Missed the point is an understatement here!
I understand your point, just making one of my own - that this event could quite possibly be considered more important than an actual sanctioned WC, if one is held. Yes, CW is a little footloose and fancy free with the hyperbole, and
perhaps 72nd it is not. On the other hand at least he backed off with using the word "championship" after the word "world".
But really isn't it just a industry-wide phenomenon to some extent? I mean BB's US Open is only that because he owns the trademark to call it that. Same goes for other events. It's not like it is sanctioned as such by some recognized organization like the US Open Golf tournament is run by the USGA.
But there are potential issues with CW's misleading labels. For example, it could be argued I guess, that potential promoters of a WPA sanctioned event might be a little shy to step up if they believe CW's event will hurt the recognition of an actual WC sanctioned event. But again, that is probably more related to CW's use of the word World in his title. But he is not calling it a world championship.
He can't call it the US Open 14.1 Championship because I suppose someone else already owns that name. Don't know for sure but I would imagine CW would jump on that name if it was available. Anyway, how does that tournament currently stack up against this one?
I think this whole thing touches on part of the problem with pro pool in the US and the lack of a recognized sanctioning body. What would a governing body in the US call it's major championships? All the good names are already taken.
I guess because most enthusiasts recognize that this event is the biggest straight pool event of the year (certainly in the US) they are inclined not to get so wrapped up in the fact that CW goes a little overboard in his promoting of it.
It's just a name. And as Shakespeare said, "What's in a name?" Frankly, considering the fact that the only people who even get wind of this event are us hardcores, is anyone really being misled? It is what it is.
