So You Want To Be A Top Pro...Why?

I'm a competitor, period. I don't care if it's flying kites, I want to be good at it. I guess I've invested so much time into pool, and it has given me so many highs and lows (perfect sign for a type "A" personality, I'm also in commission sales) I enjoy the highs. I don't have the dedication or time, or even the gift to be a top level player. I do, however, have a desire and gift enough to reach a certain level. The key is to know that "level." And,.....be truthful about it to yourself. If your not truthful to yourself, you go broke. I've had my share of overrating myself. It's rare, but we've all done it. To me, the action is addictive. The comradery, the ability to throw out some balls in any town across America and get noticed as a possible threat. Good feeling. I'd have to say it's a high. Doesn't do much for your action, but still a good feeling to walk into a poolroom two hours from home and be recognized by someone you have absolutely no idea who they are. I know my place in the pool world.

And I enjoy it. And those that really know me, know this. If I've been into your poolroom, you've liked me or more than not hated me or wanted a shot at me (this is an edge for action for you morons that think I'm just making enemies for no reason), but you'll know I've been in the building.

Awesome post.

i think the title could say want to be a pro why.not a top pro.

the top pros like archer, mika, busty, efren, ralf etc have made alot of money in their career and live a very envied life whether most want to admit it or not.
i think to play just normal pro speed and not win tourneys not be marketable etc is kinda a waste of time.

one top player i know very well gets 112,000 a year before he hits a ball.
ive seen many comment on here about how they would never want to be him.

lets see he gets 112,000 a year and has for many years. he has girls launch on him every tourney he goes too.
he does nothing but ,travel, wear what he wants, plays golf, signs autographs and even plays pool once in a while.

now before we all go yeah but thats only one guy.

when you say the top pros ,i dont know any top pro that is broke and if he is thats not because he doesnt make good money playing pool. its because he loses it in casinos or is just and idiot at managing his money.

furthermore i know many broke pro golfers, bowlers, etc .

believe me life is short . if the average life span was 200 years i would quit pool.

since life is so short i would much rather make what i make, and have my life than have a career that i dont like and make twice as much.
im sure the top pros agree with me that why they keep at it.

until someone is a top pro at any game and see all the perks that go with that ,i think its hard to say i would never want to go that route.to each his own though.

for some its a way to ease the pain . they say to themselves or other people 'i would never want to be a pro anyway.its because they have tried to become a great player their whole life and couldnt ,so instead they say i didnt want to be a pro anyway.

i wanted to be a pro baseball player.
im not big enough or strong enough and knew it.
instead of saying to myself i never wanted that ,i said hell yes i wanted that but was never going to be able to pull it off.

anyway im not directing what im saying at anyone. im just saying when we talk about not wanting to be a broke top pro ,lets try to remember they are far from broke and wouldnt trade lives with 99.9 percent of people anywhere.

Great post John. I have a great family and what most would consider a great job, but everytime I am in the same room as one of the guys you mentioned above I am envious.

I want their talent, skill and to travel the world. Most won't admit this because they are dumb enough to believe if they didn't work 40 hours a week they could be a top pro. 99% of us don't possess the skill or talent to be a pro so we make excuses as to why we aren't pros. We say there is no money in the game so why try and things like that.

The fact is, there are too many players walking around calling themselves pros when their skill level is anything but. An open player is not a PRO they are short stops and don't have the ability or earning potential of the top pros.

A top pro can make money at this game, golf money no, but money.

Top pros need to run their life like a business. Plan their year in advance and make a business plan. The good ones do this, similiar to the top golf pros, and they live the life they want and play the game they love. Is it always great, no, but who's life is always great we all struggle from time to time.

Nothing in life is easy, but becoming the best at anything is probably worth it in the end.

Perhaps the title is misleading, but I did state that chances of making the top 100 in the world are very slim. Meaning if you're in the top 100 you do OK.

Nothing in life is easy, but becoming the best at anything is probably worth it in the end.

That's why I want to be the best in the world. I know, I know, unrealistic. But I have some great mentors in the game, I have the drive, and I KNOW I have what it takes.

Pool groupies are very real...pretty sure most of us can attribute a good score that wasnt cash related to pool. Also come on, think of your local pool room, now think of how many guys have dated or slept with the same girl in there. She's not a slut, well not just a slut...she's a pool groupie. Case closed. Where's Carmen Sandiego?

Tell'em Mikey. They don't call us the "Hood ornaments" because we look like a Jaguar now do they?

Nice Par, Craw...sorry watched Tin Cup last night and been laughin every since. Yeah they don't know nothing bout how we get down...there's two kinds of people at the end of a pool game...a winner and a loser...if they don't know well then I guess we know what kind of person they are.

time to find out before you make responsibilities

That's why I want to be the best in the world. I know, I know, unrealistic. But I have some great mentors in the game, I have the drive, and I KNOW I have what it takes.

The time to find out is before you make responsibilities. It is unrealistic for any one person to think they can be the best at anything. Millions of people trying and you think you are going to be the one? However somebody is always the one or among the very elite few. Nobody knows how far they can go without turning loose of all restrictions and trying all out without fear of failure.

I was talking to someone the other day and they asked me if I thought my competition expectations were reasonable and realistic. Absolutely not! However I would have never accomplished the few things I have accomplished had my expectations been reasonable and realistic. As long as what you are doing isn't hurting other people it is far better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all. Who knows, you might not fail.

I'll take that to heart, trust me. Thanks for the post.

Most that I knew could have saved enough over their years in pool. Most would make a big score and look to put it back in action at the table, track, or casino.

You just identified a big part of the problem. A lot of these guys can't stand to stick to pool, they have to gamble at other games where they do not have an advantage. The classic example is Cliff winning thousands in a tournament and having to borrow money to leave town after the casino got through with him. Another is Fats. At his all of fame induction speech he is rambling on about what a great card player he was. I've heard others say he made a fortune at pool and lost it all back at cards and ended up living off charity.

The bad part comes when they age and their game declines and they can't make money the same way at the pool table, never saved any of it...not a pretty picture.

You my friend...get it. Thanks. Johnnyt

I beg to differ, my dear.
Well, I suppose I wouldn't be on the receiving end. So there is a slight chance I could be wrong :) I just have a hard time imagining that one. From personal experience, it tends to be the other way around. The guys tend to be quite enamored / persistent chasers with the ladies of the sport.

I'm not going to name names but that's wrong....

If you're a top pro (meaning way above average) you can't go broke. For that to happen, you'd have to have a lack of common sense and be extremely irresponsible with your share of winnings.

Yes, I envy top pro's ability and would love to be one of them. Competing against the very best in the world must be the ultimate challenge. Besides, what other job gives you the opportunity to travel as much and see the world? All the power to you guys...wishing you well...

You can easily go broke and many do.

The biggest problem I've seen is players who think that their chances of winning on the pool table translate into other games, like poker, craps, blackjack, roulette...... the horses..... etc....

These other games can be learned to play and be successful at, but they take as much dedication and natural ability that pool does, and if you think that you're going to be great at everything, then you'll go broke quicker than you can blink.,....

I remember Jimmy Reids girl friend he'd met back in I think the sixties, and even tho they broke up, she still kept hookin' up with pool players, as far as I know she never hit a ball. Traveling around with Jimmy in his prime would of been incredibly invigorating/addictive to any woman, it would of been difficult to walk away from pool once you had a taste of his game/stlye..She was a groupie for life.
