Most Overrated Players

i remember Parica at the Rack and Q in Tempe AZ in the late 90's and there was plenty of 'action' to be had. Again this was before threads, streaming video etc......but Parica sure didnt walk on water!

I'm going to get burned for writing down this list. But this is strictly my opinion and I'm not going to write down why I think each one is overrated just because it would make this thread a war. I have my own reasons why I think these players are overrated. This is just my opinion of who I think are over rated players. This is based primarily on 9ball 10ball skill. I would just like to add that I think you can still be one of the top players in the world and still be overrated.

In no particular order....

-Charlie Bryant
-Charlie Williams
-Dennis Orcollo
-John Schmidt
-Gabe Owen
-Corey Deuel
-Darren Appleton
-Marcus Chamat (Where has this guy been btw?)
-Propoolplayer (you watch any ustream pool you know who this guy is)
-Thorsten Hohmann
-Mike Dechaine
-Tony Drago
-Danny Harriman
-Raj Hundal
-Jasmin Ouschan
-Jeanette Lee
-Jose Parica
Almost forgot...
-Imran Majid (thanks to Jim for reminding me this one)
-Jeremy Jones
-Daryl Peach

All these players are great and I'm sure great people, but to me are all overrated some way or another in the game of 9ball/10ball.

Some of you might be wondering why I put Dennis on there. He is a great player and the best one on that list but he is still overrated to me because he is looked at like a "GOD" and everyone thinks hes the favorite in every tournament he enters. But he fails to get it done most of the time. Hes just a bit overrated in my opinion.

He is also called the number 1 player or money player in the world by many but once again still fails to get the cheese. For example Yang has beaten him twice for the cheese. Yangs probably the most underrated player I know.

Some of these players get "HYPED" up way to much.
Man. You are tough to please lol.

I think a guy could take that list against the field in any big tournament, bet every match and probably come out winner pretty easy.

As for over rated or not I think you could go on endlessly about stipulations or criteria for rating. End of the day all of the people on that list have performed under pressure to a high degree at one time or another.

I put a lot weight on WHO is doing the rating before I think about who is over or under rated.

While Yang may have beaten Dennis in a couple of exhibitions in shopping malls I havent heard of him going into the pool rooms in the Philippines to rob those helpless pinoys on a regular basis. Yang is good but so are a lot of other people. So I guess you could say I think based on your list I think Yang is over rated. :D

All the best players are overrated because they have many devoted fans. That's because they're really good you know. Especially if they play with a certain amount of "heart", call it what you will...

As great as they are, their fans become somewhat unrealistic and put them even higher on the ladder.

Being overrated has nothing to do with the players themselves. Only the fans are responsible for rating a player maybe a little too high.

Some fans of Efren Reyes actually believe that each and every one of his magical shots were 100% planned with 0% of luck involved. Of course he earned his luck, but that's not the point.

I'd love to be overrated.

Most overrated players

I'n your opinion who are some of the most overrated players that a lot of fans feel are great? Male or female.
Mine is Charlie Bryant. I'm sure he's a nice person and a pretty good player...but not great IMO. Johnnyt

I think Charlie is like a lot of top players ,
they work hard and struggle to get to the top of the hill and then find out there is little reward. I have seen Charlie play as good as anyone but the elite. He like many others has declined some in the last few years, One of the truly amazing stories is Johnny Archers coming back to the top, he was unbeatable for a time in the 80s and lost interest. I'd really like to ask him what motivated him again.

Buddy and Jose never played, the only man Buddy ever avoided. By 1990, Parica was off limits gambling for the rest of the pool world. NO ONE wanted any part of him! And he welcomed everybody! The greatest hustlers on the planet all drew the line at Jose. Mark Tadd - nothing doing! CJ Wiley - give me Efren instead! Johnny - Bustamante please! Buddy - I don't want to talk about it! Sigel and Strickland - CURED! Are you beginning to get the picture?

i heard at one point in the 80's im sure he said at a pro event, everybody has the 8 except for him. he was pointing at archer.

hmmm

My memory got jogged. Johnny and Jose played in the early 90's at Hard Times. Long races (maybe to 13 or 15) for $500 a set. And Parica had Ron Wiseman breaking for him (maybe a handicap?). Johnny won both sets on the hill. The nest year Johnny played his epic matches with Bustamante, where he ran 13 racks and won the first set only to have Bustie come back and win the next set. Johnny was willing to play anybody himself in those days. My bad!

