Snooker World No. 1 John Higgins in betting scandal

Hi,
This is horrible news for our sport. I'm disappointed with the loss of a great player and ambassador for Snooker. It's too bad that morality can be purchased so cheaply.:frown:

It sure looks like Higgins won't be inducted to Cooperstown any time soon.

Does anyone know the potential criminal implications of this for him over there? I mean, the loss of future income may be the least of his worries.

It's been said that everyone has a price. And they found his!

I think if they had offered him say 50,000 or maybe 100,000 he would have turned them down or tried to negotiate a better deal. We'll never know. He went for it hook, line and sinker.

Banned players

Should every player be banned that has bumped or split there would be very few left to do battle. But they should be banned. For life. For the good of the sport. Here and there.
But this situation may have been differant. When the choices are loose and take money or die there is nothing to consider.

At least I'll say this for snooker, they have a ruling body and they take this stuff seriously. I suspect Higgins' career will come to an end if this is found to be true.

Maybe he will move to the USA and take up 9 ball.

Its being done

I think we in the pool world have to admit that its not new to have 2nd tier players betting against themselves and throwing matches, especially with the inconsistency of award money payouts. What is amazing is to have someone at the championship level get into this. A real shame. We all want better for the sport. A world champion but obviously not world class.

It's not being reported that he actually did fix a match. In the UK that would carry criminal charges and yes, possibly (even likely) jail time.

If all he did was enter into an agreement to fix a match then it could be argued that it's conspiracy, but that would be a matter for the law in the place where the video was shot.

Edit: I think anyways. European laws are not my forte.

He has a few million in the bank already through his winnings so in terms of finances he is already set up for life.

His manager has already resigned his position on the WPBSA Board, if that doesn't spell guilty I do not know what does.

The Board may have demanded that he step down, as to not sully their image. It seems like a fairly logical thing to do.

In the video I didnt hear any threats. Not even veiled ones. Doesnt mean they were not made off camera of course but I have seen people who were in real fear for their well being make deals. Those guys weren't it.

Of course they are British so maybe a complete lack of emotion is hereditary. :D

He screwed up.

What was he suppose to be in the Ukraine for anyways?

The whole thing was a sting operation conducted by a British tabloid magazine - News of the World. According to the articles there were several preliminary meetings with Higgins' manager in Scotland, Mooney. The reporters pretended to be businessmen organizing a snooker tour of Europe. It all culminated in this videotaped meeting.

I find it interesting and a little disturbing that the magazine conducted this sting involving major corruption on it's own without involvement from law enforcement.

It's possible this was done in the Ukraine because of legalities in the UK.

How many years did Quinten Hann get?

8 years and fined 10,000 pounds

Would love to hear the complete story from News of The World, not one of your more reputable yellow sheets.
What caused them to set up a sting of Higgins, complete with video?
Did they draw his name out of a hat or did they have some good reason for suspicion?
How was he lured to the Ukraine?

If true, he sold himself cheap.
First prize at the World Championship is 250,000 pounds.
A 147 is worth 147,000 pounds.
Lots of prize money available for a guy like Higgins at the top of the game.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the Wanted/For Sale section:

"One of a kind snooker player for sale. Great player, terms negotiable. Cash only, no trades. PM me with offers."

When I first read about it I had hoped what Higgins said was true and he was going along to get out of a scary situation. Then I watched the video.

My understanding is this was an undercover story set up by a tabloid. If that is indeed the case then Higgins is talking to a reporter not a gangster. I haven't heard how old this tape is and whether this "sting" was taken to the point of exchanging money and dumping a match, or if they just got this meeting on video and went public with it with no actual execution of the plan. Do we know when the video was taken and if the event they are referring to has subsequently taken place?

Well, if this was a meeting with an undercover reporter I doubt any threats were suggested by the journalist since duress of any kind would discredit the entire story. Now, whether or not Higgins actually perceived danger is another issue. Obviously he is claiming he did.

I'm wondering too what prompted this sting, maybe they chose him because he is the current champ and figured it would get the most attention???

wow, just wow

Do you think when the guy gets caught robbing the liquor store, it is his first time committing a crime of that nature or just his first time getting caught?
