I hope they still have energy left to set up the tables! ZING!

Get off your dead ass and meet me in Galveston next week. We can challenge Shane and Schmitty to some scotch doubles arm wrestling.

Not sure either one of us would need the other!

And YOU are a good man. Good things happen to good people! :)

I'm doing this MMA fight right now, a job from hell. The announcer says, "One thing about heavyweights, when they fall, they fall hard, and that's a lot of combined weight coming down at one time." :grin-square:

One man you may never want to arm wrestle with is Hillbilly.

Toughest arm wrestling I've ever seen, bar none!

Every time I read about Galveston, I can't help but think of Glen Campbell's song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2tgVAML2gE

Are there really sea winds in Galveston? :)

And why does Glen Campbell say "cleaning my gun, thinking of Galveston"?

I love that song JAM..

Regarding 'cleaning my gun' in the song....I found this tidbit about the writer of the song....

"Jimmy Webb was on a beach in Galveston when he wrote the lyrics to the song. He made up the story about a soldier in the Spanish-American war and the girl he left behind.

The Vietnam War was going on when Campbell released the song, which was considered an antiwar song."

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'

I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston

A version from more recent years....he thanks Jimmy Webb at the beginning :)

I'm here in Galveston. Moody Gardens is a fabulous place and the Convention Center is huge. There will be 40 Diamond 9' tables on the pro side and I don't know how many 7' tables on the amateur side (a lot!). They are spending quite a bit of money to put this event on. That is evident. There is bleacher seating going up for close to a thousand people. And a separate venue for the television table.

Haven't seen many players yet and I heard it will be late getting underway tomorrow. They will have to work all night to get everything set up. I'm guessing that substantial money will be lost this first year. To make this thing go (and grow) they have to be in it for the long haul. Greg Sullivan once told me he lost money the first three years at DCC.

The promoters are trying hard to do things right. I got in about 4 PM at the Houston Airport. In less than 15 minutes a van was here to take me to Galveston. It's a 45 minute drive. One thing for sure. We need another big event on American soil. Maybe this will be it - in time. The first year of any new event is always the toughest. I'm here to support it by playing, staking someone and spending a few bucks.

Hey Jay, Who is your horse these days? You throwing Tang in the box still? Are you still playing some? Just curious..

Doc, are these the 9footers, or the bar tables (or both), that they haven't set up yet?

Lou Figueroa

Lou, when I left the venue at 12:15 this A.M., there were 30 9-footers set up, and they were tweeking the lights. One of the techs said they were supposed to set up 10 big tables in the front of the venue for practice, action, etc. He also said they brought 147 7' tables, and that he believed they were going to set up 45. I could be dead wrong on the numbers.

I didn't see any other 9' tables waiting to be set up. They'd have to create an entire add'l row of 10 tables to do that. They could, but I just don't see it yet. There's no light grids for them either. The local lighting guys really messed them up. The Diamond guys said they've been there since MONDAY waiting on them...

I'm heading over there in a few minutes to see if they're ready to roll.

This has the potential to become a great annual classic. There are way more plusses than there are minuses.

Galveston

There is no doubt this can be a great event. The community of players and cue makers and advertisers need to support this event. The more we can have in American the better off we will be in the future. Let them come to us live by our rules and spend their money here not ours there.
I can get on a soap box about this kind of thing. Us or our country does not owe nothing to the overseas crowd. They owe nost of wht they have to us.
I will shut up.

Did not see Mark last night, but very few players were there. I guess we'll find out today how many showed up for the One Pocket. I've heard the frield will be fairly large. That would be nice.

As far as the live TV production, there is an area with one table cordoned off, but no equipment in there as yet. I did run into Jim Wyche who said he had been hired to do commentary. We'll just have to see what happens in this regard. My sense is the promoters have their hands full with this baby right now. I've got my fingers crossed that it all works out okay.

Thanks for the update Jay. Good luck competing in the events you have entered.

wish i was there. sounds like a blast. thanks for all the updates folks!

knifemaker...While I may agree with you in principle, the truth is this...the overseas players are playing better, because they WORK at it (and have coaches, as well as some subsidy of funds). Sadly, we Americans are lazy. Add to that, most pro players can't see the value in having a coach/trainer...they're too busy looking for "action"!

Sure, some of them may have a coach/trainer but what value does that really bring them in pool??? Want to know why the Fillipinos play so much better? It's not because of coaches/trainers, it's because they get in the grease and gamble with each other day in, day out. So it's action, not trainers, that make them excell.... Same with most of the Asian players. Did Johnny, Earl, Keither, Buddy, Lassiter, Siegel, Varner ever have a coach trainer? No!!! A coach/trainer gives a pro caliber player zero advantage over another and is most likely a hinderance if anything.

Scmidty has you pegged....

Wow...$200 divided by 12 days is less than $17 a day!...and that's probably for a reasonably nice place, with a kitchen, living room, etc. Wish I could find something like that for the DCC!

so youre saying that there is no value in pro sports to athletes having access to coaches or trainers? that they would all get better if they just went out and played? really?
