I did something so embarrasing lastnight :(

Our cash league has a tournament at the end of each session for the best player on each team. Last night it was an $800 winner take all event.

During my second match I have a long, AWFUL cut shot. There is a guy directly in my line of sight twitching his right hand on his knee.

The whole room was watching my table. It's a small room and all of the matches were completed except mine. I did what I've done numerous times before. I kind of shook my hand and mouthed, "stop that." He grabbed his twitching right hand with his left. Stood up and immediately walked out of my line of sight.

At this moment, I knew I had screwed up. This guy has Parkinson's. My grandmother had Parkinson's. Ohh, I feel so awful.

I apologized profusely after the match. I still feel like an a-hole. :frown:

Lesson learned: Maybe getting sharked isn't the worst thing in the world.

You're only an asshole if you knew he had Parkinson's and did it anyways. How were you supposed to know? Yes getting sharked is not the worst thing in the world but neither is making an innocent mistake. Don't beat yourself up so bad. imo.

Here, I'll make ya feel better...

Years and years ago was with a girl on the Riverwalk......it had been a hot, long day and we were headed for the room to cool down....a group of 10 or so people were blocking almost all of this rugged section.....we found a way to tip-toe along the edge and get passed.....it was one of those smooth sidesteps and we got through quickly....

A few steps by, I took a glance back.....three of the people where helping a guy with a wheelchair get through the bumps.....

I know exactly how ya felt :D

I definately AGREE with BVal. I am sure everyone has done something similar, and if bothered you, you had every right to ask him to move.

Wow, that's a tough one, matta. I feel awful for you and the spectator, but we are all human and subject to moments like this...especially when competing. By apologizing (and posting your story on AZB) it shows that you really care and didn't mean to belittle him. Apologizing and time are the only things that will make you feel better...beating yourself up won't do it.

If that is the worst thing you have done in life, you are a saint. All you can do is say your sorry and move on.

Larry

Listen to the others who've told you not to beat yourself up about it. You didn't now, so you're innocent. You apologized, as a person of character would do. We've all made mistakes like this, some don't have the stones to admit to the mistake and own up. Now get over it.

Thank you all. I guess I feel a little better.

I will still probably pay little more attention before asking a guy to stop twitching in my line of sight.

I was pledging a fraternity in 1985. It was almost hell week and there was a knock at my door. This guy was in a wheelchair pushing the automatic thing with his chin. He had a helmet and everything. I thought they were pulling another prank on me. So, I'm pointing and laughing. Come to find out the guy was trying to get directions in my dorm, and had it written on a sheet of paper he had taped to the chair. So, don't feel so bad. I just knew I was going to hell for that.

I once had a part time job at Sears near the Furniture dept in Carpeting. After a few weeks on the job this guy from Furniture sidled over and started making small talk. After some dead air i come up with " Who is that midget I see in your department sometimes, he looks like a little preacher in those suits"!

"Oh, you must mean my son"-"hamana hamana hamana..."

I used to work with a 60+ year old cop who had early stage Parkinsons. Not many people wanted to stand next to him at the range. At a close distance was was passable but at 25 yards he was as likely to hit the target next to his or shoot a squirrel out of a tree as he was to hit his own target.

This is going to be a good thread . . . :D

I'm going to reply from a different angle. I do not have Parkinsons disease and I probably couldn't tell you if someone did.

I am missing my left arm below the elbow. I get people who try to help me all the time. Sometimes they eveen try to help me walk!:p I understand these people are trying to be nice. I also get negative help like people telling me I can't test ride a motorcycle(I have riden for several years), or can't do some job, etc. It goes with the territory. My preference are those people whom don't have an issue about my arm, can ask questions, don't shield their children and let me say what I cannot do.

If my hook was bothering you taking a shot, I would consider it an honer to have you say knock it off. Frankly, I'm not above trying to use it to shark someone! It is just another type of hand.

That guy probably was glad that you had the balls to treat him normal and tell him to quit interupting your shot. I'm not suggesting he did it on purpose, but c'mon, he knows he has Parkinsons. I would guess his friends tell him to quit shakin', I'm trying to shoot over here!

Anyways, this post is not meant to offend, just to look at the other side of the coin.

Now one thing which did piss me off was when I beat a guy in the year end league tournament and he had the balls to ask tthe tournament director to disqualify me because I was shooting with my homemade bridge hand. It only pissed me off because surely able bodied rules do not address these thingss well. I'm just afraid a rule like no performance enhancing cue devices or something might get misapplied to me. It would be funny to see what would happen if I ever got good enough to even entter a pro tournament!

You aren't the worst person in the world, and feeling bad about it is a good thing, imo. I would beat myself up about that, too.

The last thing in the world I want to do is act like an @ss to someone who doesn't deserve it. If I'm wrong, I will apologize, as you did.

Congratulations for having a conscience...

Excellent post.

I had a friend in college who had lost both legs in a tractor accident. He said the worst thing about being handicapped wasn't the @ssholes, it was the well-meaning people who were trying so hard not to stare, that they ignored him completely. They acted like he didn't exist, instead of potentially offending him by staring...Which offended him more than a harmless look ever could.

When you see a handicapped person, look them in the eyes, and say "Hey, how are you doing?", just like you would to anyone else...Believe me, that's what almost all of them want.

Eh Matt we all have our moments so stop beating yourself up about it. I doubt that guy is still thinking about it.

I also did something very embarrassing last night..............but I'm damn sure not gonna tell you what it was.
