What Tournament that no longer exists do you miss???????

Wagon Wheel Tournaments

I miss the Atlanta Wagon Wheel Tournaments. They were usually run by Railroad John or Floyd Baxter and were great events. They filled up 128 man fields on bar table events and had the pros come in for the PBA events on the 9 footers also. They set it up with bleachers and Mike Massey often did trick shot exhibitions. That place really brought the players and gamblers in. Keith and Johnny were always in big action with someone during them. That is where Cliff Joiner came out of nowhere playing all comers. I bet you could fill hundreds of pages of posts just from peoples memories about those Wagon Wheel events. It was the closest thing to a Hustlers Jamboree that the late 80's and early 90's saw.

The Miller Lite World Series of Tavern Pool was one of my all time favorites. I don't remember ever seeing so many geat players in one spot.
The money was great and the qualifiers were just unbelievable. I went two consecutive years at a cost of about $30.00. I'll never forget it.

The Corpus Christi Classic 9-ball tournament that was held for 3 consecutive years at Paradise. They quit having it when they found out they could host IPT qualifiers instead. Now Paradise doesn't have anything going on because the IPT is dead.

I MISS THE CORPUS CHRISTI 9-ball CLASSIC!

I miss this one too. I think Harrison just ran out of enrgy with it. To his credit, the man sure tried hard and was a great host. A beautiful pool room.

I'm gonna call Harrison tomorrow and see if I can fire him up again.

If youve never been to the Stardust tournaments in the 70's you missed a great event. Everyone was there. Lots of action in a great city for action. I miss it!

Tournaments I miss

I miss any tournament that I can win. They just don't exist anymore. LOL

Red's in Houston was always a great event. Johnson City, also.

Tournaments

I miss the RAKM UP Classic 9 Ball tournament that was held at the Sheraton Convention Center in Columbia, SC. I live in SC and it was the closest big 9 ball tournament that I could go to, but not just because it was close to where I live it was a great tournament and if it had a promoter like Barry Berman who runs the US Open there's no telling where it would be today. I enjoyed going to that tournament a lot and now my favorite tournament is Barry's US Open in Chesapeake, Va. I look forward to going to Virginia to the US Open all year and I have a blast every time I go.

i agree the wagon wheel was great, but you fail to mention the kid to young to play in tourny, but was cleaning all on the side[ DOUGH BOY] the SHANNON DALTON of today i think he was 13-14 yr the wife and i was there for a few, great place. lot of gamble , and action !!!

The Brass Tap & Billiards Raleigh Open
Strickland, Hall, Archer, Davenport, Joyner, Watson, Tadd, Kennedy, Mataya, Hatch, Ellin, Coltrain, Bollman, and many more would stack the field. Calcutta was high too, like $1000-2000 blind bids

action all night...North VCarolina in its hayday was grand

Corey hit a lot of them on the head with his list:

CrownCityCorey
"The Shogun of Harlem!"

I miss:

LA Open
Bicycle Club Invitationals
Hard Times Open(s)
Hollywood Billiards Open
Glass City Open
IPT Tourneys
Reno Open (June)
WPC (on US Soil)
Mark Betor Classic
The Las Vegas Open (Hopkins production. Pro Event during APA Nationals in Vegas).
Camel Pro-Billiards Tour

Besides the IPT, the ones I miss were the old Dufferin tournaments in Canada. The champions in each division got beautiful embroidered coats with the date, your name and the location you won at on the front, and the huge multi-colored logo on the back. I still have mine. It was funny because in the one I won, Dan Louie won the men's division on the bar boxes, and I won the ladies' division where we played on the big tables at the same time the men were relegated to the 8 footers! :p

I would have really loved to have gone to the legendary Johnson City tournaments. :(

Well considering my forum name, it'll be no surprise that it's all of the old one pocket tournaments that I miss.......One that I miss that hasn't been mentioned is the original U.S. Open one pocket tournament that was held at the Billiards Playground in Kalamazoo, MI throughout the 1990's.....I've got good memories of watching Bugs play in those tournaments, and also a few champions that, sadly, aren't with us anymore - Cornbread, Cookie Monster, and Gary Spaeth.

The Glass City Open. Thanks to The IPA and Kevin T. All he did was ruin the smaller tournaments with his "promises" of big payoffs.

While replying to another thread about famous Earl quotes it got me to thinking. What tournaments do you miss that are no longer done and why. please tell some stories to make this thread interesting.

Mine would have to be the old B.C. Open that was promoted and run by a very nice man named Gary Pinkowski. May he rest in eternal peace. What i liked about his tournaments was that he held tournaments for both men and women at the same time at the Holiday Inn in Binghamton NY. It was usually held at the same time as the B.C. Open pro Golf tournament. And a lot of times the pro golfers would come by and chat with the spectators and players. That is where I 1st met Fuzzy Zoeller and Lee Trevino. Like a lot of pool players, both were approachable and would gladly sign autographs for anyone who asked.......Boy what a tournament venue. To bad no one else can get it going again........................mike

I agree that was a great tournament! Boy does that bring back memories; I think Loree Jon owned that event, she won 3 times in a row if my memory serves me correctly.
I really enjoyed the US Open when the women played along side the men. I always enjoyed watching the men play before my own match. I always seem to mimic their stroke.

Wow, Has It Been 31 Years ALREADY ?

I miss:
The New Orleans 8-Ball Championship.

Each week for sixteen weeks, at bars around New Orleans, an Open 8-ball tournament was held on 3 1/2'x7' and 4'x8' tables (with slow cloth and big cueballs).

Then, the 16 weekly winners at each location played in a tournament where 1st Place won entry into the 'A' division, 2nd Place won into the 'B' division and 3rd won into the 'C' Division. I came in 1st in the playoffs and played in the 'A' Division.

I first played Buddy Hall in 1976 in the 'A' division (I was illuminated). There were a number of well know players in the 1976 'A' Class Division and I believe that JAM has a publication (The National Billiard News???) that lists the players. I can't remember who won in '76.

The following year, Gene "The Mighty Glove" Catron won the 'A' Division by beating everyone and making it look easy. All the best players (and there were quite a few) in New Orleans and from around the south played in these tournaments. They were held at the Marriott Hotel ballroom downtown and local news crews filmed for the local news. Trophies, cash, hats and patches were given away.

I miss that tournament and the many players that are no longer with us. It was only a block from Bourbon Street and many of the players preyed on the tourists in French Quarter bars with tables.

Edited to add: This wasn't any type of bar League, it was sponsored by either T.A.C. Amusement or Lucky Coin, the companies that supplied the coin tables to nearly ALL New Orleans 5,000 bars. Bob Mims presented the Awards.

This was such a good thread I have to move it back to the top.

I miss The Governors Cup in Columbus, OH

But mostly I miss the local tournaments from back home around Cleveland, OH.

Pool Rooms like:

Chandley's Chalk & Cue
Carousel Lanes
CueBall Charley's
Slam Jam's
Chagrin Valley Billiards / Northfield Billiards

Oh, and the ?? Jolly's ?? tournaments that Denny Stewart used to run.

There was also a great tournament in Toledo at Ship-n-Shore. It was on Bar Boxes.
