You-tube ripping us off must read

I can't wait til I'm at a tournament (playing), watch a match or two in between mine, and a player before each shot asks everyone watching for a quarter.....

I mean, his/her artistic talents are on display, and they are definitely worthy of compensation to show said skills....why shoot until until you get paid!!!???

It all sounds like a fine and dandy way for a few more billiards enthusiasts (those setting up the websites...etc.) to make money from the game, but other than that....

I'm still not sure how "the game" is helped by the players getting a few more dollars in their pocket?

Funny you brought this up...there's a match (on YouTube, GASP!) between Efren and I think Bustamante where the streamer actually mentions that apart from the prize money (about $1,500), they were "passing a hat" for contributions to up the ante for the players...so it is being done in some places.

Erica is good for the game

Erica works extremely hard trying to promote pool and survive being with a true gambling pool player who usually has the worst of it in most gambling matches. Of course we all wish her well and hope pool can survive but most pool players should settle for a decent job thanks to Internet and cell phones.

Work smart, not hard.

You are, imo, breaking the rules clearly posted by Mike regarding AZ Billiards forums :

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=199538

I think you should stop using AZ to promote your business. I will refrain from asking you to improve your writing and word use, but hope someone does.

Dave

I finally got their video to work of their 'chat'. I got thru 5 minutes of rambling by some guy saying everyone on AZ is not as smart as him --- if someone is going to say they are smarter than me, they should be able to pronounce the word intellectual correctly.

That guy is the world reknowned Jason Buffalo Hunt.

He once beat the cook at a poolroom out of 20 games, at double or nothing. "Do the math".

11 + pages of posts and I'll be honest, all I did was read the OP's post. and this is my reply. Who knows how this thread morphed in 11 pages ... no matter this is in response to the first post.

Stop posting pool videos huh? I don't post them, but they are instructive and entertaining to watch.

Youtube makes money on these? Holy Shit are you kidding? It can't be! That's not right! .. You must be a democrat. God forbid a company makes money providing a service.

Yeah lets cut off our noses to spite our faces so no one benefits from the videos, and as a byproduct pool gets less press, and damn youtube for making money in their business. The nerve.

And on a related note ... can you imagine supermarkets making a profit off those cans of Campbell soup they put on sale and stuff under our noses on the end displays?

Those bastards don't care about how much sodium is in a can of that soup. What are they doing for our salt intake? They shouldn't be making a profit on that.

Don't worry ... Hillary will fix everything for you.

I used to couldn't spell intellectual and now I are one.

Excluding content from the largest and first destination for video content is a death sentence for anyone who thinks that they can do better without it.

Content owners can and should do whatever they think is best with their content. Players who want to be paid royalties or a portion of ad revenue should negotiate that with content producers and refuse to be recorded without a contract in place.

But restricting already recorded matches isn't the way to go IMO. Google's payouts for ads shown before videos play or clicks on ads around videos is tiny and if your videos aren't in the tens of millions of views the money isn't enough to buy lunch. So honestly the exposure gained by presenting pool is worth far more to the industry as a whole than it can ever be to any individual's bank account from ad revenue.

Making everything PPV will essentially end up with extremely low PPV buys. I have to be EXTREMELY motivated to buy a pool match to watch later. I don't disagree totally either with the idea of making it PPV but just wanted to point out the reality that this isn't going to much money if any in player's pockets either.

I can say that as a sponsor I am far more likely to sponsor an event where the content will be freely available at some point so that my logo will have the chance to be seen by more people for a longer time. Depending on the sponsorship cost of course.

Okay I have waited to weigh in on this so I'm gonna try to takes this to a constructive place.

YouTube NEEDS to be involved. How can you get new people interested in pool if they watch Florian Kohler on YouTube and then have to pay for streams and videos next? The first person who actually starts a legit YouTube channel for pool matches, action, stories, funny stuff, commentary etc has an actual chance of promoting and making money.

Here is a thought, how many matches go uncommentated on YouTube because they are foreign? You don't have to do live commentary to do pool commentary, in fact a well rehearsed and thought out commentary between two people or even one can be entertaining. There are all these instructional videos but how awesome would it be if Scott Frost told us what he was thinking during a game or an out after the fact. How many tips of english, shot selection etc. The same goes for guys like Darren, Shane, Alex etc. Even if they themselves didn't explain it and somebody else did that would be awesome. Women's pool in the late 90's and early 2000s did an awesome job of "She is going to use low, left hand english to spin 2 rails..."

