Am I wrong to be pissed?

Hell, I'll hold the light for you all day long. If my opponent is jacked up over a ball out on the table where he's hitting the light, that is exactly the kind of shot I want to encourage him to go for. I will be the first one to say excellent shot sir.

This might be a shock, but I've also played in bars with stupidly installed lights. The thought to move it never entered my mind ever....it's heresy. If I can't jack-up, neither can my opponent. So, you either choose to play the right way and neither player move it (don't jack up) or you go down a path of constantly moving it at-will, which is really stupid. That's why a champion like Brumback knew the right answer. It's hillbilly bar-pool. If, by chance, you're in a hillbilly bar league, at least try not to play hillbilly pool. Otherwise, don't play fouls and make sure you give yourself 1 butt's width off the rail if the CB freezes to it. All the same thing, imo.

Any real player would think light swinging is goofy.

Sorry but just because Brumback says something doesn't make it gospel. I respect his game deeply, however you are both dead wrong. This is one of the many reasons why pool gets such a bad rap... Too many people who misunderstand good sportsmanship or simply don't have any. Should the refs not wipe up sweat or spills on a basketball court? Your logic regarding hillbilly pool is quite frankly.. Hillbilly!

Sorry...had to channel my inner Chris Banks on the post....

Honestly I don't think this is the end of the world here. Over reactions happen. I was serious about trying to keep pool a gentleman's game though. I am the type of guy that will tell you that you are shooting the wrong ball in 9 ball ball (like the 5 when the 4 is still on the table). Is it my job to do that or is it your job to pay attention to what ball you are on??..it doesn't matter to me as I don't want to win on a technicality. I want to beat you. This example of moving the light to help out is not bad at all. Some people are nice and do it, others do not...doesn't make them bad people either to each their own.

Don't be sorry, it cracked me up. I loved that movie!

lol@light fixture is part of the table.
If it's recessed lighting in the ceiling do you say "See that light bulb up there?
That's actually a piece of pool table"?

Serious players would never do it? Hillybilly pool? Then why is it written directly into the WPA rules?
Are those considered banger/bar rules?

ACTUAL serious players expect adequate equipment and room to play.
They don't tolerate shooting around obstacles and changing their choice of shot based on the furniture.
It's fine for your cue to smack an obstacle on the backswing if you're playing at hard times with buddies.
It's not ok for serious pool.

I thought pool was gentlemans game.
Cocaine is one hell of a drug.
I love lamp.

I'd like to nominate this post, for post of the year.

Three, count'em 1, 2, 3, all time great "lines" that some how all fit this thread. Kudos spimp, kudos.

I agree, would've held light for my opponent.

I do not understand why people say if it was a serious game, high stakes or US open it would be different. How is this different for a friendly game you play with your buddy? do you not follow the rules if its friendly or a gambling match? do you not have sportsmanship if its for funsies or a serious match? How could it possibly be different? I cant rap my head around that logic.

Coz one matters and the other doesnt?

Did he make the shot?

Not that it matters, just wondered. It sounds like you may have used this as an excuse to lose with your temper. I've seen and heard it all on post match excuses. Thanks for a new one!

How many times have you hit your head on the light ? All bar tables have hazards. Some tables are too close to the wall or a post. Some are too close to where the drunks gather.
Access Adapt and Overcome.

Thought I'd heard every excuse for losing but that's a new one.

Take a week off from pool and then quit.

Exactly

If someone else mentioned this I agree but in case no one has

The time to complain was before the shot. I'm gesan you would have posted nuttin if he missed or if you had won.

Wow, this thread went to the races in a hurry.

I guess at this point I'll just add...... "Yeah".

:)

I don't think he's a clown. Moving lights is goofy. Must be a bar league thing....of which I'm not familiar.

Flipping out and losing a match must be a pro thing then....?

Much better to flip out and lose a match then to do something goofy like move a light. Definitely the way to go. Thanks for the perspective.

.

Apparently the WPA disagrees with you.....

The chairs and tables in the room are there when you both start. Would you disagree if someone moved one of them?

Not sure how one can surmise that the light is part of the table....

Don't forget the cubes of chalk actually ON the table.

DON'T TOUCH EM !!

... The thought to move it never entered my mind ever...

^^^^ This ^^^^

I've played at some real doozies when it comes to bar pool, and I've never asked for the light to be moved or held aside while I took my shot. And I'm the guy tall enough to whack the shiznit outta my head when I stand up from my shot :frown: :o

In the interest of full disclosure, I've moved chairs and such. Maybe a bar stool or something similar. Never thought about moving a (dining) table, an ATM machine, or a light.

But the thought of repositioning the light has never crossed my mind

I've always considered the light as being... well... "non-movable" (if that's a word) ? Much like that one wall that always gets in the way , or the jukebox that happens to be four inches too close to the table when I end up on the rail

It might have bothered me (and maybe the OP can clarify) if my teammate were the one to say, unprovoked, "Hey, you want me to hold that for ya ?"

Of course, if the shooter was female :D, then there's no issue, hold the light, of course

Hey, that's just me...

playing league

on many bar boxes with low hanging lights i have used my head or shoulder to move the light and get to a shot. never been questioned about the legality, but what you did was let this get into your head, and thats why you lost the match. you have to remember you are not playing the other guy, you are playing the balls, when its your shot you have to get out, you did not do this as you were think about *****ing about some small thing that upset you.
we all want to win, but leagues are for fun, get over it, get on with your life.

I was never smart enough to ask for help

Exactly, I'm mad at myself because I would of never thought to have someone else move the light.
All of those masse shots I never took...
It was brilliant to have the other team hold the light instead of his own teammate or a referee.
The guy must of been a stone cold hustler to think of that move.
Referee or not, I wouldn't want any part of that guy.
