s face.I could not tell whether their cloths were touching or not.but Rodney appeared to have made an attempt to use his size to intimidate mike.

That's another new one as well. I can't recall ever having seen or heard an elite, world class player getting up close like that in a dispute. They usually jaw at each other for a moment or so and then get back to the rack.

One of the all time greatest shark moves happened between two of my all time favorite players...Fong Pang Chao was sitting in his chair during the 2000 WPC directly in Oliver Ortmann's sight. At one point in the match, during Oliver's final stroke delivery, Chao turned his head sharply to look somewhere off in the distance. Oh, and Chao's cell phone went off another time Oliver was down on a critical shot.....And after the match, Ortmann walked over and they very professionally shook hands. I don't think they exchanged Christmas cards or cookies that year, but Ortmann showed great sportsmanship afterwards.

Never a good idea to get physical. There are so many deadly guys out there who don't look or act deadly, but they really and truely are. Plus, the ones who couldn't lick their lips in a fight either carry a gun or an attorney's card!

Wish JohnnyT would chime in here with his sagacious words of wisdom for events such as these....

While I was not there for the actual combo I was there to see alot of the set including the close of the set. After the set was over Rodney's backer wanted to do the exact same spot and bet again and Chris said no. Alot of people found that odd including Dennis Hatch until Dennis asked Chris why he would not play another set (anyone who watched the set knows with that spot with Chris and Rodney both shooting like they were Chris was looking like a STRONG favorite), that is when Chris said he was not going to play because of crap like that call, he set up the combo, showed Dennis the shot that Rodney called a foul on, and Dennis looked like he thought it was as much bullshit as Chris and most of the people in attendence did and thus the case was closed, no chance to get back your money for you Rodney.

The combo was obvious as hell, it was as unsportsmanlike in the extreme and pretty much everyone there could understand Chris not wanting to bother with another set with Rodney. He showed he would rather take on Dennis Orcullo then play another against a guy with as little class as Rodney showed.

The reason it might not have been a huge fuss is that Chris at that time was killing Rodney and probably did not want to get into a huge arguement that might change the flow of the match at that point.

Ego's

When ego's get the better of athletes this is what usually happens (and it happens all the time...). He did the right thing by apologizing.

part of your story is right.
they wanted to change the spot.
i would have but you know why i did not.

I didn't really want to get too involved in this but if you must know, Chris's friends who were watching did protest what Rodney did but Rodney had a bigger and louder crowd sitting with him and bigger numbers on Rodney's side won out...Rodney's friends and backers made the most noise....So Chris backed off because he was way ahead and just wanted to get it over with....Rodney was WRONG......
I was just there watching....Not betting on or rooting for anyone....I'm just telling what I saw....

guys-aside from 2 recent incedents rodney has always shown a tremendous amount of class during events, gambling matches and interviews-hes already apolgized for this
lets write it off for hopes that hes not going to turn into a crazy old dude

lalouie you sir are a classless act-im positive youre a coward in life and
with any luck someone will slap you hard enough to make your face wrinkle

if not drop me line when youre passin through nj-ill even do it for ya on the highway

Mike dechaine won the tournament of world summit of pool beating thorston homenn. After his win I had some beer with him at le Bistro and after that he went to Fat Boy`s estate/mansion/palace.Let us bring closure to the issue.Mike Howerton posted Rodney`s apology letter. That should be the end of the issue.good night.

I thought it was interesting he apologized only for walking out, rather than getting up in Mike's face and being intimidating. If that's what happened, that's the big issue that would cause disqualification. That's the kind of thing that starts fistfights. So that's what he should be apologizing for.

For anyone interested

The UPA rules stiplulate that forfeiting during a match will result in forfeiting for the rest of the event. I don't remember all of the rules or stipulations as it's been a few years since I've played but that much I'm sure is true.

You have got to be kidding. Someone starts a thread about what happened at the world summit of pool involving Rodney Morris & you come on here bring up & blaming it on something that happened umteen years ago in his past. You prim & proper folks must have to work real hard to be as perfect as you are. I would suggest you put your nose down before you drown when it rains.

Well said.

During the finals of the winners Bracket Rodney Morris got into an argument with his opponent Mike Dechaine.I ,as a spectator could not figure out what the problem was.Other spectators also did not know what was going on.There were only 9 spectators. One time Rodney left the arena and sat in the spectator seats and was talking to mike from the spectator seats. A minute later rodney entered the arena and and stood in mike`s face.I could not tell whether their cloths were touching or not.but Rodney appeared to have made an attempt to use his size to intimidate mike. That is the time frank Alvarez moved into the arena and stood by Rodney and talked to them.play resumed. I walked out for a beer and after socialization with few friends for few minutes I returned to know that Rodney walked out of the match. The score was 4-2 or some thing like that mike dechaine`s favor. Then UPA president frank Alvarez after consulting his team decided to not to allow Rodney to play his next match which will be with the winner of the match between Thorston and stevie Moore for third place.Later I talked to frank to find out what happened.frank explained to me in a very vague manner and I gathered that the dispute between the two players was over illegally moved balls.
Today is the finals at 1pm.:o

This is why it should be "Foul on all balls". Then there is no question about whether it is a foul of not. Only in the USA do we play "Cue ball fouls only".

maybe he started taking drugs. that might explain his behavior

Good post. I was thinking the same thing. If he did get in Mike's face, that should be the REAL issue here!

Totally agree with you there, Jay. As much as I love the way the game is played here that is the one thing I miss from back home in England. "Foul on all balls" makes things much clearer. Plus it tends to make players a little more aware of what they're doing while at the table.
