My Thoughts on Earl and TAR 22

I've always felt that Earl was just a walking pile of sh*t anyway. It's hard to find more satisfaction than watching assholes lose. After all of these years I don't know why he's invited to ANY tournaments or events. I didn't get a chance to watch this TAR match because of work, and I'm upset about it. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than watching an asshole LOSE and watching him meltdown and explode while doing it.

I'm just a little sick I guess, but I'd get satisfaction beating him anytime I got the chance if I were Shane.

Justin,

Last night was one of the best streamed matches ever. There wasn't one guy (Shane included) who thought Earl wouldn't meltdown....and he didn't disappoint.

You put on a helluva show and it was great to the very end.

Earl is crazy. It is what it is. Getting involved with him is like having sex with a gorilla----- you're done when HE'S done. Alas, many (including myself) find it entertaining and I'm sure Shane understands this as he took the match knowing Earl wasn't going to be easy.

It's like having that one bipolar family member and it's your turn to host Thanksgiving dinner. You always hope they'll be normal and fine but it never is --- they always end up being the Turkey and people leave before the pie is served. You can't fix crazy.

I'm not embarrassed to say I'm an Earl fan because I saw shots last night that no one else is pulling off. He's nuts, but I accept he's nuts instead of hoping he shows up sane (which is a pipe dream).

I think at one point last night Earl won about 6 games in the course of about 6 minutes and Shane got RATTLED. Then, Earl's feelings got hurt over something and then the "quit-stroke" ensued. Sad.

Earl should prob quit/retire or we (as a community) should accept he's certifiable. I don't think it's an attitude prob -- he's legit sick and mentally ill. LEGIT. I accept him because he doesn't hurt anyone but himself.

Anyways.... great job last night. Also, a big thanks to Chris Kurzweil for sponsoring the show last night. Watching the show made me hungry for some smoked pork chops and jalapeno brats.

I get where you are coming from. My biggest issue is the treatment of people in the studio. I put this together and said "Pay me money to come watch a match and enjoy yourself." People did just that based on either past experience with TAR or reputation. Now I have customers out there that when asked "How was the TAR match in the TAR Studio?" They will be 100% correct in saying it was uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I was completely fine with everything up to the point of insulting paying customers. Earl wants to bounce the cueball on the table like a five year old with a new superball I don't care. If he breaks it we'll get another one. If he wants to throw his cue through the front window...cool...make a great YouTube video. As much as the sharking pissed me off personally Shane knew what he was getting into and if he wanted to could tell Earl to sit down and shut up.

But when he turns to a nice guy who flew in from another country to watch this match and says "You are a fvcking idiot." that cuts it with me. I wasn't aware of some the things he was saying to the people in the studio until after the match was over. These people and the ones who purchase our streams are whats keeping pro pool alive in this country. They are the ones who go to the tournaments, buy Accu-Stats dvd's, support local and national events with their time and money. There are damn few of them out there and they deserve at the very least the common courtesy of a basic level of respect from the people who they are providing an income to.

I knew Earl would be Earl but I honestly thought he would keep it contained to the match. Talk to the crowd? Fine its what he does. Insult the crowd? Not on my dime.

We couldn't really hear what he was saying on the stream, but you're correct. There's no excuse for that - other than he's mentally ill.

The silver lining to the cloud is that there was NO ONE in the TAR studio who didn't know who Earl Strickland was. That said, every single person who paid to show up (at least in the back of their mind) knew there was a SLIGHT chance they'd become part of conflict, somehow.

If I was the guy from England who just got off a 10 hour flight to Vegas to watch the match, I'd be pumping my fist in the parking lot because Earl called me an asshole. That's like John McEnroe bashing his gatorade in my direction or Gallagher showering me with watermelon pieces. It's almost the whole point (assuming you went with the sole purpose of watching Earl play).

Otherwise, it's like going to see Gallagher and wearing a rain suit. It's not the same experience.

If that would have been me he said that to, and he had absolutely NO reason to say it, I would have went to jail that night and Earl would've went to the HOSPITAL (not a mental hospital either). Seriously!!!

FWIW, if someone ever brings a lawsuit against Earl for something like this, it would tickle the sh*t out of me.

