Is Max Eberle as big as a goof as I now think?

however if he puts his view out to the public then he has to be able to take the challenges to it.

the more absurd the more the person will get in backlashing. and it should be that way.
the more astute the more the person will get in back patting. and it should be that way.

I spent a few hours with Max at a bac table at the D once. Absolute pleasure to drink with. He seemed smart enough. He never talked about the earth or anything. He was advising me baccarat has the lowest house edge in the pit as long as you stay away from the sucker bets. He hit a few dragons with a c-note on em over the time we were there. Every time they chipped him his 4k he mentioned that that he really shouldn't be on the bet at all, but as much as he knows the EV sucks the variance is too much fun.

Not that these guys can't be as wrong as any of us, but I have watched programs with many extremely intelligent people, Elon Musk and Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Steven Hawking , among many others , who believe the odds are in favor , that our perception of life, is actually a Virtual Reality Simulation. Being controlled by an entity besides ourselves.
That would make Max and all of you wrong at the same time. Most of us don't really know shit. We like to think we do , but lets face it , is anything, you believe, of your own mental construction 100% , or is it something someone else said, or you read or heard?
If any of you are butt hurt by this reality check , weeeeelllll exxxxxcccccuuuuuuuse me !!!!!!!!!!!

In this scenario where everything is a simulation, it doesn't prove the actual scientists working within that simulation to uncover the mechanisms in it wrong! If you discover that the earth is an oblate spheroid within that simulation, then that would be a true statement from that point of view, so you'd not actually be wrong to claim that, only ignorant of another fact. Of course that presupposes that the simulation is an internally consistent world with laws of phyics governing the events and not just adapting the rules every second to fool you. I think the first variety of artificial world seems more parsimonius and logical, don't you? Just consider the data power needed for one versus the other. We can still apply Newtonian mechanics in fields that Sir Isaac would have no idea existed at the time of his discovery.

You can't expect people to prove everything themselves. Society would come to a grinding halt. The scientific method with peer review is doing this work allready. In theory and practise you COULD conduct your own experiments if you have the time and money. Nothing is stopping you, so go right ahead. But expecting every single person to have proven absolutely everything is an impossible standard. Also there is a system of logic to science where facts and knowledge build upon eachother so you can easily see wether a more complex statement is logical and possible if you have knowledge of the underlying, basic facts and theories. Proving these for yourself is usually more accessible and easy.

Every freaking thing these flat earthers claim to be a fact have been disproven hundreds and thousands of times allready. When a hole is found in their logic, they patch it up with far fetched ad-hoc hypotheses. This isn't science or anything admirable. Their pure refusal to accept the damning evidence against their "hypotheses" is not a proof of scepticism but dogmatism. When in school you learn how to calculate the earths circumference, how the tide works, the nature of the moon and the sun, how gravity works. It all ties beatifully into eachother. You learn to do basic experiments to show you why these things are true. Then people grow up and they forget all these hours in the lab and the classroom doing maths, it seems. I guess more people are completely uneducated than we realize.

The flat earthers make outlandish claims about crazy conspiracies, with no actual evidence to back it up. All the strict demands about having proofs for every statement apply only to others, and not to them. They claim the earth is flat and accellerating to account for gravity, ice-walls that can't be seen and are protected by mechanisms that can only be described as magic. All their physical facts would require a complete and utter revision of all scientific knowledge aquired so far. I mean nearly EVERYTHING would be wrong. Not only that, but the entire world of science would have to consist of lying psycopaths who all agree to keep a secret for hundreds of years. Not only scientists, but anyone in the airline and shipping industry, satellite companies, hundreds and hundreds of other industries who for one reason or another have to take the earths roundness, the working of gravity and other such basic facts into account. Think about that for a moment.

If you profess to believe that the earth is flat, in this day and age, and you had a proper education to at least high school there are only a few explanations to account for this. You're either an idiot, you're insane (usually it takes the form of religious nut, conspiracy nut or combination of the two) or you don't believe it at all and are a troll.

In this state of reality, brains are required to generate it.

I've known max for 30+ years and he is not as one dimensional as this discussion suggests.

That's a good man, there.

