Most Overrated Players

john you know there will always be haters.
az billiards is no diff.
im told im overated all the time.
the thing is ask the guys who have played me or you
or any good player
see if they say that.
thats who we should care about what they say of our game.
good luck vs alex should be a good match.

Some food for thought for you, John and any other pro. Even the dead (Mosconi,Fats etc) have their critics. It's not if there are critics (there always will be) it's if you're still being criticized once you're gone. THAT'S the real measure of success!

I would guess that almost every person that has any knowledge of pool whatsoever knows the fake name "Minnesota Fats" and most probably associate that name with a great pool player. With that in mind, how could anyone possibly be more over-rated?

I'm not sure you could offend the guy when he was alive so I'll not worry about that now.

just so you know Charlie is a great guy, if it were a gentlemen contest he is in my top 5.

I have to disagree. To be fair though, as much as I loathe Charlie "THE SPAMMER" Williams personally, he really is an awesome player.

People are taking this too seriously. A question was asked and many answered. I believe some players may be over rated, no different than someone selling millions of records with 1 great song. They call them 1 hit wonders and pool has them.

1 hit wonder in music... set for life
1 hit wonder in pool... over rated

Overrated or not, I would love to walk around with a US Open title, World title etc. That said, I've watched a few players that have great results that I don't get the "great feeling" from. For me Peach would top the list. He might win 5 more world titles, but I just don't get that feeling. If peach plays reyes, mika, ralf, shane, alex, thorsten, corey, archer, I could keep going, I don't feel Peach wins.

This thread keeping pro's from posting on AZ... if it is, can you imagine them doing an interview like golfers do after each round! So why did you suck today, what are you working on... Surely these pro players know people talk (good and bad) about them.

Its so true. They should stop stealing the spot light to let the real players play. These hacks just get in the way of the sport and are probably the reason pool is having a hard time right now. I think you forgot Strickland, Varner, etc.. etc.

Sorry, I'm getting absent minded

Chris,

I apologize for leaving your name off my list earlier in this thread of pros who post here that we're very appreciative of. You definitely belong in the first rank. And I went back and edited my original post to add your name. My oversight. And I promise it won't happen again. :)

I also should have mentioned Larry Nevel also as another one who I'm grateful that posts here. Larry sometimes takes heat for some of the ways he conducts himself, but he is without a doubt, a very talented and elite player. I like when he posts.

Too bad Dennis Hatch doesn't post like he did when he was campaigning for a spot on the Mosconi Cup. Danny Harriman comes & goes also.

Shawn Putnam, I like him and his game a lot. I wish he posted more.

But the top crew is, in nor particular order, Grady, Billy, Freddy the Beard, Jay, Chris Bartram, John Schmidt, Dick McMorran (SJD) and Larry Nevel. These are the regular contributers here and they are all very appreciated!

If I forgot any more, please forgive me.

i think gatz is misinformed to put it nicely.
i think everyone on his list is a great player.as for me being overated if someone said i was the best on earth or something that would be overating me.
i think im a solid player as is everybody else on that list.

anyway yes threads like this is why hardly any top player but me is dumb enough to hang around azb.

John would you like a hug? Id give you a hug!

Most overrated players

He caught a Melanie! And then a baby!

Thanks Blackballed ,

This part has nothing to do with blackballed it was said by someone else
Neils may not be some peoples favorite player to watch but if you think he's overrated grab a player and back him, I watched Neils go from a player Stormin Normans speed to the upper echelon of pool and it only seemed like a few years , maybe it was 6 or 7 but no more, what do you want from these people?

Jay,
You're right, I don't think Buddy & Jose ever matched up for $. They met in tournaments, but I don't recall ever having heard about them matching up.

I looked thru Buddy's biography by the late W.W. Woody. On page 278 it says "When Jose Parica came from the Philippines, Louie Roberts told him "You're a great champion. You can match up with any of the Americans, but don't mess with Buddy."

Jose followed Louie's advice. He played all the others, but he steered clear of Buddy's rifle."

I'm sure each side has their own version of who ducked who!

Wasn't it Buddy who, while commentating on a match, once described two other players who were supposed to match up but Buddy said "All they did was circle each other!" Then he laughed that good laugh of his.

Both of them in their prime....what a match!

i don't see nothing wrong with this. if your goal is to make cheddar then the softer the action the better

Because I think your overrated your saying you should leave this forum?

So everybody should agree with, suck up to, the pros that come on here that post? It's a forum, if you can't handle some flak or a simple difference in opinion with someone you shouldn't be on here to begin with.

Anytime someone mentions something about you don't like, you instantly get defensive and ask to play for thousands of dollars and remind everyone that you run 100's in 14.1 regularly. It's like you're insecure with something. Infact the only time I actually do see you participate in this forum is when someone mentions your name. It's either your way, or no way.

If someone for example, like you, gets good at a particular sport, gets a lot of media coverage etc... there will always be people critiquing your skills, professionalism etc...I'm not a "HATER", like some people call it. I just think your 9ball/10ball game is overrated. I would consider this a compliment because you get so much attention.

Someone asked a question about peoples opinion about whos overrated and I'm pretty much the only one to give a list of people that "I" think are overrated.

Everyone will come on here get mad, call me out, take your side, blah, blah, blah. Well sorry John, I'm not going to hang off your balls because you've achieved something many people will never accomplish in life. You and I should be treated no differently on this forum.

Why are you getting a rash hoss? You even said you were going to get flamed in your original list post. You dont want John Schmidt to defend himself on here? isnt that what you're doing (defending yourself)?

He won the 06 US Open 9 ball, so I'm thinking his rotation game is probably not all that overrated.

John Schmidt

I don't see why someone would call John Schmidt, or Dennis Orcullo, or Jose Parica overrated. I guess you could say Phil Mickelson is overrated .... I mean these guys play good! John has deigned to post on this forum from time to time, jousting with complete know-nothings (I meant to say idiots). Thanks John for being a good sport. The problem with pool is that this sport allows us to get so close to the stars that we see their warts. But John is a world class player, like many others on this ill-conceived overrated list. Pool "fans" are so weird!