Maniac (had best not ever sit in the audience of another one of Earl's matches)

Are you serious??? It is now acceptable to be slandered in front of other people? And.....you're supposed to feel HONORED that it happened? Wow!!!

Keep your head up pal. You got 4 days til you're back on your grind with TWO respectful people playing. You won't have to worry about that with Raj and Oscar. Keep doing what you're doing.

I guess we differ on the point of view that anyone who pays to see Earl play should expect to be insulted. After this second prolonged period with Earl I do believe you are correct in that he can't control himself.

Never, ever apologize for what you do for pool Justin. We all hope that the dark side of Earl doesn't rear it's ugly head every time he plays... and we are always disappointed. It's sad, but it is very hard not to pull for Earl and hope he can pull himself together... but he can't. I don't believe he can help it himself, he needs some serious professional help.

With all that said... this weekend's match was worth every penny. I thought Mark and Ken's commentary was excellent and the insight they shared on the state of pool and what they are trying to do for pool was very interesting and entertaining. Having Rogan in the booth on Friday was a bonus.

Keep doing what you do... you guys are the leading edge of pool. I am very appreciative of your efforts!

Sincerely,
Jamie

Really?

"We put this match together based on the reaction to the 10 foot table match...." first sentence of the post. So now that the numbers stink the concern is image of the game and respect of the audience.

Would this be the same post if the numbers were off the charts?

Calling someone a name is not slander. I'm not defending Earl's actions --- please don't take it that way. I'm working this from the other side of the equation---- trying to get everyone to see that Earl is mentally ill and to be more understanding.

I have a bipolar person in my family, so I'm more sensitive to the reality of the situation. The same way a tourettes person can't help ticks and outbursts, Earl can't control his behavior (without medication, as he apparently doesn't take). That's a fact, people.

So, while people are marching up the hill with pitch forks and torches, you should probably take a time-out and google bipolar illness and read the wikipedia entry on the topic. It might shed some light on what you're witnessing and make you a hair more sensitive.

I think people look at Earl as if he's a dick -- and although he acts like one, it's not his fault --- and that's the truth of the matter.

That said, it's up to TAR whether or not to be around it in the future.

Integrity is all we got in this world

We put this match together based on the reaction to the 10 foot table match. That was one of our top sellers ever but I swore after that match I would never put myself through that again and so did Shane. But time passing has a way of smoothing the edges and it seemed like an interesting idea for these two to get together again and Shane was down for it.

I thought "If it does similar numbers it could be worth it." Well it didnt and it really wasn't. We spent a lot of money on this match. Thanks to the die hard TAR supporters we didnt go in the tank but when I see people I know have bought everything we have done saying "Not this time" because of one reason I pay attention.

I thought the TAR Studio atmosphere would mitigate some of Earl's antics and compared to what happened in Ohio it did. Day two and three of TAR 22 were still not something I want to be remembered for. Earl is awesome right up until he isn't then it just goes from entertaining and a bit wacky to just plain hateful and mean. I really thought this match would not have that mean edge to it. He was getting a guaranteed payday and all expenses paid with a chance to make a nice score for the weekend if he won. I know he respects Shane. I honestly thought he would do all the wacky shit he always does but without the really nasty tone he displayed in Ohio and the final two days of this match. I was wrong about pretty much everything.

What I feel worst about is the people who paid a serious amount of money to be in the TAR Studio for this match. I apologize to them. Several traveled great distances at substantial cost to be there to see this match. They were not treated with the respect they deserved and that is, in the end, my fault. After the match was over one person walked up to Earl and tried to shake his hand. Earl turned his back on him. The man turned his head and saw I was watching..showing a lot of class he just kind of smiled, shrugged his shoulders and walked out the door. I felt like the biggest asshole in the world because this guy paid to come watch supposedly professional players I put together and this was the last experience he had walking out of our place that we built to represent us. It's unacceptable.

Earl is a tremendous talent and absolutely hilarious. Everyone in that studio this weekend wanted to see him do well. I even think Shane wants him to play great just so he can test himself against one of his idols from childhood. It really hurts me that such a talented and entertaining person can become so hateful and disrespectful towards people who wish him nothing but the best. I admit I probably rationalized some of Earl's past behavior because I wanted to see a great match and I wanted to produce a successful event. I gave Earl the benefit of the doubt because I know what he is capable of on the pool table and his drawing power. I did what I think many in the past have done to put pool where it is today: I did the easy thing instead of the hard thing.

