A real creep

Great....Thanks Lenny....as soon as I posted about how you didntr respond to all this crap....you do....right before me......lol

Pride Stings............

Grady fell victum to exactly what he feels that he is entitled too.....thats reverence and respect.

If i'm Jimmy and a former champion just hops off a plane and shows up at my shop and starts barking about playing and not playing cheap. I would be very leary about getting in the game. It's Grady freaking Mathews! But Jimmy having as much gamble as he does played the game even though he wasnt sure how he stood to come out of it......Because think about it........its Grady Mathews! Jimmy has to be thinking that he might be on the wrong end of that game.....And for anyone who still believes that Grady was pressued into playing I would have to rethink that. It can be asumed that Grady has a penchant for getting himself into bad games nowadays as proven by the Henderson match. Which basically turned into a 500 dollar an hour practice match for John.

My problem is with Grady besmirching the reputation of the room owner and Lenny by coming here and namecalling and questioning their honor as men. Lenny has still taken the high road by posting his and the owners view on the situation and not commenting ANY further. How strong is that? That should go a long way in determining what really happened that day.

At the end of the day the story boils down to a one time lights out player really refusing to admit that his game has slipped and living his past exploits in his own head might not be finacially feasable in 2010................

Kudos - Very well said!!!!!

I was not going to reply anymore to this but its beginning to be spun by people who do not know and were not there or are twisting things to be what its not. I do not plan on posting anymore in this thread because it really is just a sour thing for me, as I said Grady is a legend and I respect him and what he has done for the game and I hated to come on here and say he was wrong and not telling the whole story. I also am disappointed how it all turned out, what should have been a memorable weekend turned out to be a mess but how was Jimmy to know he was going to beat Grady and that Grady would be seething with anger over it.

I will bet it does not

"Don't give up, don't ever give up"
-Jim Valvano

I will bet that this event does NOT retire you from gambling. I remember you running young guns over at Olathe on more than one occasion. Take this as a lesson learned and watch the video. I did not see the evening beating you took but I did watch you play Henderson, if that is what you call it. Take a look at all the shots you missed and you sold the farm way too many times on flyers.
:eek::eek::eek::eek:

I don't know any of the parties involved here, but have read through this thread with interest and here's my .02.

A game was made and as I recall, it takes two to make a game and terms need to be agreed on.

No one makes a game and gambles because they think they're going to lose (unless they're dumping which is a different animal altogether) - you gamble because you want to win and take down the cash, and anyone whose ever gambled and won can attest to the enjoyment that comes with that.

The flip side to that is the feeling you get when you see your opponent fire in the game ball and you're done - you're either out of cash or know you can't win. There's no enjoyment there.

If you gamble, you'll see both sides. It's a given.

Grady is a veteran of many wars over the years and I'm sure that he's seen the highs (winning the cash) and the lows (losing the cash) many more times than we can count.

Is he wrong is this instance? Based off what I've read,I would say yes and his post is uncalled for.

Having said that, that doesn't diminish what he's brought to the game over the years and the respect that I have for his experience and knowledge.

I would hope that at his age, I would be entitled to some measure of respect for my contributions to my chosen career and a measure of understanding for my mistakes, of which we all make more than we care to admit (at any age).

If you owned a country club and Tom watson appeared and asked to play 9 holes of golf just for practice, I promise the entire staff and members would leap at the opportunity and not cheap hustle him in any manner.
He embarrassed and humiliated me and I didn't like it one bit. This episode may retire me from gambling. With guys like this it's just not fun anymore.
This is all I have to say on this matter.

When Hord Hardin was Chairman of Augusta National he always wanted to be kept informed of who was on the grounds. One day an assistant pro comes into his office and says "Mr. Hardin, Tom Watson is here with a couple of friends and just teed off a little while ago, thought you would want to know." Mr. Hardin gets in his golf cart and speeds down the first fairway. He catches up with Watson's group at around the third green, comes to a screeching halt, and jumps out of the cart. Watson, assuming Hardin is there to say hello, walks over to him to shake his hand. Hardin says to Watson, "Mr. Watson, as a Masters Champion, you are only an honorary member of the club. As such your playing privileges do NOT extend to guests."

From all reports Watson apologized, said he wasn't aware of the restriction, and promised it would never happen again.