Its not in the best interest of the streamers to have matches posted on YouTube, nor should they be expected to do so. However, if there was a "network" or "community" channel that posted videos from multiple channels and that promoted them individually it would be a great thing for the game. Genipool is an excellent example although ad rev is copyright touchy which is the other part of the problem. Everybody would have to play nice in order for something like this to work.

Advertisers pay youtube based on the amount of views of their ads.

You can make a "you.pool.com" site if you want but good luck finding any advertisers willing to pay anyone for videos that at best get a couple thousand views.

There was a big fuss a while back when nintendo got every "let's play" video of their games removed from youtube because they didn't think it was fair that some guys in their basement made $15 a month playing their games. The guys who made those videos and all their followers just decided to boycott anything nintendo and all it got nintendo was loss of people doing free advertising for their games. I can't count the amount of games i've bought after watching someone else play on youtube or twitch.

My daughter watches videos of other girls playing with their toys obsessively. Now she makes her own. Those toy companies could not DREAM of better advertising then having actual customers making videos of themselves enjoying the products and those channels getting popular ON YOUTUBE.

Removing yourself from where the action is is like saying you aren't going to rent a store in the busiest mall around because the owner of the mall gets rich off the rent. Instead you locate to some obscure place that no one knows about and wonder why there is no business.

I get SO MUCH BUSINESS from our youtube videos that I can't imagine what it was like before youtube. And I am not even using the platform to the full potential.

I have been streaming pool since 2008 and many of my recordings are on YouTube. My purpose for streaming when I got involved as a hobby was to give back to the game that has given me much enjoyment but since has grown into a bit more.

I have put my videos on YouTube because there they will get the most exposure. As far as making money, it is tough to do when most videos on there can't be monetized as they have background music which leads to copyright issues. Videos end up being blocked in other countries, muted or just not able to be viewed.

You are wrong about players not making money off of them because these days most sponsors are sold a sponsorship deal for an event with the live stream and video recording being replayed online. So the added money for events is what the players are getting, without the live streaming some events would not have the monies they do. I know some events I stream have added money based on the fact of the exposure of the live stream, the replay on YouTube will generate twice as many views as the live feed in just a few months also.

The problem is pool players are constantly asking where is the money thinking they are being robbed and exploited but truth is there is no money or very little. Certain events/tournaments do smoke and mirrors and take a bunch of money out and funny business. The focus should be on events/tournaments being transparent with monies because added money is not always so. When I do an event the content is the property of the events that has hired me and if they want it for their own usage or ask me to put it online then that is what I do.

And the winner is...

Here you are, all like: Hey, let's bring something new to the table. Let's try to make this a product worth paying for.

Well done.

As far as money is concerned it equates to about $5 per 1,000 views. I have well over a million views on YouTube so that equals about $5,000 in ad revenue from them but guess what, most of my videos have background music in it so I can't make money off of them. I would literally have to mute the audio on videos to make money off of them.

Idiots.

SIMPLE! Band together with a bunch of websites that share a same objective and share the same user base. Such as what currently happens online with Ustream. Everyone on Ustream has the same username and password to watch live online. So to simply MOVE FORWARD, with a private platform for billiards, is to create it. It has been created. Here is a list of the websites that currently are a part of this movement.

www.crazyerica.com
www.onsitepool.tv
www.spacecityopen.com
www.thetornadoopen.com
www.gulfcoastwomenstour.com <under custruction>
www.pistolperez.com
www.snapregionaltour.ca <under construction>
www.feltcam.com <DIY HD Video Streaming from your pool room>

You mean you are trying to take my user base and viewer base and subscriber base from me. This is MY network I built through YEARS of extensive hard work. It doesn't matter if you go down to Texas to make 2 streams a year unless you are working on doing streams every weekend leaving your family you will never achieve any type of results like I have.

I've been a conceptual genius since we started Zach, I've done all the streaming for the most part 90% of it. I know what works and I know what doesn't. I know you are a great coder and good website designer. I already have the 5000 videos in my Netflix of pool library and a great start on a membership base. You ARE NOT in any way shape or form going to start a secondary subscription business and expect to charge people for your side of the network and then my platform in addition. I already told you I want to revenue share but you want to be a jackass and keep splitting up the traffic.

This post would of much better suited bringing up the previous thread we had years ago the principals are still the same instead of ranting and yelling like crazy.

Now if you excuse me you lovely peopleI gotta drive 6 hours to produce a 3 day stream for $100.

But he was not smart enough to collect after each game or post up?

Since all the streaming geniuses are here in one place - can one of you tell me how to get YouTube from muting or blocking my stream cause of background music from the jukebox? Do I need to host on my own platform or is there a way to fight it? The song already got paid for when it played on the jukebox.
