I hope this isn't true Mosconi Cup

Charlie Williams as Captain of the Mosconi Cup? Please, God, NO! This is horrible.

The theory behind choosing Charlie, if I can call it a "theory," would be that Rodney and Johnny and Charlie have similar interests as far as pool go, so they will make a concerted effort to work together.

I will be sorely disappointed if I see Charlie Williams as the captain. In fact, it will ruin the entire Mosconi Cup for me if this happens. It just doesn't seem fair that money and politics seem to control pool in the United States over what's fair and just. It's just wrong in every aspect.

I needed that on this Friday. Work is brutal this week for me. :embarrassed2:

So brutal you didn't realize it's only Thursday :embarrassed2:

Charlie Williams is terrible for pool... (to stay on topic). He's only ever involved in anything for money or other personal gain.

OMG, I need to get out more. I'm stuck in this cockpit just about 24/7, and it's wearing me down. I only got 3 hours sleep last night due to work deliverables. :frown:

Thanks for the heads-up. I can take a break and go to Starbucks now. Whew! I thought my deadline was today.

Yippeeeeee!:happydance::happydance::happydance:

Not sure who it will be - but I think it should be an American. I agree that Nick Varner seems to be a good captain and surely has all the tools to do a good job.

And he has always pushed pool in the US with a high degree of integrity.

Who ever Matchroom chooses should be someone who really represents the US. (maybe they should pick Earl Strickland - that would really electrify the crowd and the teams! No one is more American than Earl!)

Btw, as a separate (but related) question, is it Europe against north America or just the US? In other words, could a Canadian be on the US team?

Ater all, I think Europe has something like 38 countries in it.

Mark Griffin

Varner should be considered but he's from Kentucky. Not sure where Kentucky is but I've heard of it

Seriously, while Nick WOULD be a great choice for captain I think Earl would be even better. Outspoken personality and character - he'd be a draw for sure ... I can hear his high pitched voice already ...

Go USA!

You said it all, Billy, and I concur!

Johan Ruysink, the European non playing captain/coach is well known as a disciplinarian and gets respect from his players despite not being a top level player himself.
Someone who fits into this mould for the USA is JOEYA.
He is an ex US marine with a copious knowledge of the game and would be a good motivator for the players - a US Johan.

Just thinking outside the box! Vote for Joey Aguzin.

Interesting strategy, one I can live with. Plus, everybody likes JoeyA. It would be cool to see him there.

I have pretty good idea how the disciplinarian thing would go over with the American squad.

JoeyA: "OK guys you need to pay attention to what I'm saying..........."

Johnny: "I gotta go meet Fatboy"

Rodney "Later bro...."

Putnam: "I'm goin with Johnny"

Dechaine: "Can I get a bigger hat?"

Shane: "You can't beat me."

I like the idea of Earl as non-playing captain, too. Maybe he won't blow up if he's not playing, but he will make it interesting for sure. But as Lee mentioned something about a coach being captain, how about Stan Shuffet? He had a great finish in this years US Open and may be a great strategist.

There may be other teachers/coaches that would do a great job that post on AZB regularly, but because of Stan's strong finish in the Open he came to mind.

USA, USA, USA!

Hilarious. I would vote for Earl and Hatch together for motivation, enthusiasm, and irrationality. Could you imagine, there might be a brawl on the sidelines about which player to play.

Wow, I just laughed out loud when you finished with the last one :p Thanks for the laugh!

A great line in the movie yesterday, Rum Diaries, CW knows the cost, but ''not the value''. Soooooooooo true.

As we all know they have not yet announced the non playing captains for the MC. I have heard from two different places that Charlie Williams has been pushing to get the position and that he is probably going to get it this year.
There is something not right about this if it is indeed true. First off, CW is Korean and seems to represent the USA or Korea depending on his mood I guess. His name is Korean Dragon, not USA Dragon. Secondly He is in my opinion NOT qualified to be the non Playing captain for the USA team. There are I am sure plenty of qualified people out there that could fill this spot better than CW. Nick Varner is the elder statesman of the USA Team withall the qualifications you would want for that position. I am sure all can come up with a reasonable replacement for Nick if needed but CW is not even close in my opinion.
Now again, I have heard this twice now and I can't say that it is 100% gonna happen. But once the decision is made Matchroom will NOT change it because people complain, it's their event and they can and will do as they like with it and IMO rightly so. I do think though that if enough people object to this "Potential" decision they may change their mind before it gets into the public eye.
So in closing post in this thread who you think should be the non playing captain and why. If you feel so inclined please post why CW should not be captain just in case thats the direction it is going. These sources are good ones and reliable, not just a guy I met at the bar on league night who thinks it might happen.
Finally, GO U.S.A This Year is ours.

I think a CW selection would be too polarizing, for many reasons.

So, sittin' here sippin' an espresso and thinking back to the MCs I've attended and the general atmosphere of mayhem that surrounds them, I mentally ran through a list of pro players and one name popped up that I'm thinking would be a most excellent captain: Buddy Hall.

LMAO. This post made my day. Johnnyt

I hate to say it, but the players probably feel they can collectively coach themselves, and would likely pick a close friend who is in need of a payday.

If there is indeed a coaching job up for grabs, then consider this. Credentials and playing ability are secondary to the ability to effectively coach a team. Someone who possesses strong leadership skills and is a clever strategist, may in fact be a better candidate then an accomplished senior player. As such, a compromise between the two extremes could be the best option. A little character and charisma wouldn't hurt either, given that Mosconi Cup is primarily an entertainment based event. :)

Bingo! All good points Nathan. :thumbup2:

I'd LOVE to see either HOPKINS or SIGEL be the non-playing captain.

How much fun would that be? I'm not knocking Varner, but his personality is as flat as a sheet of glass. You couldn't get a rise out of that guy if he just won the lottery and had the swedish bikini team begging him to fill their belly buttons with vodka to do naked body shots.

Hopkins, Sigel or Earl----- all bring knowledge, conviction and EXCITEMENT.
