Good news about the U.S. Open

Just got off the phone with Barry Behrman, the creator and promoter of the U.S. Open (for only 35 years now). All sanction requirements have been taken care of with the WPBA and many of the top women will be in this years event. Even the great Allison Fisher has contacted Barry to say that she will be playing.

This is shaping up as one of the most exciting U.S. Open's ever! A full field of 256 players is very possible, with many of them being ladies. I'm guessing 25-30 women players. Personally I'd love to see at least one or two women go deep, like maybe final sixteen or twenty four. And I think it's very possible. Barry thinks a women could make the final four. Hey, it could happen!

Plus, as many of you know, Barry is offering a reduced entry fee this month of only $400 (full entry is $500). Next month it will go up to $450, so get your entry in quick! The field will shut off at 256 and I'm thinking it may fill early this year. Lower entry fee and all those straight shooting gals!

In case your wondering, the reduced entry fees will NOT reduce the purse. Barry will be making up the difference out of his pocket. So if you pay a $400 entry fee now, Barry will throw in the extra $100 to make it look like $500. What a guy!

Additionally in case you didn't know, Barry also pays the entry fee of ALL past champions who wish to play. Usually about fifteen guys get in via this route. This year several women who won past U.S. Opens (prior to 1994) that Barry put on, will also get a free ride. Did I already say, WHAT A GUY!

None of this money is deducted from the added money of $50,000. What this means is that with a full field of players the total purse will be $178,000. I'm guessing a first prize around $40,000! Not too shabby!

All and all, this is shaping up as one of the best Opens ever. I'd recommend this event to pool fans everywhere. I promise you will get your money's worth, and then some! I know I'll be there. There are good deals on hotels and motels (an abundance of them too) all around the Chesapeake Convention Center.

By the way players, in my capacity as co-TD along with Ken Shuman, I will do my damnedest to see that there are no 3 AM matches this year. I will do my best to make sure no match starts after Midnite. I believe I can make that happen.

This is exciting! I gotta go!

I for one am stoked to have the women become eligible. It adds a whole new dynamic (plus it'll make it less of a sausage fest).

Hats off to you Barry. Here's to hoping this is the best Open ever!

BTW, if you want players to get done before 3am, have 'em use the magic rack. Yeah yeah, I know they surely won't this year, but if they did, I'd bet it'd save 1-2 hours a day. Sorry, the racking BS is my biggest gripe @ The Open.

Thanks Jay for the update that is great news about the women (and about time). I have been as a spectator to the Open 3 times in past years, the last was the Pagulayan show year. Every year I hope I can make it as Barry puts on a fantastic tournament and the players make themselves avaialble to the fans, which is awesome in itself. I hope this year that the large contigent of filipinos can come out and that more international players make it, you never know??? I would love to be able to go this year more than ever with the large field expected and with Mika trying to make history (go Mika) it's going to be the nuts. My recomendation to any fan who's planning to attend, buy the VIP seating, you will be glad you did come Friday and Saturday.

That's great news, Jay! Barry is great people and the US Open just gets bigger and better every year. With the exception of the one year, with the live TV coverage, it been a smooth running tourney (just kiddin, Barry)

I'll be there, like every year.

That's great news Jay. Personally, with a full field, I'd like to see 1st Place go back to $50K, like it was prior to 9/11. I think I'm gonna try to arrange my schedule so I can be there, to see the whole event (first time ever!). There hasn't been a full field in many years.

first place 40000 not to bad lol lol
what a joke pool is.
the us open pays 40000 you have to beat 220 of the best players in the world for that.
to me it sucks it should pay like 800000 for first.

agreed. maybe you should play another sport that pays better.

I assume as we get closer to the actual event there will be more information, but do we know any details about streaming yet? (Yes, I'm a noob at this. Proud of it, and not ashamed to ask questions, heh)

I would never be able to get the time off to actually go and watch in person, much as I would love to. Thanks.

Great post Jay, thank you.....sounds like a huge event with a massive purse that will draw the best players in the world.....

I agree with you Chris, but you know better than I it aint gonna be like that for a long time. Even guys like you and me(both action players-see below) should have a shot at robbing Doctors for 10K-20K every couple months, there are (perhaps were) golf hustlers making big $$$, I wonder if the internet knocked their action. When I say you and me, let me be clear you are much much more stronger than me, can play longer, your superior in everyway to me in pool-I said you and me cause I do get in action and never play tournments. One thing I can do like you is the more I play for the better I play.

Now back to Jay's thread, Its great to see that all the girls will be there this year, which girl will finish the highest? there will be more rail action than in the history of that tournment ever, mark my words. I'll bet on Jasmine. I hope all the girls from Asia show up thats a big pool of talent there, Shane lost to Yu Ram Ka(the only Asian girls name I know-sorry probably spelled it wrong she is nice) oh yeah I know Ming Mg, sorry Ming.

So with lots of rail bets, I hope the girls mix it up at the pool room down the road and match up for some action there too. This will be the all time best US Open ever from the looks of things now. I will be there for sure-in a new Ed Hardy shirt LOL. I'm really looking foward to going and seeing all my friends.

Good news Jay. It's great to hear the women will be playing, a full field will help everybody involved. Now if you could only figure out a way to move it closer to Missouri.

Sorry you feel that way Chris. Yes, it ain't golf money, but not much is these days. There are many sports that pay far less and have much greater expenses. I'll start with local car racing, motorcycle racing, snow skiing, water skiing, trap shooting, horseshoe pitching, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and many more that are considered professional sports.

By the way, you don't have to beat all 220 (or 256) players to win. You just have to beat eight in a row and you'll be just fine. Remember, you chose pool, it didn't choose you. See you in October.

wow full field men an women this will be the greatest U.S open EVER!! thanks to Jay Helfert an Barry an everyone thats helpin with the U.S open good thng it wll be on stream for me too watch :D
