Leather wrap vs. Linen wrap?

Leather

Smooth leather feels the best to me. All my cues have leather wraps. My hands don't sweat much, and I like a little slip, so smooth leather works the best for me. I cannot play with a wrapless cue although they look great. I just don't like the feel of linen at all.

my 2 cents.

my personal preferences as regards to feel of the butt of the cue.....

pressed linen -> #1
wrapless no finish -Sealed and waxed only ->#2
wrapless w/finish -> #3

then everything else

leather or stacked feels basically like a wrapless IMOP just softer to the touch and depending on the finish on it can either be sticker or slicker than a wrapless handle w/finish

only problem with sealed/waxed only cues is that they won't play as stiff as a cue with finish....but the cue feels WARM in your hands.

I really like the waxed butt the best in regards to feel but being that a sealed cue plays better I'll rank the waxed feel 2nd. Just taking the feel into account and not playability etc, I must say a bare wood thats just sealed and waxed sure does feel sweeter than sweet.

thats just me tho,

Great Post

I've never really thought about a particular wrap or which on I would prefer on which cue. Sitting here, I'm pondering the feel of my cues and I know I like a linen wrap for my playing cue but now I realize that I prefer a Leather wrap for my break cue.

Stingray wrap

I see noone here has mentioned Stingray, which is in a class all by itself. Rubbery with little bony nodules peppered throughout, there's nothing quite like it -- it has a consistent feel no matter the humidity, if you have hyperhidrosis, or what-have-you.

I can't find any pics online of what this looks like, but hopefully someone can contribute.

When I'm financially able to do so, I'm going to get one or three of my cues done with a Stingray wrap.

I think wraps are like women. You love or like the one you are with. I have leather, lizard, elephant, linen, stacked, and wrap less and have tried cork. They all feel good. I think it just depends on the look you want.

Ask Mika or Archer or Varner if the look of their wrap is more important than the actual type of wrap, I think you know the answer.

The question of the OP is what wrap do YOU (I) like better. Not what Mika or Archer or Varner like.

I gave my opinion and that is it really doesn't matter to me. They all have their place and it depends on the look I want.

My hands sweat alot during play as well and i have found that good quality leather/lizard is much easier and more comfortable to hold onto than linen. Wrapless works well too

I have seen guys that sweat so much, they wore out the Lizard, Elephant on the other hand is much more resistant to sweat.
Leather for me too.

I prefer linen over anything else. I have a few wrapless too.
I tried a leather wrap and altho I think they really add some pizzazz to a cue, they're not for me as I don't care for the feel.
Now, I definitely could live with a stacked leather wrap tho.

The 1st, 3rd and last at the bottom of that pic is the kind of leather wrap I prefer, and I'd much prefer a leather wrap to linen since my hands don't sweat much at all, but I do prefer a wrap to be comfortable to hold when shooting and for this, I feel that a good plain leather wrap does that job nicely :)

Although I have a linen wrap on my current player, I'm considering on having it removed and have a plain leather wrap installed on it, which I reckon will make such a nice improvement to the cue for comfort and for shooting with.

One thing that is worth noting though is that from time to time, it might be worth while putting a very thin coating of skin cream/hand lotion onto a leather wrap on the day before you're planning to shoot pool.

This should help to keep the wrap a little more comfortable and tacky, since leather is basically animal skin.
On top of this, it should also help to keep the leather wrap preserved for that little bit longer, but this may not work on all leather wraps like lizard or snakeskin, and it certainly won't work on a cork or linen wrap :) lol

Well, maybe that was my problem as I only had one cue with it. I didn't care for the feel and seemed to thro me off while shooting. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't try another type of leather tho.
I have a Wrap jig and lots of blanks so maybe I should get to work.

I use linen and leather, but I do like the leather better. I use what they call elephant ear, and it's great. I will be changing all my linen cues to leather shortly.

I think Mueller's does a Stingray wrap for $75. I've thought about getting it several times.

I prefer no wrap.

Those are "Turk's Heads" knots tied at the ring points! Just for fun!

I like

to change from time to time, so I have linen, leather, and wrapless cues. If I had to go with just one type of wrap, and being an old school type of guy, I guess it would be linen. I have to admit that I have never tried the more exotic leathers like elephant ear. And I have never tried cork, mostly just because I don't like how it looks. Guess I am kind of shallow in that regard.

I prefer Leather wraps !!! But, look who's talking !!! LOL

Check out my new Cue Tattoo. A new concept in leather wraps. Leather wraps with artwork.

My preference:

1. Lizard
2. Elephant Ear
3. Leather
4. Snake Skin
5. Stacked Leather
6. Wrapless
10. Linen - don't like linen.

I'm not a wrap expert. I've played mostly with wrapless cues or linen wraps. Question: If a loose grip is best, as most of the experts agree, shouldn't the best wrap be the one that offers the most friction between hand and cue?
I recently got a $3 rubber grip (cue condom) from Seybert's and put it on one of my cues. It feels pretty good. I would think there are some cue makers out there who have cut grooves and used these or similar rubber.
