Director of Student Life Sports Tim Canavan has announced the hiring of Mark Wilson as head coach for the new Lindenwood University billiards program, which will begin competition during the fall semester. Wilson has been a billiards instructor and coach for over 35 years and as a professional player, has been ranked in the top 25 in the World.

Mark Wilson

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Mark Wilson to lead our billiards program,” Canavan said about the hire. “His extensive experience and deep character makes for a perfect fit and he will be a great addition to lead one of our latest student life sports.”

Wilson is a five-time Wisconsin State Billiard Champion and three-time Illinois State Billiard Champion. He has served as a billiard commentator for ESPN, Fox Sports and Accu-Stats Video, and has been a columnist for Billiards Digest. He has also coached many of the sport’s top players including Jeanette Lee, Ewa Laurance, Sarah Rousey, Gerda Hofstetter, and Karen Corr.

Wilson is looking forward to building the program. “One of the most compelling things about Lindenwood is that it’s a first rate institution, a hidden gem,” he commented. “To be associated with something like that is a nice platform from which to teach billiards.”

Lindenwood plans to attract some of the best collegiate players in the country by offering scholarships in the sport, becoming only the second university aside from the University of Akron (Ohio) to do so.

First!

Great to see colleges that offer pool programs. And a great positoin for Mr. Wilson!

What would be the requirements for scholarships? I think any young pool player would be interested.

Nice story, Watchez. It would be nice if scholarships programs caught on with a lot more universities. It could bring kids into the sport as a way of getting their education.

Congrats to you Mark and congrts to pool. They will be the big winner here in the long run. Johnnyt

Congrats to Mark... very well deserved! I thoroughly enjoy his commentary every year at the DCC.

I met him for the first time at the DCC this year, and though I do not know him well, friends that do know him well only have extremely positive things to say about Mark.

Where was the Billiard Program when I went to school? In my college years I spent more than the cost of tuition in a Pool Hall and it didn't come with an instructor.

Congrats Mark! Sounds like a great program to be a part of. Hopefully more schools will follow this one's example. Billiards with all it's disciplines is a natural fit for higher education. I wish I had had a shot at a scholarship based on pool. That would have been a collegiate dream come true.

Congratulations to Mark, and the University! Mark is a great guy, and exceptional teacher, as well as a player.
Mark thank you for being a class act to me personally when I was real young, and was playing in my first Camel event. I was extremely nervous, and you and my friend Nick Mannino showed me around, and gave me great advice, and practiced many racks with me to get me loose!
They got the right man for the job!
Sincerely,
Greg A.

Sorry, do not know how the pic of my cue got in the post, and do not know how to edit it out.
Oh well Mark likes SW cues anyway! Good luck Mark on the new venture.

Mark's Book

Does anybody know what is going on with the book Mark was working on? I have heard very promising things about it, and it seems like the publication date keeps getting moved.

Btw, first post. I love this place :)

mark

He is a great teacher and real good guy to talk to. Great stories and pretty damn good player. From Illinois just across from MO though. Congrats.

Congrats Mark !!!!!

I know many players whose games' he has improved............including mine.

THAT'S AWESOME, WE NEED MORE OF THIS INVOLVED AT ALL UNIVERSITY'S!!

Heh, that is kinda what I was thinking. No offense to Mark on getting a cool new job but the best piece of info I got from the OP was the fact that a university has a new Billiards program. I think that is awesome and if every university followed suit that would help this sport hugely in not only increasing competitive participation but potentially getting some fans watching the sport too as one university battles it out with another for the bragging rights.

They are going to need some strict guidelines on those scholarships. Otherwise, they are going to get a rash of 40 year old freshman applicants.
