Rodney shows up in Reno

So far all I have seen are excuses.. backhanded, sidehanded or otherwise... And since you post in anonymity I can only assume you identify with him because bad behavior got you banned from somewhere when you didn't feel it was fair? Or you are Hawaiin?? I'm kidding on both of those by the way.....

It's not just Rodney that needs to reinvent himself it's pretty much the whole lot who would be considered the old guard here in the states...

Look around at what professional pool players look and act like from the rest of the world... They are all selling something besides their ability with the cue... That something by and large is character and a professional demeanor......

Chris

Chris just because you don't know me doesn't mean that I post anonymously. Many people on this forum know who I am. Many know me as Mr Wu because I happened to play Mr Wu in the series Deadwood. I also played Mr Wu in Men in Black 3. Many on here know I was on True Blood last season as well as Sons of Anarchy. I don't like to bandy about my name because I already get some of the weirdest mail since I also have been in Star Trek (tv) and Deep Space 9. And they have the craziest of fans.
I have not been banned but I have been 86'd from places in my younger days. I also burned many bridges when I managed to piss directors, writers, and producers off when I was a young aspiring performer. I learned my lesson and now am pretty active and well accepted. As a matter of fact I am in next weeks episode of NCIS LA. Many many good people know who I am on this site. Youre one who doesn't. Nice to meet you.
I also am from the great island of Hawaii. Born and bred and proud of it too. But man I am not bitter. I can just understand the frustrations of any professional trying to make it in a world that is so difficult and with a short shelf life. I ask you to understand that we are all human and we make mistakes and no ones career should just go down the drain with out a little compassion and understanding. If I think back to all the mistakes Ive made Im very glad that Im here with a good family who I can support with children who I am proud of. If there were those who weren't there to understand and forgive I would probably be back in the islands dreaming of what ifs.
For all that Rodney has accomplished in his life I ask you to think if he deserves to be bounced out of the game. I don't think so.

Well, you certainly won't be back on Sons again Mr. Young.

But, you did an excellent job while you were there.

Kim Coates was born and raised 150 miles from us so he is kind of our local hero.

Tigs is one of my favorites. I think it will be last man standing this last season, maybe no one standing.

Kurt Sutter is an amazing writer.

Thanks sir. But you can never tell. When I finished Crank I thought it would be over since they dropped Jason Stathan from a helicopter. Freaked me out when I got a call
to start Crank 2 and that Jason would be resurrected from the grave.
Kim is a great guy and always speaks well of his home town and Canada.
Funny 21 years ago we worked together in a TV movie called Dead Before Dawn with Cheryl Ladd shot in Topeka, Kansas

Perhaps the incident with Rodney is the beginning of a new chapter in professional pool. I think that most of us can agree that it is a shame that his behavior has triggered this new chapter.

We can all only hope that Rodney will add to this improvement in the public's perception of pro players by showing how he can make a come back. At this point it is his responsibility to get himself invited to future events.

His future actions and behavior could lead the way for other players and add to his own stature in the professional circles. Others have done it and he too could contribute to the emerging sport of professional pool.

Fortunately, Rodney is dealing with a well respected and true leader in the field who is more than fair in his dealings. Effort on Rodney's part could go far.

I can't predict Rodney's future and how he will respond to this adversity. But, a player/person can be remembered for many things, not just their titles. Earl is a prime example. Today Earl is thought of as a great player as much as he is a troubled person. It's a shame that one of the greatest players of all time can not be spoken about without mentioning his negative antics too. Earl has no one to blame for that but himself. Rodney isn't on Earls level, in either ability or problems, but he too is responsible for his performances and legacy. Depending on how this current situation shakes out, it may very well dictate Rodney's future.

I think this really sums it up very nicely. Earl should be a great example of what could be Rodneys future.

And in both cases, its a damned shame.

Maybe This is Why

Just wondering why when he was asked to leave the tournament area, he insisted that he be escorted out by security? Sounds like he came to make a scene.

