Has anyone ever heard of Keith McCready?

Why wouldnt someone write a movie about keith, with the stuff that happen in his teens, all the way to the end,it would be one hell of a story(movie),give the man the respect he deserves with a very nice payday!movie, movie!

Should have seen him shoot at SBE 4-5 years ago,by Sat. afternoon the table in the pit was either 2 or 4 hundred a rack. He played some lights out
Pool. I'm not gonna say what I think he won but it was mind boggling.

How good is He ? Is He still playing pool?...

That may be a cached post from another forum, I would surmise. :p

Keith has taken a hiatus from shooting pool on the tournament trail, which used to be two, three, and four times every single month. It just wasn't financially feasible after 6 or 7 years. Heck, even winning $10,000 in cash at one tournament, we were so stuck from the other ones that it couldn't even come close to bringing us back to even. But I'm preaching to the choir on this forum about how expensive it is to compete professionally. :grin-square:

Keith still plays locally on occasion, but it's for recreation and socializing, more than anything else. Contrary to popular belief, Keith has *not* retired from pool. Professional Pool in its current state, however, is retired as a sport to players like Keith. He's an old-school kind of player, but with pool politics in the United States the way they are -- well, I've expressed my opinion on this topic many times, and it ain't going to change. :(

I watched the Disney flick Secretariat a few weeks ago with my daughter. Keith walks in the middle of the movie and proceeds to tell me about being there at the Kentucky Derby when Secretariat won that race. It is something he never shared with me before. This man never ceases to amaze me. I mean, can you believe that? :smile2:

To make a long story short, Keith was 15 years old, and it was his second road trip in life from California. He was with an older player, and they were looking for pool action, hoping Keith would make a score since nobody knew who the skinny kid was. All of his friends at this time were stone-cold gamblers, and they would make frequent trips to the horse track. Basically, Keith's "formative years" were spent with pool room "regulars" after his family unit had taken an unfortunate turn.

Well, the two of them were at the race that Secretariat ran before the Kentucky Derby and lost money betting on him to win. Secretariat had come in third, much to the surprise of everyone. However, Keith saw what happened at that race and knew it was a fluke. So they decided to travel to Churchill Downs, determined to bet it all on Secretariat in the big Kentucky Derby.

The odds were 3/2, and they bet every dollar they had in their pockets. Unfortunately, Churchill Downs was packed, and they couldn't even get inside the joint to watch Secretariat up front and close. But they did get down with their bet. They then walked about a mile on foot and found a hillside nearby the racetrack and watched Secretariat win the Kentucky Derby from afar through binoculars. What a once-in-a-lifetime thrill! Where there's a will, there's a way, as they say.

Keith has had an uncanny ability to always be where the action is, and because of that, his story is quite unique -- one which is still in the making, I might add.

So, when you least expect it, The Keith McCready Show just may be at a neighborhood pool room near you real soon. And I'll just leave it at that. He's still got a little lightning left in the jug.

Keith and me at the beginning of our pool journey. Picture taken with my camera by Diana Hoppe -- [Hi, Diana :smiling-heart:] -- at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since that photo was taken.

15 dimes, but who's counting?!

It was fun to watch! Keith was outstanding that day.

I had a blast. He had three consecutive runs. If he were here with me while I was posting this, he'd remember the count. He's really good with memory when it comes to numbers, money, and pool shots. I want to say it was two 10s and an 11.

This is him at the SBE when he was running out from everywhere on that action table. What a happy memory!

If the Louie Roberts Action & Entertainment Award had existed in the first couple of years of the Derby City Classic, Keith would have easily won it.

Freddie <~~~ and still people would have complained ;)

I know what you mean. Keith thinks he should have won the Louie Roberts A&E Award a couple times at the Executive West. :D

Just like in pool tournaments, you can't please everybody. That's for sure!

I'll never forget that story you wrote about him, Fred, as he walked into the chapel with the railbirds following him like the Pied Piper. I still laugh out loud when I have that vision in my head from your words! :grin-square:

JAM,
Will Keith publish his own story soon? It should be a best seller here on AZ and the world?:)

I was one of those that followed him.

Ha, knew somebody would figure out who he was

He is the guy that hangs around with perhaps the greatest poster on this forum!

I bumped into Keith or he bumped into me on one of his first trips through Greenway. He was chirping at me from the counter mostly to entertain his fans there. I was with a beautiful blonde and Nellie Belle was far more interesting to me than any other game could be. He did get under my skin a bit though and I came back hunting him the next night without a date with me. Wasn't to be and if it weren't for The Color of Money a few years later while I still remembered Keith I'd never have put a name with the face.

No, not Keith..... From my point of view, Keith has always been a prime candidate for this award, even before the idea existed. Every single time I saw him at a tourney during the years, he was constantly trying to set a game. He is, what the award stands for.

I was at Lexington Ky, for the All Star tourney one time, and Keith was trying to get a game set up. I was watching them all haggle, and there were several Pro players standing around. Keith started on Johnny Archer, and Johnny refusing to play a couple of times, then Shannon Daulton busts in on the conversation, and says he will play Keith some one pocket. At one point during all the conversations, Keith made a crack to Johnny, that went something like "we can all see up your skirt Johnny, so I guess I will go play Shannon"..... Everyone was busting up laughing. He was always entertaining. There are only a few around, that are as much fun to watch, one of them being Alex. Nice to hear Keith is still hitting a few balls.

Ran into Keith about 1982 in Salem, OR on a golf course. He immediately wanted to play for $20/hole without kowing my game was twice his skills, and he graciously paid me. Was travelling with a big lumpy loud guy and a cute chick, but was taking a lil break from pool. Had me call him "Evil". When I mentioned I was from Seattle, his eyes went kinda dreamy and he said "maybe I should look up that lawyer guy" (Harry Platis, man-of-action). Kinda figured his buddy was full of it when he said Evil was about 6th best American pool player, until 2 months later he was on ESPN in a big tourney. Keith in a tuxedo, squatting on a chair with his shiny new shoes on the seat...

Should you have a few hours warning please send me a PM I would like an excuse to get out of the house. Heck, maybe the OP will be able to get out that day too.

McCready

Keith is without a doubt THE legend of pool. Every player I know has a Keith story, and weather Keith is the winner or Keith is the loser, you know its going to be a great story.

Here is a new story, about a young Keith playing an even YOUNGER John Brumbeck. I talked to John a few times and asked if he had a Keith or Louie Roberts story. He had action with both but for this thread I will just share the Keith story.

John said, he had Keith trapped. John got in a bank game with Keith and knew he had the best of it. He had him down early, but even John was a little star struck with Keith. Keith came out ahead of Brumbeck in banks when he knew he had the best of it. Keith just kept playing full offense, no safe banks. John said Keith had several big runs, all offense.

JAM and Keith both need to realize that the pool community is still in awe of Mr. McCready. I really, really think they dont have clue how much.

Ever see someone tell a Keith story without a smile? ;)

Ken
