Mosconi Cup Team USA Named!

I heard that there was rumor floating around the Open that Putnam wasn't going to get the spot but it was just a rumor and I don't know that anyone knew for sure who team USA was going to be for sure. Making an announcement like that without absolute confirmation was in bad taste and unfair to Hatch and all of the MC hopefuls.

Just out of curiosity, who made the announcement?

I could be wrong but I thought I heard Jay Helfert say that Dennis would be there.

Hi, Brian. I'm glad to hear you had a good time at the Open. I miss going and seeing my friends. Maybe next year.

Matchroom put out a press release yesterday, I believe, or maybe I should say AzBilliards published it yesterday: Press Release

Hi JAM!

We missed you guys, too! It was a good time again this year. Hope to see you soon!

We do not get to vote like before for one of the guys to be on the team?

I'm glad they aren't doing that again this year. Most of the players never post on here but were all over the place begging for votes and people on here were arguing about who everyone should vote for. I didn't care for the atmosphere it created on here and I like the idea of each player earning their spot by their playing ability as opposed to a popularity contest.

... the team selected to represent America at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Shane Van Boening, Shawn Putnam, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris...

With respect to Rodney, it's too bad Earl didn't make the team instead...

Could've booked them all in the same suite at the MGM, and let the cameras roll...

I don't understand how Team Europe was chosen. It is hard to believe that Mika will not be on the team. See should also be on the team.

See comes 6th on the MC race due to lack of consistency on the Euro tour ranking events. He was only ranked #31 after the last tournament counting in the race...

Mika had a bad year regarding the last 3 or 5 years. THIS year, many players desserved being in the MC team more than him.

EDIT: To make it fair Matchroom should have taken the first 4 of their ranking and keep a wildcard for a major finish. Then See would have been picked for his 10 ball World title.
Also, I find it wrong to have the World pool masters counting in the ranking as it is an invitational event.

Brian, I thought he would be picked for the team based on his performance at the Open and how well he was received at the previous two Mosconi Cups. Dennis was the heart and soul of Team USA the last two years. Matchroom played it safe this year by just taking the top five in each of the rankings. There were no wild card picks like in previous years.

I remember when the Mosconi teams had six players and not five. They cut back a few years ago. That may have been a matter of economics as much as anything else. Either way the teams are very evenly matched this year and it promises to be another great Mosconi Cup. I'm looking forward to it.

Congrats to the winners! No disrespect to any of them, but I would have loved to see Dennis back on the team. His passion in that event is unmatched and it makes me proud for him to represent team USA. Next year Hatchetman!

Quick question: how does the seating at the Mosconi cup work? My buddy already purchased the 4 day pass for the both of us, but it didn't have any section information. So is it first come first served? Is there a US section and a European section? can I bring my bottle of Jack to the stands? :)

I believe it is first come, first served. So people with tickets line up early to be first in the door. That said there is no bad seat in the house.

2011 US Mosconi Cup Rankings Latest

Top Five set for Vegas Show-down

WITH The 2011 partyPoker.net Mosconi Cup set to kick off at 11am on Thursday 8th December, the team selected to represent America at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Shane Van Boening, Shawn Putnam, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris.

These five have finished at the top of Matchroom Sport ranking system that comprised ten events across the USA over a 12 month period. With a total of 26 appearances in the transatlantic tussle between them, there is plenty of experience on hand, with Mike Dechaine being the sole debutant.

Following a career best finish at the weekend$B!G(Bs US Open in Chesapeake, Shawn Putnam, who was a member of the winning side in 2005, crashed the top three to guarantee an automatic spot. He ultimately displaced Johnny Archer, but the Scorpion and Rodney Morris garnered sufficiently high finishes at the Open to maintain their top five positions and hold off Dennis Hatch, who narrowly missed out.

With the top three in the ranking assured their spots, Matchroom Sport decided to go with the top five after an epic year-long battle among the top players in the USA, and named Morris and Archer as the wild cards. The team will now attempt to win back pool most prestigious team trophy after defeat in London last December.

The US Mosconi Cup Ranking consisted of 10 events throughout the United States, and culminated in the US Open. Points were allocated as per the BCA Points List and each event was weighted depending on total purse, size of field and number of top-ranked players competing.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event were allocated points and players were allowed to drop their worst finish of the ten event series. At the conclusion, after the 2011 US Open, the top three players were automatically granted entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The Final Ranking

1. Shane Van Boening 673
2. Shawn Putnam 591.5
3. Mike Dechaine 541.5
4. Johnny Archer 520.5
5. Rodney Morris 479.5
6. Dennis Hatch 469
7. Corey Deuel 406.5
8. Charlie Williams 379
9. Mike Davis 368.5
10. Earl Strickland 367
11. Hunter Lombardo 354.5
12. Stevie Moore 315.5
13. Oscar Dominguez 297.5
14. Jeremy Sossei 250.5
15. Robb Saez 239

Pretty cool line up.

My wife and I were talking about it over dinner and she wants to go. I really don't know why, but we've been several times. For some unknown reason, she loves the Mosconi Cup and always wants to go. For me, the MC is pretty cool but not mandatory -- but anyways, I always try and do something for her. Maybe one of my most memorable MCs was back in 2003, just for one brief song:

(insert flashback music)

We were there for the Friday and Saturday sessions, but at the conclusion of Saturdays games we had to scoot off to change and make dinner at the Bellagio and then on to make it in time to see Shania Twain at Mandalay Bay.

Me, I'm not such a big C&W fan, but if the missus can sit through two days of Mosconi Cup, then I can most certainly sit through a C&W show.

Of course, Shania ain't exactly tough on the eyes and, in all honesty, she put on a pretty good concert. Actually, to be even more frank, though the pool was grand, the highlight of the trip was when Shania started singing "Forever and For Always" and my wife took my arm and put her head on my shoulder.

I guess I like the Mosconi Cup too.

Tell you one thing, I'd rather watch Shania Twain play pool than see Shawn Putnam sing.

LOL!

I was telling my wife tonight the USA team line up and said something about Shawn "The Love Sponge" Putnam and she asks, "Why?" And I had to admitted "I have no f-kin' clue."

I just booked my tickets.

For those who don't want to pay $157/night at the MGM Grand (the lowest rate I could find for four nights, including tax), nearby are the Tropicana, Hooters, and Motel 6, all within easy walking distance. Hooters seems to be the cheapest but you may want to check out the on-line reviews. I've stayed at the Motel 6 before, and it's OK. A mile away (on the monorail) is the Imperial Palace which is the Siamese twin of Harrah's -- about $45 a night.

you can always stay at the extended stay, only a mile or so from the MGM.

Its about 55 a night and you get a full kitchen to go with it.

Top 5 guys in ranking points got the spots. IMO that is 100% fair and the way to go. Maybe it will make some of the players who only play "some" of the ranking events make a little more effort to get out there and play and thus make the fields better in those events.

Not a huge fan of Putnam because of his antics and attitude at times but he got second in points and got second at the US-Open and for him not to make the team would have been robbery. Morris not long ago drilled Alex in the final of a fairly major tournament to win it. Archer had another steady year of underachieving for his talent level and still got into the top 5, SVB wsa a shoe in and is clearly not only the best player in the USA but the most committed to playing professional pool on the gloabl stage. Dechaine did everything he needed to do to deserve this shot.

I can thing of noone on this team that does not deserve to be there, they ARE the top 5 guys in the ranking events, no politics needed, they all earned it more then anyone else.

i'm reminded of a line in the movie Hoosiers,"this is your team"!
