This is a very good move in this economy by Barry and will insure the US Open will continue for many years to come IMO. Johnnyt

And a couple more important tidbits from Barry's recent letter on AZ's home page:

As I stated recently, every player will be paid fully in cash before leaving town...

Lastly, I am excited to announce that Mark Griffin and myself are working together to have an amateur event Wednesday-Saturday in the Marriott ballroom during the week of the Open. We are both equally excited and a press release will be coming soon from Mark and the B.C. A. Pool League with details of this event

I wonder what kind of amateur event he's looking at. I wouldn't think it would be league related, but what do I know..

i hate to be negative. But, I believe its too little too late!!!!!!

Repairing the US Open name and reputation as the premier tournament in the USA is Not going to happen. Bugsy Promotions sent players over the last few years with a bad outcome!!!!

International players are not going to chance any future problems and will choose not to attend. Especially, given the expenses!!!!!

They really should change the name to the Mid Atlantic Open!!! Because who from any distance away is going to chance it?????

Although the Open's name has been tarnished by slow pay, Barry has always paid - from what I've heard. I'm sure he'll soon make good on the remaining payouts from last year.

I think if Barry convinces the players he will pay cash on the spot for this upcoming Open (perhaps by escrowing?), most of the world's best players will attend.

I don't know of any other more powerful pool accreditation than "He's a US Open Champion."

Barry will make it happen, even in the worst of times.

KK9L, You know I love ya and dont mean to be the technicality douche bag, but I believe that once someone is a US Open Champion, that's what they are for life. Its either one-time US Open Champion or the 2005 US Open Champion, but never former US Open Champion. Sorry, just had to say it, lol.

Ok then fine. I edited it AND took out the trash Dad. ;)

Good point Beav, and no - I honestly don't think you're half the douche bag that Justin claims (behind your back of course). ;) J/K!

On the contrary.....

Kid:

I must disagree with your statement about foriegn players will think twice about coming.

There have only been 4 Non-American players to win the US Open; 2 European, 2 Phillipino.

There are many other foreign players who would love the chance to win the longest running men's professional 9 Ball event in history!

As far as the boys from Bugsy, I remember an issue from last year's Open but it was not brought up until after the match was over. The player should have brought it up at the time when it occured.

We still have some great foreign players that deserve to win this event.

Bustamante comes to mind for one.

Lowering the prize money is not a good thing, don't think we should applaud that!

Guaranteeing people leave with the cash is a good thing, we should applaud that.

Only time will tell what the tourney field is going to look like for this year. I'd expect to see the usual players in attendance, it's usually a pretty good time to come to the states and stay a while.

What was the previous added money, if it has now been lowered to 50k? And to make a fair comparison, did the previous added money include money not going to the players, but going to the sanction fees instead? And the new 50k added all goes to the players, with a separate and additional pot used for the sanction fees?

Last year it was $80k added I believe. So it has been lowered, as has the entry fee from $600 to $500. However, Barry previously stated this year would be a $40k guarantee added, so it has been bumped up from that #.

The added $$$ that was advertised all went to the prize fund. Barry pays the sanctioning fees out of his own pocket.

Mika, from what I heard, is paid in full. This kind of created the problem. Barry has usually worked out a pay schedule with the champion, which allowed him to get everyone else paid, but Barry & Mika aren't exactly best buds and Mika wanted his money.

I will be going! Since they are talking about prize money, it doesn't effect me. I am guessing 200+ entries again this year.
