League Players

Eric, you would have had better luck getting a game by dressing up as a milk-man.

Oh man, why did you have to drag me into this. :p

I was in Tampa, Nov. of '09 and asked JohnnyT to play, since he was looking for mid level players to match up with. I was in town for an APA sponsored, league player(and non league player) tourney. JohnnyT did decline.

I do use CTE. I play league too.

This past weekend was APA cities for Dade county. I got to watch alot of play bc I was on two teams out of 32. There are alot of players in APA who u are right Johnnyt, they cant run 4 balls. IMO though thats one of the beauties of high level tournaments, that you will see so much drama that is unexpected. Case in point, yesterday I saw a 4 miss an 8ball twice that was less than 6 inches from the pocket. On our own team, our 4 in the finals was winning 2-0 racing to 3 and had a ball about 4 inches from the pocket but he was froze on the side rail and cutting the ball in. He miscued and from there it goes double hill. Double hill, The shot he plays a combination with his last two balls, makes both in the side/corner and gets hooked on 8. Kicks at 8 HARD. Length of the table up and down, barely thinning the 8 and the 8 dribbles in front of a pocket and his opponent has a three ball runout to win and doesnt get out. The lesser players inject SO much drama into watching because you just never know what will happen.

You are all right. This was a bad post by me. It was meant as a joke after I watched a FEW APA players on the stream. I apologize to all league players and anyone I offended on AZ. Johnnyt

Nice follow up post johnny t,we all make mistakes, anybody that reads your post in the past knows that you allways have great stories and knowledge to go along with it,i didnt think u meant it to be as bad as it sound it,i for 1 look forward to your many posts to come!

Hey, remember that time JohnnyT made that post about league players, and then realized it offended some people and apologized for his inflammatory post, but still caught a load of crap for it?
I'm one of those formerly crappy players, and I'm only slightly less crappy now... but I can totally see where he's coming from. If you gain any kind of knowledge base in the game, it's torture to watch Mr. Hot $hit APA 4 fram at his object balls and throw a fit in disgust at nothing going in. On the other hand, it's rewarding to see someone who's never held a cue before give a legit try and reach a milestone and know that you might have turned them on to a new hobby.

I was watching some league play being streamed today for a few hours off and on. APA I think it was. I came away with one conclusion. Nobody should be allowed to play in any competition until they can run at least 4 balls in a row and have some idea where and how to get the CB there for the next shot. They must play the ghost by themselves until they can beat the 3-ball ghost. I have no idea what an APA 4 is in terms of A< B< C< D ratings, but if an APA 4 is= to a D player I must have been born a “C” player because I can’t ever remember playing that awful. Now I see why they sell so many of those aiming systems.

And for the people that say they are just playing for the fun of it or to socialize…I didn’t see that on their faces. What I saw for the most part was frustration on their faces because they kept missing balls 6 inches from the pocket or scratching every other time they made a ball. No wonder most league players don’t watch and don’t know the names of the top pro players. They couldn’t handle the truth. Sorry league players. I know there are some very good league players out there some where, I just have yet to see any for myself. Johnnyt
You must have be Jonesin to watch some pool :)

I'll offer him a (almost) free roll, does that make you feel better? I'll put up 3 people that play in my league, he can pick which one he wants to play. He beat em in a race to 15 on a 9' table, I'll give him $1000. He loses, he buys me and the player dinner.

Now there's an offer that is too good to pass up. Put me in if he can't make it.

I see some pretty horrible league play, but they always seem to be having fun. Certainly more than most of the "serious" players. All I know is that our best room in town probably doesn't pull in $400 a week from the serious playing crowd, but does very well with APA, kids and bangers. Without them, there would be no place to play.

I shot a hornets nest with a 30/30 one time just to see what would happen

Yeah well, I threw rocks at one ONCE! So there.
See, you should get the idea by the word, ONCE.
Me not that stupid to do it twice.
But then again, I also shot a cow pie with a 22 close up once too.
Top that one.
I had to change my clothes, wash my face and I found out what recycled grass tastes like.
Didn't taste like milk.

We need more people not afraid of the truth ,thanks Johnny. I'm sure alot of people have fun playing in leauges and if that works for them GREAT!! I gave leauges a fair shake ,even did a tour of APA .At best I am a total non conformist and could never really mesh into the whole leauge atmosphere .It was a great re introduction to playing but now feel my $$ is better spent on some focused practice and a local tournament .Like most players who can make more than 4 balls in a row I shot up to a 7 in APA and was told to lay off by a team capt. If anyone really likes leauges and lives in the metro atlanta area I suggest TAP in marietta on tues and thurs nights at the Marietta Billiard Club.Im just not a team player and prefer to either play in a tournament ,with a good sparing partner , or by myself.Almost every night I ever played in leauges I had this feeling in my gut that if I played in leauges that I would stay at the same level and not grow as a player. So about 3 months ago I listened to my gut instinct and stepped away from any sort of leauge play.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night ! :groucho:

