Is it ability? Is it consistency? or is it how many and what championships you've won? Or is it how you match up for the cash? Or a combination?

Jaden

I didn't include combination as a choice but you can select as many as you want.

IMO in the pool world the word champion is used more as a descriptive term than an actual title. I guess it is like the old joke about obscenity....I know it when I see it.

Perfect example is our newly skinny friend Chris Bartram. He hasn't won any major championships that I am aware of but he has matched up and beaten a few who have. To me a guy like that is considered a champion.

I think if you win a major event you earn the title whether you ever match up outside of a tournament or not, or ever win another major. That said not all champions are equal.... some become legends.

"Champion" is a term used quite freely in sports.

Once a player is able to acquire the mechanical skills and execute them consistently, the rest of it is upstairs. Jimmy Reid always said that a good player must be a positive thinker and surround himself with this kind of environment in order to succeed. Jimmy Reid is a champion. Some people are a champion and a legend in their own mind, and maybe that's what it's all about.

cham⋅pi⋅on  /ˈtʃæmpiən/ :

–noun 1. a person who has defeated all opponents in a competition or series of competitions, so as to hold first place: the heavyweight boxing champion.
2. anything that takes first place in competition: the champion of a cattle show.
3. an animal that has won a certain number of points in officially recognized shows: This dog is a champion.
4. a person who fights for or defends any person or cause: a champion of the oppressed.
5. a fighter or warrior.

It's your brains. I've seen guys who can't run out anywhere near a "champion level" beat the hell out of champions because they play smarter.

It's brains/heart.

What makes a champion is heart!

A champion still needs all the proper tools and habits to include: confidence, skill, work ethic, etc...

all of the things

All of the things mentioned but you have to know deep inside yourself that you are a champion to be a real champion. The stars can line up just right and the pool gods be in the mood to play a practical joke and one of several hundred people can win a major event and be a "champion". In pool there are less than a few dozen real champions, maybe less than a dozen. It is a combination of tangibles and intangibles that make a champion. Self knowledge is a huge part of it and so is ego although the ego can be self contained.

The first thing you have to do to become a champion is enter the tournament. Nothing can be accomplished, unless you try.

I was laughed at, for entering the Eastern States Nine-ball Championship in 1982, and when I finished third, I was told, it was a fluke, by Freddie Rita. He told me he was going down to play the following year. He said, "If I could do that well, he could probably, win it." Freddy died a couple of months later. He waited too long to see if he was capable of playing and beating, the top player's. To this day, I still regret, Freddy not sticking around long enough, for me, to prove him wrong.

I guess what I'm trying to say is," The last thing you have to do is, "Believe in yourself and your ability. Carry yourself, like a champion, win or lose. And of course, get out and play."

Champions are made by their want to push forward to what they want...

What makes a champion is "A Burning Desire to succede" Its pool not running, most people are physically able to do anything on a table. The mechanics and mental abilities can all be learned and taught to someone. But without Passion, Desire, and like Eddie Felson said some CHARACTER. There's plenty of people out there that can make balls like anyone else, all you gotta ask yourself is "do you really want this?" If the answer is yes...then surely with enough hard work you could be better than Mosconi. Anyone can say ohhh b.s. gotta have talent or whatever, talent is a myth. Talent makes you maybe the best in the city, buring desire makes you the best in the world.

I think the only thing talent determines is just how fast you can learn something, not how much of it can be learned. Some people can learn something 10x quicker then others. While there is no cap for either one on how much can be learnt, there is a cap on how FAST it can be learnt... that is talent.

A regular champion is 90% sweat and 10% talent.

For the truly gifted champions, you gotta be born with it. Seems to be true in most areas of life.
