Do You Enjoy Watching Pros on 4" pockets?

id like to see stevens cloth and bigger pockets like it was before 87 or there abouts.

make players have to shoot! Bob Meucci would be back at the top of his game lol....and Keith would make everyone shudder;)

I enjoy watching the pros playing on 4" pockets. The cream rises to the top with these conditions. I play on them myself and wouldn't want it any other way.

my home table is a 1971 Fisher 8 footer with 4 inch pockets and 3 inch points and deep shelfs makes for a fun game

The "cream" in this case will be mostly the players that play on those gaff tables all year. Johnnyt

Yep, I love watching the pros play on 4" pockets. To me, it adds more drama to the game. I'm glad the days of pros playing on buckets is over.
14.1 is a different story though.

Im with atthecat.. I love watching great players playin on 4 inch pkts.. with the exception of 14.1.. It separates the lil boys from the men...

Gaff tables???

I guess you'd hate to be playing in many of the popular pool rooms in California. There are 4" tables in Hollywood, Santa Monica, Oxnard and Santa Cruz. A couple of those rooms have players tables with 3 7/8" pockets. The people I see on these tables think it's a real challenge to play well on them and, from what I can tell, really enjoy them. Litltle did I know, they were just playing a gaff game.

i kibd if agree...

there were more issues than just the tightness of the pockets going on. We played part of the tournament outside of the tournament room and thoe tables were probably more like how they should all be.

There was also aproblem with the ac so conditions were a little tougher from that. I know for a lot of it i was sweating like mad.

It was hot and humid with extremely tight pockets and blazing fast tables.

4" pockets makes for a better game for all levels of player. "Using the table" on bar bucket pocket tables to make shots that the top pros make is fun but to really improve your game you need to make those shots difficult. As for 9 ball, it's time for the pro game to ditch it and switch completely to 10 ball. Golden breaks and lucky breaks that mean a player doesn't need to think, select the right shot, and worry about getting out of position are a joke. The pros are playing bar pool. The running game should be 10 ball to elevate it to the status of call-shot 8 ball and 14.1 as a game that really tests a player.

Why is 14.1 a different story? I think it would be fun watching high runs of 30 for world class 14.1 players:grin-square:. Oh that's right they don't play 14.1 out there. Johnnyt

It's better than watching break contests. That's what bucket tournaments turn into. You don't see anyone giving up that 10 ball on the tight tables, the long shots are more challenging and it's more of a gamble to say, "he's out" no matter where they are. It just makes them play like us bangers a little. I like it.

Break Contest

Thats right Cleary, thats all it comes to with those buckets. I seen last night quite a few top players miss straight in shots. The "Cream" does rise to the top. I loved it............

Heres the problem as I see it if your going to have tight pockets it should be on all the tables not just one .A person could do well not ever being put on that table. And also in golf pros play on the same size holes as you an I on a daily basis. Just make the same every where. Then the cream would rise to the top.

Are you talking about the NCS 14.1 National Championship played last August at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ (won by Dan Louie)? If so, those pockets were not particularly tight.

The Predator World 14.1 Championship was held in the same room three weeks later and Oliver Ortman ran 100 or more in four consecutive games.

Yeah, Comet had pretty generous pockets. I know they put new cloth on between the NCS and the World Championship but I think they were pretty generous at the NCS, too.

Maybe he was thinking about the year before when the World Championship was played on Diamonds.

While seeing the top pros play rotation on 4” pockets is nice to see the best in pool humbled I wouldn’t want to see a steady diet of it at all tournaments. I do agree that 4 ½” are a little too wide on a non-Diamond for top pros, but 4” take too much out of the game. Maybe 4 ¼” might go over better for pro rotation tournaments IMO. If you saw the women’s regional championship played on the 4” pockets you know what I mean…it wasn’t pretty for but a few like Shu Han Chang. Johnnyt

PS: That is what made the way Efren Reyes played against Mika so amazing. It was on 4” pockets. I don’t buy too many dvd’s of matches but I will buy the Reyes/Mika match from TAR to have and show others that never seen him play like that and to support TAR. Johnnyt

Thats a tough one to answer. It seems that most enjoy watching runout pool with larger pockets being used. If I am watching on tv or a stream then larger pockets are better. Watching those missed shots is brutal. If I am watching in person or playing, then I prefer the smaller pockets.

I agree...I would also like to see more pool played on 6x12 tables with tight pockets.just my two cents.

Too tight for 14.1 or rotation games, IMO, but I like the idea of this size pocket for eight ball and one pocket played by top players.

They don't play 14.1 on a bar table either johnny.

As for 4" pockets ...sure! Regular golfers like myself don't play 550 yard par 4's....or hit out of 4" rough. Why? Because I can't do it. The pros can.

It's all skill level imo. Why shouldn't the pros play on 4" pockets. That's why they are called PROS. If you play in a Pro Event then you would have to play on Pro Equipment.

Last night, watching the Mezz event finals, I found myself getting a little bored. They were playing on 3.75" pockets, according to one of the stream chatters. Lots of missed balls. Almost no full 10b runouts. My buddy, who isn't all the much into pool, said "this guy rodney sure misses a lot".

I don't think he enjoyed watching it a lot either.

I think strictly from a spectator standpoint, this blows.

Ask yourself "Why is pool fun to play?" The answer of course, is to see the balls go into the hole!!!! It's innate, there's something about it that humans are fascinated by. You can see it in my three year old's eyes when he makes a shot on my table, either by rolling them in or hitting a dead combo that I set up for him. I want to see the balls go in the holes.

I don't want to knock tight pockets but anything less than 4 1/2" with a deep shelf is out for me. If others want to play on tighter conditions, MOVE TO EUROPE AND PLAY SNOOKER!!!!!!!!! WE PLAY POOL IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!
