Challenge matches from Galveston

My take on this, after I just watched parts of the review.

I tried to stay awake for this comedy, and luckily I fell asleep. If I were awake, I would probably try to cancel my bets on this match, but I can understand those who would not want that. No problem at all.

As far as I know, these challenge-matches was also on the website to the partner of Galveston World Classic, www.betus.com. This means that the public had a chance to bet on the outcome of this match, not just us who had sidebets here on the forum.

I felt that these two players were spitting in the face of the promotors (Taylor Road) and their businesspartners (www.betus.com) who expected a real one-pocket match between two of the best 1-pocket players in the world, and they acted disrespectful to the 1000+ online-fans, and to those who watched the match at the venue.

If pool-players wants to be treated as professionals, then they sure need to act like professionals. This was just pure stupidity.

I have lost $ 3,300 on two big challenge matches this year, and paid off without being mad or anything, but the $ 150 I lost on this comic-show actually made me angry. I've paid off the bets, btw, I am not angry on the guys I bet with. I am angry at Gabe and Scott.

I remember Gabe Owen starting a thread here about a year ago, looking for sponsors.

About 1 month ago I was part of the group who sponsored Max Eberle to the World 14-1 Championship. I can promise that I will NEVER do the same to any of these two players, after their performance last night.

I pretty much agree with JohnnyT, I will not buy or support any PPV that these two players happens to be involved in.

I lost all respect that I had for these two.

I've lost $15k before and not been mad like this...this $90 I lost on this infuriates me. They spit in our faces on this one big time. Maybe it was karma because I chipped up on Scott the whole weekend he was playing SVB and others. The universe hates me some days.

Ok, so we're even.

I bet $ 6,37 that Efren will win the lag against Cliff, and another $ 4,76 that the 5-ball will be legally pocketed during the first rack.

Bet?

no bet on either of those Roy. Efren has to be a big favorite in the lag against sir hitchalot stroke and if it's gonna be one random ball picked then I want the "will be made" side of it.

Ok.

If you are gonna watch the matches, I'll hunt you for some small action on which balls to be made.

Regardless of how you want to spin it, the participants in the challenge matches are being paid to provide a service. Are you disputing that? I mean, they can't just show up and collect a couple of thousand each. They have to play a challenge match on the tv table. That is work regardless of whether they get a 10-99 or not.

Did they live up to their end of the bargain? Sure, they showed up and played. Would I personally hire them again to do anymore "work" for me. Absolutely not.

I'm quite certain I get overpaid for what I do, but I meet the bottom line every month so apparently someone thinks I do my job well. I wouldn't expect to be retained if I didn't do my job properly.

Maybe they thought they were doing the job adequately, I don't know.

I'm not disputing you comparing it to athletes getting paid appearance money for booster events, etc... But, at those events you'll see the athletes glad handing people, signing autographs, etc...because that is what they are being paid to do. If they go and just sit there I doubt the'll be asked to participate again.

When you have never worked, how do you know how to do something adequately? (and this is not directed at you corvette, just so there is no wrongful implication here).

Anyways - it is nice that people canceled bets but I never gave a thought to cancel mine. If I lost, I would have paid. If I won, I got paid. I am sorry if Roy is upset as we had a bet together but again, I got at minimum a poor effort for my $500 on a previous streamed match and never said a word publicly. I find it naive that people here, since this was an exhibition, are treating this display like a dump but on the other match I have in mind, not one word was mentioned in this forum. I got a few phone calls from people and a few PMs but that was it.

I would hope this wouldn't stop Roy or anyone else from giving me action in the future. If it does, oh well, I got enough action in my life.

Lol if I only could frame it I would.

Id have better fortune playing you some $50 and $100 paper/rock/scissors i think.

Didn't I see someone post that it would only take a few minutes to straighten out the table so that it would not be so difficult to play on? Why didn't they stop the match for a few minutes and talk about the sponsors while they adjusted the table?

TAR probably would have been a good substitute if they didn't swear so much. Perhaps BigTruck would have been a better choice since you don't have to worry about your kids being around watching, since there isn't any swearing in his live streams.

They should have hired that there TAR company to do the live streams and with the improved quality many would have PAID $$ for it.

Also, Frank, our bet is null and void. I don't feel right collecting on that one!!!

Russ.....

what was weird.....

What was weird about the way the table was playing is that it seemed on one shot that the ball rolled toward center table from scott's hole.