Could be that he has a passive/aggressive side to him.

Passive being " just here to root on some of my friends".

Aggressive being " I'll make security remove me and they will all see just how bad a person Mark is".

Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.

Well, this goes a long way toward explaining why you are such a strident supporter of Rodney. For me, anyway. He is your Hawaiian brah. I commend you for sticking up for your homeboy, Keone.

I think Rodney adds a lot to the game and is a lot of fun to watch play. Most of us here can only dream of possessing the kind of talent he has.

The unfortunate reality in our sport is that there just isn't enough money to go around. It's a rather small pie and lots of people trying to get their slice.

My feelings is that Rodney is a good guy who, like many pro players, is frustrated and he wears his emotions on his shirt sleeve.

Mark Griffin comes across as a forward thinker who is not only looking to grow our sport but he puts a fair amount of money into this effort.

I think this is a case of Rodney's frustrations getting the best of him.

A classic case of biting the hand that feeds you.

Creedo posted in this thread that CSI events accounted for more than 50% of Rodney's income last year. If that was the case then he really should have had that much more sense than he displayed with his facebook posts.

It's not just the prize money won that should be considered, it's also the exposure, the titles and possible new sponsors that a player can enjoy.

I really do hope Mark and Rodney can work things out. It wasn't egregious behavior, just probably a bad decision over the frustration that currently is US Pro Pool.

As our great players come to realize....like Scott Frost....that your still on a dead end street some ''act out'' in different ways. Earl does his thing, Hatch and Rodney have their ways, then there's guys that could see the writing on the wall and changed course. The Rakin family on the east coast is a good example, Michelle a great woman player, became a doctor. Pete Margo years ago got into VHS tapes at its inception. Sigel is still working it and trying to form a league. TKO keeps the lord and his smile up front for all to see and so on. For a player to not choose another course in their life is their choice and the mirror is there for your answers. If your a gambler then your a gambler if your a player then your a player, but to expecting to be both and happy on your later years is tougher action than what one goes through at present, why. Because as one ages, one tends to think they are that much smarter and thus, that person can become more irritating. At times on this board I feel as though I'm raising my girls, having to bring up such basic and simple concerns as to how one goes about living life and accepting its obstacles. That I tire of.

Mr. Morris had a window of opportunity to fix things and did nothing!

Mr. Griffin in my opinion would have accepted a genuine apology.

Waiting til just before a tournament and saying "I am ready to apologize now" now reinstate me ain't genuine!

Maligning in public and apologizing in private ain't fair or right either!

Going covert to garner support and slam CSI ain't right to win reinstatement in the court of public opinion.

Showing up at someone's business after politely told a rule violation and disciplinary code was being enforced is another grievance!

With so many grievances and actions exhibiting a lack of remorse or understanding of his misstep, how could you say reinstatement?

He will have missed zero events and had zero consequences based on your logic.

based upon what the responses have been in this very long thread,
you are in the distinct minority with your opinion that Mark banning (not blackballing, btw)
Rodney from CSI events was unfair.

you say it was wrong but you have provided no specific reason why - just that it's wrong.

imo, Rodney is a grown man and has to understand that there may be consequences
tied to his bad behavior.

Here's why I think it's wrong:

1. Everyone has a right to their opinion, and if the opinion is fairly harmless ("Late fees suck")
then that doesn't really merit 'administrative action'.

2. The punishment wayyyy outstrips the 'crime'. Rodney didn't hurt MG or his business.
I don't believe for a second anyone will read Rodney's comments and decide
not to play in, attend, or watch a CSI event.

But MG's decision really hurts Rodney, effectively costing him thousands,
in an industry where you're already broke all the time. A millionaire NFL/NBA player
can scream racial slurs at someone, and only get fined $10,000.
Rodney's probably going to lose more than that.

The fact that Rodney should have seen it coming, doesn't mean it's not a very harsh punishment.