Exakly,

Happened to run across one of his " flat earth " discussions on FB. The oceans are held in place by ice walls, in which no one is allowed to go past because of the Antarctica treaty. The sun revolves around the earth, BTW the sun is only 3000 miles away, same size as the moon ( 32 miles diameter ). On and on and on.......... Put the pipe................

BTW I'm all for a good conspiracy theory every now and then, so what's the thoughts on why " they " want us to think the earth is round???

I've been in the flat earth conspiracy since 2014 and the topic fascinates me in a funny way, I always watch the debates on youtube for a laugh of what a flat earther might say because non of which make sense....Most of their arguments comes from misunderstanding of sciense. I've studied flat earthers and I still watch/follow them for laughs honestly.

I've seen all of their arguments, first of all let me tell you I am a Mechanical Engineer and I know exactly how they can misunderstand each and every argument they're into, some of which are just plain stupid and others are just the typical "Oh it made sense to me" or the other "I trust my senses" which is always flawed with us humans. I can literally show you pictures of straight lines and your eyes will deceive you thinking they are zigzagging, the human senses are just not as good as you may think. But tell that to a flat earther and he'll just disagree.

Anyway, as I said I've studied flat earthers and there are some traits in humans to become gullible enough to think the earth is flat.

1- A flat earther must be a government hater, this is a given fact! If you check all the flat earthers they have this in common, all of them think the governments are lying to them. All of them will never take the vaccine, all of them think the 9-11 is an inside job, all of them don't want governments at all.

2- The majority of flat earthers (Not all, but most) are uneducated, you can check their background. Most of them probably did not went to college or university, their highest education is probably grade 8 or 9 depending on the country but to put it into perspective, most of them quit schools at the age of 14-15.

3- To become a flat earther you must be in love with drama and conspiracy in general. You will never find a flat earther if they haven't been into conspiracies prior to flat earth, it's one of their traits. I mean you can check their eyes once you put a youtube video to them about the holocaust being fake or pyramids weren't build by the Egyptians, or a video of the moon fake landing...you can see their eyes will shine, this is something that's inside of their blood being in love with conspiracies. So if you found a guy like that, he's more likely to become a flat earther after watching an Eric Dubay (flat earth) video. Find me one flat earther who doesn't believe the 9/11 was an inside job, you will not find one, because it is usually a guy who loves conspiracies, he starts with the moon landing being fake, then into 9/11 then few conspiracies after that and in the end he'll find a flat earth youtube video.

4- All flat earthers find their resources and researchs on youtube by other gullible flat earthers, they think youtube is a research, they never read peer reviewd science books because yet again, they don't believe the system/goverment, they hate goverment as said in point 1.

5- A flat earther is most of the time just not smart enough, sorry to say this but it is true. He should be slow in general, if you give him an exam he'll do miserably, but then again he doesn't believe in education so he'll tell you that what is in the exam is just wrong.

These are the traits of a person who is more likely to become a Flat Earther.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread Bob Jewett (by linking to it in another thread) Quite amusing!

Has anybody ever found out if Eberle actually believes this or is just joking around?

A buddy of mine is friends with him and has had him over his house - yes, he believes this stuff but he's still a good guy.

It's hard to imagine a thread less worthy of being bumped, other than for the purpose of having it moved to NPR.

It unnecessarily attacks and tries to belittle a man who holds a very uncommon view. Max is one of the classiest guys in pool, and this thread accomplishes absolutely nothing.
SJM, your soooooo right.
Max is one of a kind man, great spirt involved in many career choices with allot of talent.
He's a ''one of a kind person''.
Caught between my generation and the the one twenty yrs before me.
When another trashes Max, it tells me allot more about that poster as a person.

Yes, he's a good dude, but does he really think the earth is flat?

When me and my buddy were talking about it I made the comment of "Surely, he's just having a little fun about the earth being flat" and he responded with "No, he really believes it".

My buddy has nothing but good things to say about Max.

Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration – that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather. - Bill Hicks News Anchor (RIP)

no one here is making fun of him as a person or saying he isnt a great guy or not intelligent. or calling him personal things, but are calling him out for his views on things that are obviously stupid thoughts about the earth. which also probably lead to other outlandish views in other segments of life.
