Mosconi Cup 'Conspiracy' ????

And I would like to bet that Shawn Putnam is not in the Top 5 when it is all said and done - no offense to Shawn.

I think you have to be in the top three to be guaranteed a spot. the other two spots are handed out by matchroom I think. Dont know the criteria though.

There's definitely a long road ahead: Hard Times to Come!

On March 25, 2011, Matchroom decided to effect a change for the better in their ranking systam, thanks to an inquiry by American Stevie Moore asking them to reconsider their ranking system. Matchroom listened and reacted.

In an effort to connect with the public and keep them abreast of the latest happenings, here's the Matchroom press release from March 25:

MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that after considering the continuing deterioration in the economy, the rapid rise in airfares along with the price of oil and other factors, they have decided to eliminate the requirement for US players to compete in overseas tournaments in order to obtain Mosconi Cup ranking points.

That means that the following four events will be dropped from the ranking list; Beijing Open (May), World Pool Masters (June), China Open (June), World 9 Ball Championship (June/July) and the

The AzBilliards press release has a paragraph ending in "in the" with no period or further words, as depicted above. I wonder if there's anything missing.

Either Matchroom Sports or AzBilliards could use the professional services of a proofreader like "moi."

Added to the calendar are the two double elimination events from the highly successful Seminole Tour. The first is the $25,000 added event at Snookers Billiards in Rhode Island from 5th to 7th August and the second is the $50,000 added Steve Mizerak Championship taking place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood, Florida in mid-September.

The US Mosconi Cup Ranking consists of 10 events – all based in the USA – and points will be allocated as per the BCA Points List with each event weighted depending on total purse, size of field and number of top-ranked players competing.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event will be allocated points and at the conclusion, after the 2011 US Open, the top three players will automatically gain entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The remaining two players will be Matchroom Sport wildcard picks although the ranking will play a part in this as well as any significant performances in ‘World’ events.

In addition, due to a clash of dates, with Turning Stone Summer now coinciding with the 2011 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool in September, all players will now be allowed to drop their worst event of the ten from the ranking list.

This will enable the two players selected to represent the United States in the World Cup in the Philippines, to compete without being disadvantaged in the Mosconi Cup rankings.

The Mosconi Cup Ranking Events are as follows:

Steve Mizerak Championship 4-7 November.
Turning Stone Winter 16-19 December
The Masters 1-5 March
Players Championship, Valley Forge 13-16 March

Ultimate 10 Ball Championship 21-24 April
US Open 10 Ball Championship 16-21 May
Seminole Tour Event 3 5-7 August
Turning Stone Summer 8-11 September
Seminole Tour Event 5, Steve Mizerak Championship 16-18 September
The US Open 9-Ball Championship 16-22 October

Next up is the Ultimate 10-Ball Champinship, April 21-24. Go Earl, Dennis Hatch, Mike Dechaine, Brandon Shuff, and Shane Van Boening!

Good for Jack. He is a class act.

But lemme tell you about that iguana...

Quite a while after yesterday's match between Archer and Strickland ended, Archer sat down with Sherodaka behind the computer screens for quite a lengthy and interesting interview. The chat was still on, and Sherodaka asked Johnny many questions of her own plus some of those being posted by people in the chat room.

The interview covered many interesting topics, one of which was this one about Strickland and the Mosconi Cup. Johnny said that he and Earl get along well off the table, but are not close friends. Johnny said that while Earl is a great guy off the table, he is plagued by demons while competing at pool. As far as the Mosconi Cup, Johnny would like to have Earl play if he could somehow slay the demons first. But if Earl was like the Earl of recent Cups, then Johnny would not want to play on the same team, because Earl is a totally disruptive force to the team as a whole (even if Earl won every match he played). Johnny said that he has reached an age and a point in life where he just refuses to play the Mosconi Cup solely for "a check." Johnny also named Rodney Morris as another player who feels similarly.

I don't know whether that interview is or will be available somewhere, but it was Johnny being candid about all sorts of topics and I recommend it to anyone who is able to find it.

Jack Hines vs The Pearl

Here's a YouTube clip of Jack Hines versus Earl Strickland from the Ohio Open in 1988: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjeO7gm99BE

Earl sure did have a head of hair on him! :p

I love this classic video.Earl looks so fluid and shoots great patterns.I had never really heard much about Jack Hines but he has a great stroke and cue ball control. The pearl did have massive hair then very funny.

Sounds like tactful and honest comments from Johnny there, rather than skirting the issue. Shawn also mentioned that he and Earl got into some sort of disagreement during (what I believe was) Shawn's only MC appearance. No doubt that he can be distracting, he just needs to keep himself in check like the rest of us do, though I'm not sure if he can play his best pool without creating at least a little dramma. He seems to need it.

So much for the whole 'Bad Blood' pretense. :shakehead:

Anyway, hopefully Matchroom can solve this problem, as I predict Earl will qualify for the team this year.

If I had the opportunity to play for the USA in the Mosconi Cup I don't care who was on the team I would jump at the chance to get on.

I still don't know what this means. Is JA saying that as it stands right now he will not play on the US side if Earl is on it unless he can somehow prove he won't misbehave? How exactly is Earl supposed to satisfy Archer that he has "slayed the demons", a note from his doctor?

Archer will play.

I believe this was a rhetorical question, but as an option going forward, couldn't they have a team alternate that could substitute at the captain's discression, i.e., in the case of misconduct.

I would pay to see that match. Regardless of the level of the pool it would be guaranteed to be entertaining.

E-x-h-i-b-i-t-i-o-n.

(The Earl in that 1988 Ohio Open video is the kinda player I'd like to see Earl snap back into. Just play pool. This is the kinda no nonsense play we should all strive for.)

Conspiracy

I am not a lawyer , but if someone is conspiring to keep Earl, or anyone else out of the Mosconi Cup, thereby affecting his ability to make a living, by threatening people, there may be some legal issues they wouldn't want to deal with.
I hope it all works out, and our best players go and play great together. Until I hear Johnny Archer say it, I will just think of it as Shawn Putnams opinion.
If it turns out to be true then I would vote for any players involved to not be chosen.

If JA chooses not to play because of Earl, then let him stay home. There are a lot of great players who want to play so badly for the USA

Just so you know, there's 11 Mosconi Cup ranking events, and so far, 4 have been played.

Guess who is in the lead as of March 15, 2011?!

Am I missing something, or are we maybe being a little premature thinking Archer will definitely make the team. I don't see him in the points rankings at all. I know he would be a definite Captain's pick, but if for some reason he didn't want to play, it may make Matchroom's decision a little easier.
