knows so little about what? pool players don't chop people up? is it that unheard of?

Not all pool players are degenerates. Neither of these young ladies has ever done anything to even hint that they would do such a thing. I know Melinda and think I know enough about Borana to say that neither would ever consider doing such a thing - ever. Labeling someone as being one that dumps can be extremely detrimental to a persons reputation so unless you have hard evidence of someone doing such a thing, you don't even joke about it, let alone say something so flippant in a serious manner as you did.

just because you're betting 2k doesn't really mean you're stepping to the next level. it just means you're betting higher

I'm not arguing your point, just seeing things from a different perspective.

The $2K doesn't make you better, but factor in the experience. She'll experience the feeling & grind of not losing her own money. She'll experience the pressure of every shot, no matter how seemingly insignificant. If she's never played under pressure like this before, with this much to lose, then in my opinion she's certainly stepping up to the next level. She may not play on another level of skill, but she'll certainly be playing on a higher level of pressure.

Betting $2G's on a match when you aren't a world class player, don't have a 6 figure income, and have never bet nearly that much in your life, can be very scary & intimidating. Doing it for the first time certainly is stepping up a level. In all the matches & games & money I have lost, 90% were due to weak nerves & pressure, not my skill level. I would imagine that's the case with most players.

When I was single & had a certain predictable, often disposable income, i'd bet $500-$1000 if I thought I had a good chance. I lost a lot of money, I won a lot of money, prolly even in the end. I played better then than I ever did. Once responsibilities came, like caring for a wife & children, making that mortgage payment every month, etc, my betting seized. Now if I play for anything over $100 I get the jitters & my game shows it. I still have the playing skills. I know more about the game than ever before. I have tons of experience to guide me. But I crumble in the big games because i'm not at that level anymore. My nerves are not conditioned for it anymore. I'd have to step up & start playing that level again if I ever wanted to be competitive like that again. That's what i'm saying when I say she'd be stepping up to the next level. It has nothing to do with her skill. It's all about experience & nerve conditioning.

Tourney play has always been & always will be a scapegoat for not gambling. Common story in this game. Some players step up to reach higher levels, some find reasons not to. If I thought I was a favorite in a $2G match, i'd totally dis the tourney & my team would understand AND encourage it. They have subs to fill in for me just in case such an instance occurs. Just sayin. Some players step up, some find reasons not to. I'm not saying either girl is or isn't doing that, but it's beginning to look like as such.

I understand what you're saying but you're looking at the situation from a different perspective than Ms. Andoni. You're looking at it from a gamblers stand point and she is looking at it from a tournament players stand point. They're entirely different mind sets.

The tournament aspect is very important to Ms. Andoni and probably even more so since she & her team mates are last years champions. I've no doubt the plans for this yr were decided upon last yr. This match up just came about and I think it is unfair to give Borana a hard time for not ditching the tournament for a gambling match.

As much as I would like to see this match, I'm not going to knock her for staying true to her team. As a young lady looking to make a name for herself in the pool world and aspiring to one day become pro, I'm sure she was looking forward to the singles tournament at the BCA but has offered to cancel those plans. The way I understand the situation is if she were genuinely trying to back out, she wouldn't offer to cancel those plans to work something out. I could be wrong and we all interpret things differently but this is how I'm interpreting her situation.

Not looking to argue with anyone but shouldn't she have thought of this before agreeing to match up?

I agree that getting use to playing with $1500 of your own money instead of $100 will help most players mental game and get them use to pressure. What I don't agree on is for Borana to ditch her teammates to gamble. She already stated she wouldn't ditch them. Even if they have a sub that is as good as her it's just not the right thing to do. You can gamble anytime, this tournament is once a year. Johnnyt

I agree and said as much yesterday.
She has a full schedule and could have (and maybe should have) said "no". Since she said yes, at least give her a few days or even a couple of weeks to figure out how to work this into her schedule. She is playing in 3 divisions if I remember correctly and that will keep her busy. She has a prior commitment to her team and scotch doubles partner that will come before this match.

You read my mind and verbalized it better than I did.

I'm not giving anybody a tough time, and sincerely apologize if I have.

I can see your point of view and it does make sense. I want to see the match. I think it's exciting to see ladies match up for the game of it, without all the catfight frenzy that usually fuels it. I guess i'm just disappointed to see it go wishy washy after we all thought it was a lock game.

Point taken. But this still leaves everybody assuming that the match will even interfere with any of her schedule play. We all know about assumptions.

He makes a lot of comments that make me shake my head in disbelief.

Again I'll say that they should work the details out via PM or IM and post the details of the match here when they are done. They don't need any help from us. Johnnyt

Like I said in my earlier post... I am willing to give up any of my singles tournament days to play OMG. I have obligations to other people in my other tournaments that they have paid entry fees for.

I want to make this happen.

Singles starts on the 15th although you offered the 16-18 in a post separate from the one above. I would like to play on the 15th since that is the first day of singles for both of us and I'd like to have the off-chance, however miniscule, that I can still make it to a match after we play and being this early in the tournament I think we would have a better chance of being able to play both our match and tournament matches.

Alternatively, if you would like to play barbox 8-ball instead to stay in stroke for your three events, I'm down for that. We would have no problems locating an open table for our match or finding an agreeable time since we would be able to see each others' schedules.

i think they'll dump and chop up the rail. that's just what i think though

There's a wise observation by some ancient long-forgotten nameless philosopher that goes: "He who smelt it, dealt it."

Since the first thing that occurs to you is that we are going to dump and chop up the rail, I am going to surmise that you, personally, have a lot of experience in that exact scenario.

Try not to project your accomplishments, however noble they may be, upon others.

Its really not any of my business bc I do not know either one of these two women but as a fellow "ex action player" I will continue and always have promoted potential action... With that being said I hope this match takes off regardless of the winner.... Lil John Macias

Mr. Macias -- you still doing the carwash thing? ;)

OMG "Happy Camper" WTF

Ummm?????

That's disturbing that the entire room would act like that. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at jealous hater behavior, but I am nonetheless.

Anyway, best of luck to both players. I hope it gets streamed so many people can enjoy it. If there's chat with the stream, there better be a lot of bandwidth and a LOT of moderators! Boyz will be boyz...

The ENTIRE pool room did NOT root against her. I, for one, would like to clarify that.

Peace,
Amanda

Amanda is correct. I never rooted against her either and I was at that tournament. To top it off, several people asked her to autograph their copy of IP that weekend. :)

I will admit one of the players she played I thought was very rude to her, though. :(