People will say "Why didnt you stop the antics or say something?" To that I can only respond that several people ,who know Earl better than me, did say something to him. It had no effect. The reason I didn't say anything to Earl during the match is because if I did he would of probably quit in the middle or I would of gotten mad and threw him out. Maybe thats a cop out, I don't feel good about not standing up for the people in the studio and for Shane who I know was seething inside but wouldn't let it show to Earl. It's something I will think about for a long time. Integrity means a lot to me. Backing up what you believe in with action is important. I believe people should be treated with respect. Customers who pay your salary deserve respect. That didn't happen this weekend and I apologize to everyone who paid their money to watch a match and got a sideshow instead.

It won't ever happen again.

Learning curve....nice write and nice read. Keep up the good work.

Reminds me of Mad Max. ''two men in one man out''.

Fu*# that Justin! You are the absolute last person who needs to apologize. Earl is a grown ass man! Everyone knows NO ONE can control him. Many have tried an many have failed. In a way we are all responsible because we all want to see the ball pocketing run out monster that he is. But that comes with a price. And he always collects his toll.

I totally felt ill when he started his give up routine at the end. The most grotesque display of selfeshness. I hope the poeple at Kurzweil Meats were'nt put off by the meltdown. I'll send them an email pleading not to give up on TAR and may even order some smoked pork chops too!

Thanks to TAR for bringing us high speed pool! I'll be a returning customer.

Nice post....

Don't sweat it Cobbler..... I used to be a big Earl fan. Imo, it takes 3-4 times of really seeing Earl show his true insanity for it to really set in. I seen it years ago and was done with him long before streaming came along. Now, he's worse now..... Dude needs serious professional help.

Keep doing what you do....... It's on the mark 98.6% of the time.

Would this be the same post if the numbers were off the charts?

Yes it would. I was simply being honest in why we put the match together. The first match was stressful as hell in a room I had absolutely no control over. I thought that if we changed the environment, paid Earl a guaranteed fee win or lose, got him staked to a 60/40 (his way) deal that things would go smoother. As I said in the OP I was wrong.

If you expect me to apologize for trying to make money you are barking up the wrong tree. Making profitable matches means everyone gets paid and people get to see something they otherwise wouldn't. It also means I get to stay in business.

Please show me where I said anything about the image of the game. Also please show me where I said the numbers stink. I said customers essentially voted with their wallets on what they think of Earl's antics. I pay attention to what customers say. It was my fault for thinking Earl could be Earl without flipping the switch all the way.

If we had made more money on this match than any other I would still say the same thing. I do this because I love it and I get to do cool shit with some cool people. I accept that I'll probably end up with less than what I started with. That allows me a certain freedom to do and say what I really think. If all I cared about was the bottom line I would be far far far away from doing anything with professional pool.

Justin,u and Tar r the best, you are a great guy andit shows all the time,EARL is uncontrolable,he cant even control his self,as we all know, you did your job(as allways)putting this all together, and i believe u r rite,if you would of said something to EARL in the middle of the match,he probably would of got pissed and walk out(that would of been the worst thing to happen, atleased the people got to see the entire match played),i hope this is the end for EARL,WITH THESE kind of matches,he just doesnt deserve another chance to mingle with good people, like u say JUSTIN everybody tries to be so nice to EARL,but for some reason EARL thinks we all hate him.SO BIG GUY DONT U FEEL BAD,WE ALL KNOW U DID WHAT U HAD TO DO,TO KEEP THE GAME GOING TO THE END,I THINK YOU DID ANOTHER GREAT JOB JUSTIN!

JCIN

If you think a customer might take some abuse during one of your promotions and you do not want that to happen.A deduction from the base guarantee for insults against paying customers should have been considered when you booked the event with Earl. you are a promoter now and have to think and work accordingly.if you do a show and the possibility of explosion is there, that probability is to be included in the promotion.it is clear that working with Earl you get skill and wack in the same package and it can't be separated.put a show together with Alex and Earl and have fun with it,the promo angles are pretty good.