David also would play anyone, even Jose. It wasn't like Jose didn't get games in the 80's. He was just winning almost all of them. I doubt Jose could have beaten David on a bar table if they played on one. David was the king there! By the 90's Jose's rep as the best money player alive was established. The bottom line for this thread - It's pretty hard to call Jose Parica over rated. Most followers of pool believe he belongs in the HOF, as do I.

He didn't walk on water, but he did have to give up weight.

Migosh, Terry

Jay,

....I'm sure each side has their own version of who ducked who!

Wasn't it Buddy who, while commentating on a match, once described two other players who were supposed to match up but Buddy said "All they did was circle each other!" Then he laughed that good laugh of his....

Darn it Terry, get it straight. The players Buddy was referring to were Artie Bodendorfer and Ronnie Allen. The quote he made was mine from a match I was commentating on. He just got a big kick out of it when he heard it and graciously repeated it for posterity.

Beard

BTW You can all forget about any sort of "OverRation" of Jose "Amang" Parica. He was as bad as he wannittobe.

Niels Feijen ,Tony drago, Daryl Peach and Danny Basavich (kid delicious)

I think they are ovverated, They good players, but not that great. they are just alright and thats pretty much it, and some of them are boring to watch on TV, for example Niels feijen, he spins the table a hundred times and is so slow player which bores me to death.

the 4 players mentioned above are bad for TV Tables imo.

Johnnyt, I have to say I think this is a bad idea for a thread. Who are we to criticize these guys and gals who play better than virtually all of us?

Not many pro players post here but some probably lurk. If I were a pro player and got named in this thread, it wouldn't make me think kindly of AZB'ers, even though it may have been only one person who named me.

I totally agree. Its threads like these that force pros away from AZ and I don't blame them. Everybody sits around here talking about how they think they are a "low level pro" and feeding their narcissistic personality. While if they had a little bit of respect maybe we can get answers straight from the pros instead of listening to most people on this forum that think they know what they are talking about. There are only a couple of pros left that post here and if I were one of them the response to this thread would be a deciding factor if I waste any more time here trying to help people. And for the brain surgeon that thinks either John Schmidt or Corey Deuel is overrated, PEOPLE WHO WIN US OPENS ARE NOT OVERRATED!!!!!!!! Just cause Buddy Hall isn't playing as well as he used to is he overrated? This thread sucks and if I was a moderator I would get rid of it!

Beard,
You sure don't sleep no pool facts! I'm slipping, as I could not pull that from my noggin. But, once you posted, it all came back. It WAS you who invented that memorable phrase! I laughed when I first heard it and I still giggled as I typed it!

You coined a good one Fred!

thanks

i think gatz is misinformed to put it nicely.
i think everyone on his list is a great player.as for me being overated if someone said i was the best on earth or something that would be overating me.
i think im a solid player as is everybody else on that list.

anyway yes threads like this is why hardly any top player but me is dumb enough to hang around azb.

I don't know how anyone can list someone who has won a US Open and run over 400 2x as "over-rated." HAHAHAHA

Wow, tough audience. Hey John... maybe you should put on a tutu and dance while patting your belly and chewing gum all at the same time. It's tough to impress, eh?

IMO, all the players above except one are great players. They know that there is little reward at the top but still find the time to practice so they can get part of the small pie.

The one I speak of is propoolplayer, this guy is the best player behind the PC. lol

Skip the tutu and dance part

Spidey,
I agree with your first paragraph 100%. Incredible how some people reason.

John, we sure do like having guys like you, Grady, Billy, Freddy, SJD, Jay, etc post here because you guys have lived something that many of us have just dreamed about. You guys have an insight into things that many of us don't have.

Plus, I mentioned to you before, the group of players I listed above would be just as appreciated if you guys hadn't been champion players. Because you guys are us. Now, I don't know if that scares you away or gives you the chills, but you guys also love our great sport. That's why you post here with us. We're your kin!

***Edited to add Chris Bartram to the above list of players.