A simple way to make Rodney understand there are consequences, is to ban him from ONE event.
Not from ALL events, indefinitely.

This is probably the best defense of Rodney, but the fact still remains that the Rocket needs to make good before he gets let back in. I think for far too long Pro's have been able to run wild. If what is happening to Rodney gets him, and other pros to straighten up and fly right, then it's a small price to pay.

I think nearly everyone on this forum, and in the pool world, wants Rodney at the CSI events. On the same token, they also want to see CSI grow these pro events into something more than what they are now. That won't happen with antics like Rodney is pulling, on OR off the table.

Thanks for shedding your anonymity to stand behind your statement, and truly show why you feel the way you do. It makes your statement seem far more substantial than just "I'm a Rodney fan from Hawaii."

Pleasure to make your acquaintance Mr. Wu.

Hey Keone - how is your poker bankroll doing?

I'm not sure it would do anything good at this point but maybe if you intervened for Rodney with MG, that might help. I relayed a story on here recently how I did the same years ago for a player we both know when he was barred from all CSI events.

Here's why I think it's wrong:

1. Everyone has a right to their opinion, and if the opinion is fairly harmless ("Late fees suck")
then that doesn't really merit 'administrative action'.

There is an agreement in place by CSI stating that you can not do this.

2. The punishment wayyyy outstrips the 'crime'. Rodney didn't hurt MG or his business.
I don't believe for a second anyone will read Rodney's comments and decide
not to play in, attend, or watch a CSI event.

I may agree with you on this but it was Mark's call. I believe him to be a reasonable man and if Rodney were to show some genuine contrition over what he did (as opposed to, for instance, showing up in reno when he knew he was not welcome) then I believe he'd be on the road toward reinstatement.

But MG's decision really hurts Rodney, effectively costing him thousands,
in an industry where you're already broke all the time. A millionaire NFL/NBA player
can scream racial slurs at someone, and only get fined $10,000.
Rodney's probably going to lose more than that.

let me change this around a little: But *Rodney's* decision really hurts Rodney, effectively costing him thousands. That's better.

The fact that Rodney should have seen it coming, doesn't mean it's not a very harsh punishment.

I agree, if it doesn't get resolved reasonably soon, it's harsh. Rodney def needs to start the process, imo.

A simple way to make Rodney understand there are consequences, is to ban him from ONE event.
Not from ALL events, indefinitely.

Not necessarily, true.

Good to meet you as well Keone...

I understand and can agree with many parts of it if not entirely the whole post... The last line about Rodney deserving to be kicked out of the game gives me pause... I think unless Rodney shows an understanding of what he did wrong there will continue to be strong support for him in fact getting bounced....

No realization and public acknowledgement followed by an apology and he likely will get no sympathy moving forward....

There were more posts than just the recent ones and I think words may have been even exchanged between Rodney and Mark's ex over the finals... For whatever reasons Rodney has acted like he was being singled out personally and persecuted.. He wants to act like the victim then he needs to make sure he really is one...

Knowing Mark this can be fixed but not over night and not from an outcry of the minority asking for forgiveness on Rodney's behalf... Rodney needs to man up and start by apologizing to Mark, Sunny and CSI on his facebook and then he needs to do it publicly..

I am not saying he needs to come onto AZ and write something but a phone interview on ABR could likely be arranged where he could explain why he made the mistakes he did and ask everyone to accept the fact he is human and also accept his apology....

Any of you who are personal friends need to get behind Rodney doing something like this.. Supporting him in his current actions are just helping to drive him down a road he didn't have to be on.. At some point you reach the point of no return.. Thing is there is no sign on this road as to when that is....

Peace out Wu...

Chris

Mr. Morris plays pool the same way he behaves: from the heart.

He doesn't over-think his shots. He walks up to the table and fires away.

For him, that style works well in pool. It doesn't work so well in business. When dealing with others it helps to carefully think through your strategy and actions and let your head censor your heart.