Nom Nom Nom

Ex-World Class player and big gambler walks into my arena and agrees to a set.. then gets knocked off for some change.. you know I'm not going to have a regret in the world. Some of us have real jobs and work hard to pay our bills(and taxes), so we don't get the luxury of having thousands flying back and forth. Damn skippy, I'd thank them for it and offer to bring them back the next day.

The rest is on you, Grady. Hopefully it is just a momentary thing.

P.S.- Any oldtimers want to play some bank pool? :D

He's just venting guys. I am sure 90+% have gone off before after losing a money match. This is probably his way of showing the frustration. Even if it didn't go down word for word as he said vs what Lenny said, who cares? Let him vent and stop overanalyzing it. You act like its the first vent thread he has done on here. Bounce back Grady and get him next time, I wish I had half the talent you do and enjoy the occasional Grady story on here.

I will say this Mike that Grady is not like any of our grandfathers, he is a champion pool player, a hustler, a legend. What your saying is spinning the situation, he is not just some old guy, we are talking about a 300+ ball runner and one of the top one pocket players in the world at one time. The only thing I can think is that Grady does not know or realize he cannot play to that level anymore.

Grady was looking for action otherwise he would have said I am tired and just want to practice and never brought up not playing cheap and that he has to bet something. I did have the power if you want to call it to tell Grady that he should not play and for Jimmy to not play, they probably would not have listened and matched up anyway. I did not want to offend Grady and make decisions for him, he is a grown man.

Knowing now he is very physically and mentally unwell after this all I would have not let him play Jimmy but then again he should not have been playing for $3000 either if we look at it like that. He was there to play for $3000, he was there to gamble, not for an exhibition.

Was losing in a gambling match the humiliating/embarrassing part of it all or was it his condition? I got remarks from many people that they never have seen Grady like that and asking what was wrong with him. I do not know his health problems but he is not well so I feel sad for him because of that, he should not be gambling period ever again is my conclusion but I have a feeling it wont be his last rodeo, its in his blood.

As I said Grady made the game and the stakes thinking he was in a soft game and was going to take the room owner for a couple dollars and even gave his little talk before the match about being gentleman win or lose and this and that. No big deal if the hunter goes into the woods and shoots a bear but if the bear kills the hunter its headline news.

It's ok to disagree Lenny. We just do. I don't find your arguments compelling in this situation and you don't find mine compelling. Nothing personal.

I agree, if you read San Jose Dicks post what we have hear are two sides, the gamblers and the fun players. I have sympathy for grandpa the fun player but not for grandpa the former great one pocket player and hustler.

If I lose tomorrow in my match would you feel bad for me?, what about the many people I have beaten?, I feel bad for very few when gambling because they would take my money. I get pleasure from winning and playing well, sometimes I play well and win and sometimes I play well and lose, sometime I play bad and win or lose. The best pleasure for me in pool and gambling/playing is both players playing a great match.

I will be at Kolbys in a couple hours in some action, 100-200 a set giving up 10-6, your welcome to come sweat it or practice some with me later on. I would like to show you something also that I just improved my game on that is very important in one pocket, its magic. :)

Lenny,

Grady's "condition" has been a problem for him for at least several years now. I first learned of it at DCC back a few years ago when he was playing Justin Cone getting phenomenal weight and lost too I believe. I was watching Grady's match with Roadman and talking to Stan Shuffett about Grady and he told me it happens when Grady's gets under pressure or plays from what I understand. It was something to see and nearly unbelievable that he could even hit a ball let alone pocket one.

But I agree with you 100% on this. I believe you to be a true stand-up guy here and hate to see this thing get blown out of proportion and have the spin laid down otherwise. I wish you well on your venture and thank you for streaming the match although I did not get to see it.

sorry lenny nothing can help my one pocket game. won't be over until tomorrow. noon right?

ps. I do feel sorry for people when bad things happen to them. Mostly the people that never had a chance. i dont' take joy in people being abused i don't care if they were once a stone cold gambler/killer like most of the people on this forum seem to be. and here's fair warning. If i see you taking advantage of someone gambling i will knock your action if i get a chance. as i would if i saw someone taking advantage of you. I apologize in advance.

What would everyone's impression be if a player say 40-50 years younger acted like Grady did with his awkward movements, one stroking the ball and appearance to be out of it?

You do not think I am taking advantage of Jude tomorrow?

P.S. If I am at a higher ability level or lower then someone and the game is way out of line I try to play cheap. The guy I am playing tonight is a degenerate and has to gamble, , he will lose it at the casino, it entertainment for him.

Grady won that match, the fire alarm match, getting 20-10.
