Foreign Players-Why are they here?

I guess you're misunderstanding my post, as it probably was not written well.

I don't give a hoot where a player is from, truly. What I am saying is that if a player is an American citizen, then when he travels to China, Qatar, or Philippines, just to throw three countries out there, and competes in world competitions, the player should be representing the United States, not the country where he was born and used to live in. If he is making his home the United States and he's an American, he should represent America.

MMA fights have this kind of confusion all the time.

Again, I don't care where they are from if they are competing in the Joss event at Turning Stone or the Seminoles Tour. I am talking about competition with country representations. :)

And that's exactly how it is in international competitions! ALL players have name cards with their country clearly listed on it. Even though Alex may live in Canada, he is still listed as being from The Philippines.

If Thorsten Hohmann is an American citizen, why does he still represent Germany?

Also, I remember Charlie Williams representing Korea one time, too, when he was competing in Korea.

I didn't know he's an American citizen. He may have dual citizenship for all we know. Sorry, I can't answer that question any better.

Thanks for trying, anyway, Jay.

MMA fighters are always representing countries that they are not citizens of, and I am wondering if it is the same with pool today.

I see Brazilian MMA fighters representing Netherlands in world competitions.

I was curious if there was a rule about citizenship, like a waiver or something.

I'm with joe_jaguar on this one. We think we are the land of taxes! Ask Mika or Darren what their income tax rate is in their home countries.

Lyn

Nope. Only guy who gambles is Daz. Thorsten never gambles and Mika will but rarely. None of them are out there matching up enough to make any difference.

I like to they think come here because America is a pretty cool place. Also while we bag on the state of pool it is better here with more quality players than most places in the world. I know where I'm choosing to live if it's between the Philippines, Taiwan and the U.S.

I was thinking more along the lines of Santos, Parica, and Gomez.

I see women in the Miss Texas pageant representing cities in which they do not nor ever have lived in.

When the swimsuit competition comes around, I quit giving a rats a** what city they are from ;)!!!

Maniac (thinking JAM wears her feelings about the current state of pool on her sleeve. Lighten up, baby!!!)

I have a lot of positive things to say about pool: regional tours and leagues.

Professional pool, however, is another story.

Yes, regional tours are great for pool, and leagues, well.....they are just plain fun and keep the industry alive.

Professional pool does have its shady side, to say the least.

You're a great gal, Jen!!!

Some of it might be the promoter or office people doing that. You never know. When someone plays for years under one country, then becomes a citizen of another it might just be a habit to put their original country next to their name.

Many times, Jason, who is Canadian is listed as being from the wrong country all because of the bank the check came from or the address on the paypal address. Once he was listed as being from Winnipeg, Illinois, Canada. Another he was from Toronto, Manitoba, USA. None of those places exist but they tried really hard to figure out where he was from!

I don't have near the skill to be a pro or touring/traveling player, but I don't think I'd enjoy it if I did- it must get quite tiresome to be on the road all the time- how do you maintain friendships or relationships? Do these guys even really have a home? It seems like some of these guys are on the road all of the time

beav - I left you rep with the answer. You can now ask that that this thread be locked and go on to your next question.

You can not have dual citizenship in Germany.

actually you can but not in his case...my kids have Finnish and German passport....Finnish because I am Finnish and German because their mother is German.....when they reach the age of 18 they have to choose...
but German law does allow for dual-citizenship (American does not actually)

Thanks for the reply, Sarah. I do understand what you mean.

It is difficult for me to convey my thoughts on the forum sometimes. My opinions don't matter anymore anyway.

It may be hard for some to understand the financial difficulties associated with competing on a regular basis with pool politics and all of the other niceties. "There's no place like home," as they say, and I never realized that until I found myself in Vegas one year crying my eyes out, wondering why in the heck was I there when I was not enjoying my life anymore.

It is nice that there are some pool industry members who offer financial support to young upstart companies as well as aspiring pro and pro pool players. This is a godsend. Not everybody is so fortunate. Some have to pay their own way.

Today, the BCA helps not only North American players, but they offer support to players from other countries now.

Personally, I don't really care where a player is from, though some on this thread seem to have misinterpreted my words.

Again, my thoughts are that if the player is competing in a competition where countries are represented, it would seem logical for the player to be wearing the country's colors he is a citizen of instead of the country's colors from where he was born.

Good luck to you in your future endeavors. :)

I have seen you mention this several times now and I do not understand what you mean. What support exactly are they providing any pro player, foreign or domestic ?

I know most of the top guys and I haven't ever heard them talk about getting anything from the BCA. That doesnt mean something doesnt happen just means I have never heard about it. You keep bringing it up so maybe you can shed some light on the situation.

As for one of your other points, perhaps the people who do get support from inside and outside industry have worked a little harder at doing the things it takes to receive that support than the ones who do not receive it.

BCA support? Well, I have written extensively about it in another voluminous thread, and I don't choose to hash it over again in this thread with you. I don't want to wrestle in the mud, for one thing.

As far as working harder and getting support, some folks have given support when entities/players were a nobody, only to have the entities/players wipe their feet on them down the road.

Maybe you can find somebody else to quote on this forum besides me, JCIN.

How about a link? I don't know the thread you are talking about.

And the whole passive agressive thing towards me is really getting old. If I knew asking Keith to do a podcast four years ago would be held over my head till the end of time believe me I would give up all the glory and riches that have resulted from that storied event.

I am guessing you forget the offers of a paid trip to the Derby with free room, all three tournament entries and a free roll in a TAR match. Which was turned down because someone thought the Executive West was beneath them to stay at. Or the time I offered to pay you for a tshirt deal and you told me to find someone more deserving. You come on here and take thinly veiled shots at me and I am sick of it. You want to say something come right out and say it but you better be damn sure because I am tired of being nice and having rocks thrown at me so I just might throw some back.
