After a longer than planned layoff for numerous reasons we are back this Thursday with TAR Podcast #46. Mark Griffin and I will go over our thoughts on the year in pool 2013, discuss some future things coming up this year and break down TAR 38 Appleton vs Orcollo.

Personally I think 2013 was a year that will be looked back upon as a watershed moment. Somethings we had last year will never be again. This could be a good or bad thing. I have my thoughts and I know Mark does. We will get into all of it Thursday.

If you have any topics or comments you think we should talk about please post up. We hope everyone will check it out.

Looking forward to it.

Q: should the BCA be "fixed" or should the BCA be replaced?

Q: CJ Wiley made a comment that he is spending lots of money and time trying to cycle pro pool back into the public eye.
Is pro pool actually ready to be back in the public eye, or would his (or anyone's)efforts be better spent fixing all of pro pools underlying problems FIRST ?

It seems to me that any kind of positive publicity, whether it be a new movie, a celebrity endorsement, or even a million dollar quilting bee, would basically equate to lipstick on a pig at this point.

Good news. The more podcasts the better. Guys, I'm still very interested in volunteering at the 2014 U.S. Bar Table Championships.

Q: Would it benefit either one of you for me to be available one or two days before and/or after the the tournament? I imagine setting up and/or down takes a lot of time. Want to book my trip ASAP.

Q; Will there be any fees related to spectating the 2014 U.S. Bar Table Event. If memory serves me correctly, I thought it was free.

Q: Is there any way possible to continue the U.S. Open 10B and 8B Events? I would love to see these events continue heading towards the 25th Annual, 50th Annual or 100th U.S. OPEN One-Pocket, 10B and 8B. Mark, I greatly appreciate all your efforts. I believe you feel the same as I do.

Q: Justin, any chance we can get Shane vs. Busty or Alex. I think Busty usually plays in the Swanee which would put him close by. You can't go wrong with these three.

Q: Are either one of you going to the Derby?

I hope I will be able to help you guys out. Will PM both of you if I don't hear anything on the podcast.

"Every player will be required to be available for free group lessons/instruction on various aspects of the game. We are only going to be working with players that have shown respect to the game, their opponents, and the fans."
Excellent idea. Maybe expand on this idea a bit.

.Pro Pool basically needs a "Chapter 11" - reorganization

Looking forward to it.

The future looks very bright and it's nice to have TAR working to help make this happen.

Q: Do you think the location of current events is part of the problem with today's tournaments?

Q: How do you feel about the Diamond 10 footers being in future events?

Q: Do you think more events, such as the US Bar Table Championship and White Diamond's Super 9ball, would be healthy for the tournament scene?

Q: Do you have any TAR patches left? lol :)

Question for Mark and Justin. Do you feel Mark Wilson would be a good choice for the MC captain? What do you think of sending Shane with four young guns like Oscar to the cup this year? at this point results can't be any worse than the past year or much worse than the last 7 years where we won once. When I read this I was also thinking what a great concept. I'm also looking forward to hearing more.

Quick question for Justin; whats your most memorable TAR moment?

Cheers and I'm really looking forward to the Podcast, my wife has 20 shows on TV she watches and PVR's, I have 2, so any thing to do with pool I get excited.

Q: Can 2014 be the year that US pool promoters put aside their differences and get together to discuss the current status of pro pool? Understand this, I'm not suggesting setting up a tour or having everyone adjust dates of their pro events. Or even making any real decisions for that matter. But a private discussion about the issues of pool and how each individual leader has navigated these issues. Pro pool has thrived for many years without a tour. It can still do well without a tour (SVB had a very profitable year without BB). There's no reason that promoters should need to set dates or anything like that. There are too many variables in that. But, they should be able to work together on as many issues as possible. We seem to be wanting the players and the BCA (business industry [and among themselves, they are each competitors, yet work as a team]) to be team players. We need our promoters to be our leadership.

My comment/suggestion: Leaders should lead! Get together to discuss issues once a year in a retreat format. If needed each could agree that all conversations remain private. The group's objective could be as simple as learning from one another and bettering the sport of pool. Or the group could initiate a loosely worded code of conduct and expectation for players, promoters and fans. Either way, all of these three groups (including myself as a fan) are to blame for the MC team's conduct and performance.

I believe that leadership must be willing to lead and set the example. Give us all a "road to follow" so that pool can move reach its potential. It has long been obvious that the BCA is now a trade organization. We can't change that. Actually, it is not in the sport's best interest that a games industry control the pro sport. They will always put their business interest above that of players, promoters, and fans. The sport needs their support, just like their industry can benefit from a strong professional sport. But we need a group of American leaders to lead professional pool in America.

Can't wait to hear the podcast. I always appreciate Mark's ideas and perspective on issues concerning American pro pool. He is always passionate, honest (sometimes brutally so), and willing to lead.

Respect, Courage, and Commitment!

Well I am definitely looking forward to hearing some talk about the Chinese 8-ball. The game itself, the difficulty of the tables and how if affected the outcomes (if at all), the new twist of a timed match and not a set race length and whether this is good or bad, and whether or not it is something that might actually have some success in America, ultimately it is 8-ball which is the most popular game in America, it uses American sized balls, and simply has different tables/pocket size. Other then the name of the game and the tight pockets the game is not really a foreign concept to pool players and fans in America.

With regards to pro events at the Rio at the BCAPL Nationals, I think you yourself have a huge opportunity to get in some things like a single Chinese 8-ball table, put it in a public area, and get a few exhibition matches on the table to expose the game to America and get some feedback on how people like seeing the game live. Let some people shoot on the table between the exhibitions and see just how tough it is. I could see the table being a fairly popular place for people to match up in the "Action pit" and thus people get to see how some top amateurs handle the conditions.

i'll post for KRYPTO -

In case anyone else here in the USA missed the news, the 2014 Asian Games, the largest sporting event in Asia, decided to drop all cue sports from their schedule for the 2014 Games in Incheon, South Korea.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) decided that the eight non-Olympic sports in the 2014 competition would be baseball, ten-pin bowling, cricket, kabaddi, karate, sepak takraw, squash and wushu. This resulted in roller sport, chess, cue sports, softball, dancesport and dragon boat being dropped from the list.

These competitions have been an important part of billiards competition for some time now, and I am very disappointed in the OCA's decision.

If this has been previously posted, my apologies for reposting. I was researching a billiard-based vacation where I will spend quite a bit of money, but now, I will most certainly spend it somewhere other than in Incheon.

It seems, as Earl Strickland said in his Sky Sports Interview, Pool is dying. Earl seems to be very angry about it, and many of the rest of us are as well. But being angry won't stop this trend. Read AZ's 2013 year-end summary and see where our sport is heading. It may just shock you. Let's embrace what we do have and appreciate those individuals that promote our Sport.

Question: Regarding the Mosconi Cup, can you give your thoughts on how the conventional wisdom from 2012 to 2013 could have changed so much?

Post 2012 Mosconi Cup conventional wisdom:
- JA is god. He dominated on the table (6-0) and was an amazing leader off the table. Everyone looks up to him. It was like having two captains (JA and CJ).
- The young guns could not handle the pressure. We need experienced players.

Post 2013 Mosconi Cup conventional wisdom:
- JA is not a leader. Bad choice as Captain.
- The experienced players are not cutting it. We need young guns.

A lot has also been said about the USA team being a bunch of individuals, not a team. But apparently it was the exact same way years ago when they were winning each year.

All of this makes me think maybe the real problem is simply that the Euro players have a practice schedule / work ethic (and financial support structure that allows it) that the USA players don't have.