All I know about this League crap is that the APA state tournament was at Billiard Palace this last weekend and the place was PACKED! More packed then I have ever seen it, but you know what? NOT ONE DAMN PERSON WANTED TO GAMBLE OR PLAY SOME SETS. lame league players...nvm shouldn't even be called players more like lame league bangers!

oh and on a side note I went to the billiard shop in town to get a tip replaced and while I was there, so was some of the apa people in that tournament from out of town looking at cues. This person picks up this players sneaky pete and starts poking in some balls on a 7' demo table and starts saying "omg this must be a sign, i have to get this cue" cause they made like 3 balls in a row LMFAO! I just had to shake my head and walk away saying "wow"

Don't throw M80s or BlockBusters into rotting deer carcasses

Well, not with a .22, but I did "deploy" (threw) a lit BlockBuster inside the ribcage of a decaying deer on the side of a road once. Ran like the dickens until I was about 50 yards away, and waited. And waited. AND WAITED. Well, this particular BlockBuster had a very slow wick, and I got impatient. I started to walk towards the carcass and as I got within 10 yards of it, the BlockBuster exploded, essentially vaporizing the deer carcass. Quite literally, deer carcass was there one second... then BIG BLUE FLASH with deafening BOOM!... and was gone the next. In my "express flight" (air travel) backwards, I got hit with shrapnel of bone and slapped with reams of putrid meat. You don't want to know what this level of "aged" deer meat smelled and tasted like. It stays with you the rest of your life. What we do in our youth!

-Sean

P.S.: For those not familiar with the term, "BlockBuster" is a colloquial term we used to use here in the Northeast to describe any of the family of super-powerful M80 firecrackers. A true BlockBuster measures approximately 1.25 inches in diameter, and about 2 inches long -- almost equal to a quarter stick of dynamite. Yes, highly illegal and will instantly get you a jail sentence unless you have a federal explosives license.

Sorry, not open to the world. Thing is, the leagues at Amsterdam are pretty strong. Strong A+ and Open players you may have not heard of as well as people like Tony Robles, Mika Immonen, Jenn Barretta and other top players in the area.

Yea, but what about the guy selling the cues, he needs to make a living.

Yeah, stupid league players, what do they think they are doing actually keeping a pool hall in business? They all should go home, let you and the big gamblers take over and not bring any business to the place so it has to close it's door in a few months.

Oh and on a side note, I went into a local business the other day that depends on even the smallest sale to stay profitable. The owner was telling me how he was at league night a couple days ago, and saw over 100 league players enjoying themselves playing pool for nothing but fun, spending money on food and booze, and buying new equipment. Except there was this one guy who looked completely miserable, and he kept bothering people to play for money, and didn't spend a dime at the pool hall while he was there, and he realized that this guy couldn't just enjoy the game any more without trying to rob someone. I just had to shake my head and walk away saying "wow".

i dont know how other areas are but we seem to have a lot of serious players in my area. our apa league has 12 divisions playing 7 days a week. we have scotch doubles, double jeapordy, both 8 ball and 9 ball and masters. after i looked at all the rosters and talked to numerous players i would say half play at least 3 nights a week and 1 quarter play at least 5 nights a week . we have some that play in more than one league. our apa has divisions in all the pool halls here and several bars. most of the pool halls are in house and the bars are travel divisions.

we also have a money league here that is mostly travel in bars but shares 2 pool halls with the apa on different nights. myself and 2 others on my apa dj team are also on the same team in the money league.

we have the napa league starting here next month. i have already signed up and the lo put me on his team.

i have noticed that there are some players that have played a long time and will never seem to improve beyond a 3 or 4 s/l but there are a lot more that seem to be serious and want to reach the highest level they can attain.

i am one of the serious ones. i play apa s. d., d. j. and masters. i also play the money league and like i said earlier , just joined the napa league. i also am scheduled to take lessons from randy g in a few weeks.

sorry for the long post, i was just wanting to explain how we have a lot of serious players in my neck of the woods.

by the way it seems like apa is growing in my area. when i joined the s.d. division last summer we had 6 teams sunday night, our new session just started 2 weeks ago and we now have 10 teams. i dont know how many other divisions have grown.

There's probably a lot more than 3 players there you can choose from and still have a lock! : )

The APA has it's drama. I stopped in a very packed hall this weekend to watch some friends play in the APA city finals. This little old lady was playing a friend of mine. She only needed to win two games. He early outed the 8 in one game. She's on the hill. With both players shooting at the 8, she calls and makes a long rail cross over bank shot. If you gave her ten more tries she couldn't do it again. You couldn't get a bigger smile on her face (or mine). I think I can ride this horse for a few years worth of ribbing.

I bet the owner made a big proffit this weekend. The parking lot wasn't big enough. I had to park in the "grassy knoll".
