Efren's "Comeback"
Great performance undefeated winning 3-1 over Shannon Daulton with Scott Frost finishing third. Efren is the best ever, nice to see him win this event again.
Many people thought that Efren was over the hill and washed up. We've all seen it before, as athletes age their skills erode, and all that's left is a faded memory of what they once were. It's sad. But Efren is certainly not washed up. He might not play now at the level he once did (he claims he's now about 85%), but even that 85% is remarkable.
I was there, in 1985 I believe, to see this skinny little kid from the Phillipines play some incredible kick shots at Resorts International's Last Call for 9-Ball. His name was either Caesar Morales or Efren Reyes, depending on who you talked to. Weenie Beanie, who was promoting/organizing the event, pointed him out to me and told me to watch him. Efren didn't even have his own cue-- he borrowed one from Rudolfo Luat, his countryman.
As luck would have it, Luther Lassiter, by now 'way past his prime, was playing at the same time on a nearby table. Imagine this: watching one of the greatest legends at the end of his career, while at the same time, seeing the next legend as he emerged from obscurity to world-wide fame.
18 months ago, Efren was invited to play 8-Ball at the Accu-Stats Make-It-Happen 8-Ball Invitational. The ten-foot Diamond table proved too much for the Magician and he was shut out for the Tournament...he lost every match. He missed shots, missed position, and even missed some kicks.
I thought he was finished...washed up.
Boy, was I wrong. Congratulations, Efren, on winning another title. You are the best!
