Mark Wilson To Change Face of Mosconi Cup

An excellent interview with Mark Wilson.

Encouraging. Disciplined. Team oriented. Emphasis on core values.

Makes me absolutely look forward to the coming Cup action.

What a stellar choice in Mark Wilson........

" a much younger team"

Well SVB has to be in there. But after that...who is he talking about that is "much younger"?

Lets get the speculation started. :D

I think he might be talking about someone like Justin Bergman.

Put Dennis Hatch with guys who gel like in 2009 with that positive team spirit, and you will have a winning team!! I am not sure putting a bunch of inexperience together is the answer, but I'm glad to see they are working on something.

I wondered a bit about Landon, if he would be someone that Mark would consider. He handled Earl with ease at Tunica winning 15-4 playing 10 ball on a 10 foot diamond. Even with Earl behaving poorly Landon didn't let it get to him.
Is he Mosconi cup ready, I don't know. But I know this, the kid impresses the heck out of me every time I see him shoot.

Mark currently coaches Landon as part of the Lindenwood University billiards team. I think it's unlikely he chooses Landon because (1) as much promise as Landon has, he hasn't posted any major tournament wins yet, and (2) the appearance of favortism.

IMO the only shoo-in is SVB, and the only shoo-out (as it were) is Earl based on Mark's "behavior" comments.

Dennis Hatch is a disgrace to the Mosconi Cup, just like Earl

All that rawr rawr rhee B.S. then he cant execute a ball in hand shot. Please.

My thinking is that SVB will be the only returning member to the team this year...and rightly so, imo!!!

Some good candidates: Justin Hall, Landon Shuffet, and Hunter Lombardo. Justin Bergman would be a fine consideration. Maybe a Joey Gray or a Chip Compton would be a good choice.

Just find the best 5 guys that will not get rattled under the intense pressure they are going to feel....that's the best formula for success!!!

Your just a complete a$&hole to make a statement like that Dennis hatch has more heart an passion for the game then 99% of the players that play this game. Sure he made a couple mistakes but if I recall so didn't SVB an every other player on the Mosconi Cup. Just another person that blast someone and has no clue what it's like being on big stage like these players were.

I hope Mark has tryouts for the team and does NOT base the roster on tournament finishes.

I think that the team should be built out of those who can prove themselves to be part of a team AND who can play world class pool. Landon could easily be a member of the Mosconi cup team. He is more than capable of playing world class pool with composure and beating any other player in the world in a race to five.

I hope he gets his shot through a tryout based system and if so I hope he makes the team.

Did anyone that read the interview actually comprehend it? Some of you need to go back and re-read it or actually take the time to read it for the first time cause it is obvious you have not.

Let me help you out and review. Mark doesn't care if you are the Ocean State defending champion. Anyone remember that. Mark cares if you have character and dedication to pool and to the team. Many of the players that some of you are listing - do they fit the criteria?

Landon is in school and school comes first. I hope he finds the time for both school and more pool in his life cause he certainly has the talent and his father raised him right.

Watchez is the teacher.

I agree with you! I don't think people read the interview. Anyway, I'm fairly confident that he was talking about dechaine when he made that comment about the ocean state, but one person I think can do a great job for the cup would be a past ocean state winner, shorty! I think his attitude is awesome and he definitely has the work ethic!

I know some will disagree with me about shorty and the work ethic, but I think if he is asked to possibly play for the cup, he will put the time in!

Just maybe Mark might take Dechaine under his wing and shape and mold him. We all know he can shoot its the mental game that gets him most of the time. I would love to see a sharp shooting, mentally tough and respectful Dechaine. I still think he can be a world champ someday. Also the article sounded more like I don't care what you have won show me you have the qualities I seek in my players. Sounds like he might be willing to give him an opportunity. Maybe also that kid Sergio Rivas in 10 months he could make him quite the player.

Interesting prediction, Darren. I must admit that these are all solid, well-respected players.

This team would certainly be a young, talented one and Shane would, I believe, be the oldest member of the team. Who knows who will make the grade and make the team, but we can be sure of two things: 1) Mark will make great choices, and 2) as you suggest, Shane must be the leader and role model for whatever team Mark puts together.

It looks like an interesting year ahead.

its the way to go pal all good guys and hungry.. young fresh and no battle scars and gives them even more reason to work hard ... hope to see you in blackpool..

Great article, but I'm unclear on the whole premise that Mark gets to pick all the players. Can someone post a link to the reference where Matchroom has stated the Captains will be choosing their teams for next year? I hadn't heard that. That's certainly not how it's been lately and would be a welcome change. This past team, picked entirely by Matchroom, was doomed from the get go imho.
