Worlds Greatest Player vs. the Peoples Champion

Why do you rip on Earl so much? Have you had bad experiences with him?

im not ripping on earl.
they called svb out and say they will win.
im mjust saying earl is not in svb league.
earl is a good player im not calling him out he called svb out.

im just saying the facts are svb is a big fav .

RB,
Actually the challenge initially posted in the other thread was a generic one, sent out to any and all challengers; Shane just happened to be one who had the crust to answer it.

Many in this thread have made it out like Earl was out to seek a specific advantage over Shane; not true. He just sent out an open challenge for a match with equipment and rules to minimize luck - I believe he was willing to take on anyone.

The posters who have twisted that to make it look like Earl was trying to get an "advantage" over Shane specifically evidently did not read or understand the initial thread. Shane is to be commended for accepting the challenge (if indeed he really did).

Ok. Understood

Do you think Earl would win if he were in his prime? Say, 20 years ago or so?

On a side note, I think it is quite strange that Earl is insisting on a 10 X 5 table. I mean, just play on a standard 9 footer with tight pockets. 10 footers are so rare, just play on a 9 footer- in fact I don't think I've ever seen a 10 footer in any pool hall I've been to and I've been to many. I doubt Earl plays on a 10 footer on any regular basis.

i think svb would win playing 10 ball on a diamond
at any time say 10 years 2 years or 20.
going off the way svb plays now he would win any time.

thats just my opp you asked for it.

The Earl of 15-20 years ago was a superior tournament player. Of course the game was 9-Ball then. But if it had been Ten Ball, I doubt that would have made much difference. Want to know why? Very simple! He missed fewer balls and played better position. His break wasn't too shabby either. And he could do that day and night for weeks and months if necessary. Shane is good, very good, but Earl was still a notch better in tournament play. He just had a higher gear. You had to see it Chris in the 80's and early 90's. Earl was AWESOME! Sigel was great and a winner all the way, but Earl had a higher gear even then Mike.

Now when it came to gambling at pool, I would have picked Buddy and Parica both over Earl in his prime. In fact Jose beat him pretty bad in their one match-up for the cash. But gambling is a little different animal as you know.

Shane today is close to Earl's top speed but it's just not the same game as watching Earl in his prime. He made it look so easy. Shane is working out there. Earl looked like he was practicing!

WOW! That's quite a statement about Earl but you are known for calling it like you see it. You did that throughout your book, "POOL WARS". If the readers of this forum haven't read your book, they would be treating themselves to MANY "pool wars" ACCOUNTS.

Mostly, I saw road players in the 80's passing through New Orleans and didn't get a chance to see Earl play then but it must have been quite a sight. Earl passed through only one time and the only action he could get was at one pocket and he passed on that. (not with me). I forget who was willing to play him one pocket from the Sport Palace.

That could have been me. I walked past Earl holding court outside the pool room where Charlie Williams was holding the "World 10 Ball Championships" in Jacksonville and he was saying that to fix pool the game had to be played on a 5x10 with tight pockets and no side pockets. The gentlemen he was addressing were nodding in agreement. I have found myself to be in the same postion on occasions since.

Still one of my favorite Earl stories. When he gets wound up and going you can really see how much he truly loves the game even if some of the things he says don't make much sense. The flip side is some of his nuttier sounding theories do have somethings that make you say "Hmmmm"

Right you are; you and Jay share interesting stories all the time on here, and they stick in my mind. :p Much respect to yall.

it looks like ralf souqet works hard too.
thats cause he is.
just cause someone makes it look easy does not mean they are a better player.
earls nine ball break wont work for 10 ball.

Chris i think the fact that Earl played killer 9 ball doesn't mean he couldn't have been just as deadly @ 10 ball back then, just dial in the break and it's on

Good points

I think you could argue that Earl is the greatest 9 ball tournament player ever- not sure about gambling matches, but he was very consistent tournament wise in the '80s and '90s

perhaps Shane's biggest edge is that he doesn't seem to melt down. Earl seems to have always been his own worst enemy

just cause someone makes it look easy does not mean they are a better player.

What does it mean?

You just won't believe an old school player was better than anything around today. Even after several people who actually saw both with their own eyes tells you so.

He did have one of the best breaks in the game. 30-40 years takes a little something off the break ;)

Corey isprobably the best 9 ball player of all time. He played so good when he was younger that all the old guys got pissed off and had to change the rules! What a joke! If they didn't change the rules he probably wins half the tournaments and actually tries. Save the Earl stuff for people that don't have DVD players and can see how "great" the older generation played.

Joke is right

Is that right?

If I remember correctly, the soft break evolved was around for a few years before it was outlawed.

How many world championships-major titles did Cory win during the 'soft break' period? One...2001 US Open

And I don't think the soft break was used then....

Cory is a fine player and all, but 'the best' is stretching it a bit. (No disrespect to Cory at all, as I'm pretty sure he'd agree.)

What you guys don't know, or aren't taking into consideration is his health.

He hasn't been healthy in a long, long time.
