How would Nick Varner match up with tony cohan today?

Nick in his prime would be a favorite over the current T-Rex in an All-Around match. Nick played every game strong, with Banks, One Pocket and 14.1 three of his best games. Nick had more heart per square inch than just about anybody else. And Nick was no slouch when it came to gambling either! He never got weak and he never gave up. Tony on the other hand is a top player today, particularly at One Pocket, but he is not nearly as strong at some other pool disciplines.

I don't have all the specifics, but Jimmy Fusco's last serious gambling session was with Tony about 10 years ago. I think they were playing 500 per game in Philly. Fusco ended up a few games ahead.

I only bring this up, because Fusco and Varner are both old school players employing more of the squeeze style of one pocked, as compared to the current pro players.

Carry on:)

Yeah, and Tony got 10 years better and Nick got 10 years older, so, there's that.

I saw Nick play in Phoenix back in 1990ish. He was playing Danny Diliberto some 9 ball.
All I remember is Nick running rack after rack and can't remember him missing unless he played a lock up safety.
After about an hour and a half, Danny's backer said "enough".
Some of the best pool I've ever watched in person.
T-Rex has never played rotation like that. In his prime, Nick Varner was a monster.
Hard to compare two different generations but I doubt Tony would even be close to Nick speed if both were in their prime.

I think it is pretty well acknowledged that 1p is tonys game and the world can bet what it wants, at that game.
Rotation, not so much...

That is my point. I havent seen Tony play a "wedge" player like Varner. The one pocket today is an 8 and out runout match.

I still go back to the Buddy Hall quote. Buddy gave Keith weight when they gambled and Keith wore a shirt that said, "The World Gets the 8" (apparently Buddy wasnt the world)

Buddy's thoughts were it didnt matter what the spot was if they never get to shoot....;)

Today's Varner getting 3 balls versus today's Tony. In the action room, I think Tony would be a heavy favorite. I would bet on Tony.

I say that because when Efren and Frost last matched up, Efren looked out of stroke and tentative, Frost was in killer mode. As much as it kills me to say it, Frost probably could have spotted him 2 or 3 balls. I bet on Efren because I was betting on the Efren of his prime, but he wasn't anymore.

Varner has been out of the spotlight far longer than Efren. He's almost 70. It would be hard to take him even though he was a champion of champions.

Come on man do you always have to be so logical:wink:

I highly doubt he could give him 3 balls I'm not so sure of 2 , the mind set changes with the spot as for Nick I wouldn't count him out in a 10-7 game unless it today but if he had some time to sharpen up the old dog just might rise up to the occasion

The answer is no one would give Nick 8-5. If they wanna try let me know and I will fly Nick in personally on my jet.

Nick Varner in his hayday.

I saw Nick Varner play a race to 12 in a New York State Tournament located in Binghampton NY in roughly 1998. He was playing the then current NY State Amatuer Champion.

It was winner break. Nick won the lag broke and ran 5 racks. In game 6 Nick played a safe where the other player had no shot. Nick got ball in hand and ran that rack and the next 6 to close out the match 12-0. So I think in his hay day Nick was pretty good. and Earl Strickland who was on the next table closed out the other play 12 to 0 giving his opponent one shot in twelve games as well. These guys were extremely good.

All these pro's back in the 1980, 1990's could run 150 balls in straight pool without batting an eye.

In his prime,Nick was considered a top 1P by his peers, obviously this was before Efren's dominance in that game.

I haven't watched as much of Chohan's game as I'd like up close, but Nick at his best was VERY tough to beat at ANY game, because he did so little to beat himself. Tommy D.
