BREAKING NEWS: 8/28 Wed 9am, Archer on Today Show with Brooke Shields and Al Roker

Johnny was in the booth for the Earl vs Kiamco match (Earl won hill hill, plays Shaw at 2 pm on the B side, and winner gets undefeated Shane). Anyway, he said that Hatch was also going to be on the Today Show! And that he's taking two shots, not one. And said a few things @ BB, ABP, AZB, etc. Interesting stuff... Thanks for sharing Johnny.

Didn't he also say that the whole today show segment on pool is 90 seconds or something??

Yay! Hatch will look *great* on TV. This will be cool!

Thanks for sharing these tidbits about the show. It gives us all something to look forward to -- well, those of us who enjoy this kind of thing, at any rate. :)

If this is the case, I think there's much overhype on what's going to happen. I'll watch, but tempering my enthusiasm on much discussion about Mosconi Cup or anything else big happening in the game.

He must make the shot.

Making a VERY DIFFICULT SHOT might please some of us but I think he needs to stick with a JUMP SHOT (which he is VERY GOOD AT) COMBINED with either a Carom or a Combination. Johnny can wince that he doesn't have a shot and that he is in a difficult situation since he must hit such and such ball first and that he thinks he MIGHT be able to make such and such ball.

The other one that I think looks pretty cool is the 8 ball close to the corner pocket but frozen and impeded by an object ball closer to the pocket than the eight. It's not a super difficult shot and since people know 8 ball, that might be a good one to do.

IMO the easiest way to impress the masses, is with 'wing shots' !...They are gimmes, and I'm sure John knows them...Don't try tough shots like "Fats" always did !..I don't think he ever made a trick shot in his life !..;)

Overhype is a understatement although its good to see some pool love it will have little to no effect on the game , However if he were to get in Nick maybe with Robin Dobson's boy from Jake and Josh who is a heart throb talking about the game and his mother that could have a big impact on the kids that might jump start the next generation

The young fans are the teacher

I saw that too. He had Hatch lie on one end of the pool table and then Johnny jumped the cue ball over him to pocket the ball on the opposite corner of the table. Perhaps this is the trick shot we'll see on the Today show.

While pool needs all the publicity that it can get, it is kind of disappointing that trick shots on tv is the best that we can do.

Hi Dick,

Wing Shots can be tricky. I shoot them almost every time I practice. Not long, just maybe ten shots or so.

Sometimes I make them two or three times in a row. Sometimes I miss two or three times in a row. I know Johnny is a lot better than me, but I don't think he wants to risk that shot, imo.

Ain't that the truth ..... Archer says he has a minute and a half time slot. Either way, that isn't gonna change pool much I'm afraid. Everyone knows pool exists and trick shots exist, so seeing it again may not have the impact on the game he is hoping for.

If the pro players and associations really want to kick start pool's popularity again it needs, pro players in malls, casinos, with tables set up, all across the country. Posters around the table and prizes being offered to beat the pro playing the game all novices know....... 8 Ball.

This kind of exposure is relatively inexpensive, will DEFINITELY get media exposure as well as spectating exposure, not to mention people stepping up to actually play a game.

edit .. with this foundation ... some well dressed male and female pros signing photos and personalizing themselves with the folks watching .... that's the ticket.

All the companies involved with pool like cue mfgs., table mfgs., cloth, chalk ..... and on and on should spend money on this exposure and advertising. They won't though, because they are penny wise and pound foolish.

Eventually this kind of thing can evolve to tv game shows and on location live broadcasts.

On stream JA said that The Today Show had called him. Melanie fielded the call apparently. So she called Johnny saying The Today Show wants you to call. Johnny says he replied to Mel "What the heck do they want with ME?" lol

They are doing a segment with 3 sports/games. JA said their approach is to re-shape the image of these 3 sports - 3 that are poorly perceived by the general public. Ex. Pool is a smokey hustler's game... He did not reveal the other 2 sports/games. Darts maybe? Golden Tee? lol

It is the producer's intent to change the image by having them perceived as "social games". So to get the family out and enjoy these wonderful games. JA said the producer is a pool enthusiast.

Please pass the word! Facebook, Twitter, smoke signals, whatever!

I've been sharing it everywhere & my poor friends are probably tired of me talking about it lol

If the intent is to reshape the image of pool, then performing circus trick shots isn't the way to do it.

IMO, it would have been better for Johnny to demonstrate how "easy" it is to break and run a rack of 9-ball.

I would think duck pin bowling might be on that list it's all but gone , the biggest problem is the venues other than Dave n Busters I can't think if too many pool places I would be bringing my family to

Agreed, but it would have to be 8 ball. Very few people outside of the pool world understand or care to understand 9 ball.

Dwarf Tossing is another sport that needs to be seen in a better light.

Maybe after its resurgence, it might be a better business financially than opening a pool hall. Rent A Midget. Great for your kids Birthday Party, Stags, 4th of July Celebrations etc.

Maybe a pool hall with Dwarf Tossing in the back room. Take your frustrations out after getting put on the one loss side.