Then on gabe's long bank it looked like it rolled to center table from HIS hole?

that just doesnt make sense. the slate would have to be warped for that to happen....

Wow! What an insightful post. I agree 100%! We really don't know the reasons for their performance (because Scott and Gabe have not acted this way before in the past that I know of).

I watched the whole thing.

I saw a bad initial break by Scott and an eight and out by Gabe.

then I saw what looked to me like a friend feeling bad for another friend and him giving him a chance to come back that ended up backfiring.

I saw people that were extremely tired trying to adjust to new conditions, trying things that they would usually have no problems with, that DID look like they were rolling off.

The table was much tighter than they were used to, had either of them played on that table before last night?

I didn't see Gabe warm up on that table at all and it showed with the lag.

With all of that being said, some of the shots they were going for were ridiculous and either showed frustration with the conditions or just a lack of caring.

One thing people have to be aware of is that even the best players don't play the best all of the time. This showed that these two players were human. Many railbirds get it in their heads that top players always play top pool, but that's just not the case.

Did Gabe and Scott play the best they are capable of? Not even close.

What we have to ask ourselves is what were their motivations, were they really trying and the conditions and or mental states of both of them happened to be off, or were they really just not giving a crap?

The answer is that we cant really know their motivations, and I personally, think that since we cant know their motivations, we should in this one instance give them the benefit of the doubt.

ps. Frank, our practice sessions will likely be better than that monstrosity we watched last night. Once I get on my feet again

I have never seen a lot of swearing in the TAR chat and I purchase EVERY ppv. That being said, I can see how it might bother the numerous kids up watching one pocket matches at midnight, lmao.

lack for professionalism

I am not sure if this is the right thread for this, but... it somehow fits:

can please someone explain to me, why the people in charge at galveston are not capable of providing a live coverage in the internet which a fan can satisfyingly follow????? the livescoring is under construction since start. the brackets are pretty up-to-date but where's the 10-ball?, NO RELIABLE SCHEDULE FOR LIVE STREAM MATCHES. How hard can it be, to find out which good matches are ahead and set a timetable for the coming hours?

yesterday for example were soooooo great matches in 8-ball, especially on the loser's side - which I love coz it's do or die. bustamante, svb, reyes, pagulayan - apart from the missing europeans the best players in the world were in action!! and what did they show? allison fisher vs yu ram cha. I admit cha played asome but i saw this live the nite before. It was played over and over and over.... I really dont understand this! the greatest players of all time in one tourney, matching up coz of the unconventional draw :) anyway, great fun for fans around the world to see their stars head up. I stood home all day n nite hoping to see some, coz Im a real addict :) but NO information, only vague assumptions from chat, NO schedule. it really turned me mad knowing that they have streaming capabilties and bloody great matches going on, but WE THE PEOPLE cannot see it. WHY THE HELL??

last week the predator 10-ball in portugal took place. streaming quality was low but steady, the brackets weren't filled in and the streaming schedule was never accurate. they were slightly better than the galveston guys but far away from good. if any of u guys ever followed the eurotour, u know that it can be done professionally. btw, it just takes place in holland but u have to pay for the stream, which i did. I also paied many times for TAR PPV, which i never regreted! they r real pros compared to many others.

Despite its all free, I find a minimum quality standard should be met. a steady stream with descent A/V, up-to-date schedule and live results.

Sorry to complain but I am really pissed off!
Ralph

....and nice greetings from beautiful switzerland :)

the pool was just background noise for the children while they were studying their bible verses.

I saw the table being leveled on more than one occasion this week, just fyi.

This is a very disappointing thread. While I didn't see the match, I am quite surprised by the amount of grief the two players are getting for playing for 4K.

I told a few people yesterday on the chat (when we were all wondering in the afternoon if anything would be streamed at 1pm and then 4pm), that the players AT the event prolly think it was a success but from the stand point of streaming, the fans will prolly think it is an unsuccessful event. It's s shame, too. But I for one am happy for any stream. It was free, and I'm still happy. Yes, the camera and lightning wasn't all that good and yes there were no schedules of the stream posted, but I am still thankful for what I did get to watch this week.

Do I think they can learn - sure, everyone can. Do I wish it was better, sure.

I think the guys who put on the tournament will be surprised how much the complaints from the stream are going to hurt their report of the event. Hind sight is 20-20 and I hope they put more importance on the stream next time.

I just really hate that Gabe and Frost are being kicked down the road so badly. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I this is an opinion forum after all.
