What pool halls do you want to visit?

Mikjary...There's a poster here that might know a LITTLE about North Shore Billiards Club. He goes by Freddy the Beard...and he OWNED that club!:grin:

In Chicago I remember a private room called The North Shore Billiards Club. You had to drop a few names to get past the doorman. First time I went there was a who's who of world champions and road players sitting on the walls sweating Louie Roberts giving the 7 ball to a guy from Detroit for $1K sessions. I think I even tripped over Mike Sigel, but it was late. I heard stories about it being raided by the cops from time to time, too. Anybody else been there?

All Gone Now...

In Detroit's west side a 2ND floor walk up on Michigan Ave near Martin Ave in the late 50's. Wood floors and spittoons. Mostly snooker tables.

Again, Detroit's west side, George and Boris's pool room on the first corner street west of Livernois and McGraw streets. First place I played at about 16?

Last but not least...The Grand Daddy of them all. The Rack and Cue around 9 mile and Coolidge rd? Oak Park MI I believe. Cornbread Red, Freddie Salem and many other legends.

All gone now...

I would like to Re-visit Starchers in Akron, Ohio back from around 1983 to 1990!! Akron Open (Earl won it 8+ times), Shamrock Shootout and Ohio State Open. 1 dollar per hour pool time!! Lots of action in those days..

Fargo Billiards. Looks amazing, need to go there one day

Amsterdam Billiards in New York. Will be there in less than 3 weeks, can't wait :)

Hollywood Billiards or Hard Times Billiards, not sure if this is one or two poolhalls. Located in Los Angeles. On my to do list.

Victoria Riley's in London, England. Raj Hundal, Imran Majid, Tony Drago and Ronnie O'Sullivan plays there. Hopefully the Mosconi Cup will be in London next year so it is possible to visit Victoria at the same time.

One Side J & Billiards café, Manila, Philippines. Efren, Bustamante, Gomez, Pagulayan, Orcullo, Alcano, Van Corteza +++ can be seen in action every single day here. This is THE place every poolplayer should visit once in their life. Been there a couple of times and can't wait to go there again.

it is SO funny, as an acquaintance of mine once put it.... "you could turn hard times upside-down, shake it as hard as you can, and about 18 dollars would fall out"

of course there is an occasional bug money game, but mis-perceptions really are the rule here it seems.

True, action at Hardtimes is overrated. Not that there aren't great players there, just that they don't match up all too often.

that goes for that whole state.
the rack in detroit i wish i was born back then.
i would be able to gamble like i like to.

You missed Julians!....

Visited all of the above, except maybe Guys & Dolls, probably did, but not sure.

Jim

Guys and Dolls was on the same street as 7-11 but a couple blocks away. What i remember most was that you had to walk up a very wide staircase from street level. I do not remember a Julians.
Oh yeah 711 was the street address of 7-11.

If you happen to be passing thru Europe......

there is a fine room in Amsterdam.......Pool & Snooker Centrum Bavaria. 25 9', 7 snooker and 1 billiard table. Nice bar and they have decent cues for visiting players who have neglected to bring their own (not one piece house cues) at no charge I may add.

Ditto! I loved making the 45 minute drive down there.

I would have liked to had seen Ames' and 7-11, unfortunately that was before my time. I did get to see Julian's though. I have to say, of the past rooms in New York City, Chelsea Billiards would rank highest on my list. That place was without a doubt THE player's room. After that, I would put Amsterdam Billiards' old eastside location second.

Hardtimes - Bellflower.

the home of champions and sidebetters that dont pay cus they arent talented enough to make it any other way.

truth is thought the new owner is great and it has the potential to really take off under him. he stands up for the players and wont take no shite with respect to people not payin and stuff.

First and foremost on the list: FARGO BILLIARDS, FARGO, N.D.

JoeyA

Thanks Joey.

If people are looking for a little road trip, we've got a great tournament weekend coming up in a couple weeks (Jan 15-17). We paid out over $11,000during our November tournament, and I think this one will be bigger.

All on 7' diamonds

9-ball Friday nite & finish Saturday
8-ball Saturday & finish Sunday

Details on the link at www.fargobilliards.com

If I could turn back time and bring back any pool hall for all of you to come soak in for the action, history, and tradition, it would be Bensinger's in Chicago. I've had many interesting experiences there back in my youth.

For anyone interested, here's a short old news article about Bensinger's:

http://www.3cushion.com/On Line Collection/Newspaper.htm

As an interesting aside, the basement of the office building at Clark/Broadway/Diversey where Bensinger's located to from the downtown spot was also the location of Herman Rambow's shop, which was up on the 2nd or 3rd floor if I recall.
