Can you own to many cues?

I have 5 cues now, not in any form of a collection where they are all the same make but just what appeals to me.
I see there are some who own 100 or more cues but really can only play with one at a time. Do you think owning more then a few cues at a time is frivolous and are there better things to do with your money or its okay to own as many cues because yo can afford them?
Personally if i could afford them i would buy 100 or more.
To me its like fine art but usable.

I know quite a few people, who simply buy cues as an investment.

Don't we all wish, that we would have bought a Szamboti, Schick or Bushka, when they cost just a few hundred dollars?

Heck, even a Schon bought 10 years and still in mint condition, is probably worth quite a bit more than it cost.

Simply said, I think people should be able to spend their money on whatever they want to.

Too many cues??? If that's your thing, then you can never have too many cues.

Nah, if you got the money and it's your thing go for it. Now if you are like my dad and every time he hits a ball bad you change cues that might be a problem.

IMO most "collectors" arent collectors. They are guys buying the wrong cues and get disappointed when they cant sell them for either what they paid for them or even close to it.

Buying the right cues, or the right anything usually yeilds good results. I keep the cues that IMO, have value, and I can at least break even on. I flip alot a cues and at worst break even on every one.

Yes, you can have too many. I think I do, but it can be very rewarding to collect cues but randomly buying cues to just have them is not rewarding.

If you get into it, there are issues with storage and insurance. Also, it's better to keep some sort of focus and to maintain sources for expert repair and restoration - knowing who can do what.

I have focused on old Palmer's and Brunswick's, and found there were so many out there that I could keep plenty busy with just that. Also, buying at the right price will keep you going. I bought at retail in the beginning. For the last few years I've only bought at wholesale or bargain prices.

Overpaying is the number 1 reason for losing money on cues.

Maybe we can have a cue buyer's intervention, like on TV.

Well said Mr. Baxter:thumbup:

Right now, I have about a half dozen customs. I buy one or two a year. To me, I buy what I like and what makers I desire. Just because I don't "specialize" in one thing, to me, doesn't make my cue collection less desirable, to myself. I mean I am the one who's safe they are sitting in. It may be different if I was trying to be a cue dealer and flip cues. IMO that's totally different. I think you can be a cue collector, and collect Cuetec's, if thats your thing and thats what you enjoy:wink:.

With that said, I am pretty certain all of my cues could be sold for at least what I paid for them, in most cases more. I do find it addictive and always investigating would cue maker I am going to go after next. But I also look at it as an art form and personally enjoy well crafted, beautiful cues.

You can never own too many cues. They are like books. The one with the most cues...wins in the end. :)

just thank god The Franklin Mint hasn't gone into the cue business

I don't know how anyone could tell you that it is right or wrong, or rewarding or not, or an incorrect choice of purchase without knowing your thoughts and likes.

Its entirely what you personally enjoy of course.

I've been in love with this game for a good 50 yrs. and for me, I wouldn't spend more than 150 or so on a cue, nor would I have more than a few laying around, so I don't even think it has anything to do with the game itself, its all what you like.

On the other hand, if you are buying cues to find the one with that perfect hit .... well then ..... I'd be simply changing cue tips till I got what I like.

If you think having to many cues is a bad thing try selling some in this market and then see how you feel about it.

I too would like to thin down my collection to about 5 cues but I don't want to do it in this climate. Don't get me wrong I don't need to make money on my cue sales but I would like to at least break even when selling. Well that ain't happening right now so I will hold onto my cues in hopes that the market comes back at some point in time.

Do you collect with the intent to sell or do you buy 'cause you love cues? I guess that would be your answer. I love pool, love cues but can't seem to hang on to mine:smile:

That's not fair Jack. you can make yourself a replacement any time you want.:)
The cues i own are the ones i ordered except for 1. But one day i might sell all but 1.

My dad awalys said "one's good, two is better", I like that logic so I have 2 of almost everything ;).

100 cues is excessive but i'm a excessive person. I'm thinning down my inventory i want to own about 60-65. I had a collection of 4-8 for about 20 years and you appericate each one more cause you can spend more time with each cue the less you have. I visit all my cues at least once every 6 months, and some are $100 cues I love as much as $25,000 cue's. Price, number of inlays, etc. Dosent matter to me, the history of the cue, what I have done with it etc matters more.

Point is do what makes you happy, I wouldnt be happy owning 1000 cues, I would feel stupid. Like whqat I had almost 20 cars and I saw pics of them in a magazine(Corey just posted that pic i a different thread) I felt embarassed when I saw all those cars, so I got rid of half of them. I dont want anymore cars, I might sell a car and get a new one someday I havent had a new car in 4 years, I was flipping 1-2 cars a month for alomst a year and a half-I wanted to experience everything I could. But to own 50-100 cars like some of my friends I think is dumb. But thay are happy so cant knock them.

Live life to its fullest, i been crippled up for almost 5 years now, for 3 years I couldnt drive, now I can drive 80% of the time and that's better than any car or cue there is. So whe nthe oppertuniity is there for whatever take it, ya never know.....
