A real creep

I agree with your observations and respect what you say. For one of the very rare times Grady was in the blind and should of been respected and treated differently for the player that he once was with the warrior heart that unfortunately he still has. With that said there comes a time when Grady should of evaluated his position and adjusted accordingly or backed up and regrouped.

I think that both the owner of Kolby's and Grady himself were at fault for obvious reasons, and at one time either one could have stopped the developing problem before it escalated. Lets call it a missunderstanding and let it go, but learn from the experience.

Bill Incardona < who respects both sides.

I certainly respect both sides and most of all I respect Mr. Incardona. I did read Gradys book a while back and remember how he used deception when taking peoples, like an art. The phony business cards. Laying down spreads and returning to reap a big harvest later. The value of having someone to give you local information. I mean come on.

Not only that, but he had a section on Don Watson and how the mans skill at pool had deteriorated. And now Grady even after a couple of days to think about it is blasting this guy for what exactly?? Calling him a creep?!! I mean, I live over here in SC next to Grady and I doubt I will ever be in Phoenix but I kinda see the other side and respect it a little more.
Its like Grady is going through what Don went through even if Don was a heavy drinker. Its like the drinking just speeded things up with Don. Why is it a man can still know the game of one pocket, make good three rail kick shots to get out of trouble, make good inventive, innovative shots to move balls over, beat an opponent to the shot and have the game won if you can just run out 4 or 5 loose balls straight in or stop shots, but you run the first one into the rail and miss it by several inches and give opponent the easy shot to mop up. I don't think it is just age...

For the visually impaired could you please explain the fault that the ower had in this?

A player comes into your pool hall and chaims he wants to gamble but does not play cheap, offers you a spot of 9-8, and agrees to play a $400 set with you. Then that player also takes $100 in side action.

At this point is there anything the owner has done that is wrong?

So they play, the owner wins the set. They play another set at even, with no spot, Grady again seemingly takes the $100 more side action, the owner wins again.

OK so now? What has the owner done that is wrong to this point? He got called out to gamble, he agreed to the set game, he played and won.

And the aftermath? The player flips out, says noone respected him, starts to claim he just wanted to play for fun when it is very clear by Fast Lenny's posting that Grady was the instigator in the whole thing. Fun pool could have been played, but Grady wanted to take a guy off for $1000 or so, that would have made him feel happy, instead he lost and now he is pissy about it.

I don't see fault on the owner, if in the happenings above there is fault in how the owner acted then IMO you just destroyed gambling in pool, because the owner adted EXACTLY how he is supposed to, he simply got attacked for doing what every pool playing gambler does, they put their money up and play a match and the winner gets the cash, the problem here is the looser decided to have a temper tantrum about it both in person and on AZBilliards. And that looser happens to be Grqady Mathews, a former champion 1-pocket player who spent much of his life beating people out of their money, most of those people who Grady beat simply took it alot more like men and did not whine and cry about it like we now have Grady doing.

The owner did nothing wrong at all from the story of Fast Lenny, who was there. He was asked to play, offered a spot, and he played and tried to win.

?

I learned all I needed to about Grady during his speech at Derby last year during the one pocket hall of fame inductions.

Would you elaborate on what was said during that speech? I didn't get to hear it. Thanks.

Also, reading some of these posts reminds me of something said to me a long time ago; "You can find sympathy in the dictionary between shiit and syphlis."

green rep to you, sir.

And add to this the fact that Grady specified to Lenny that he preferred to play the owner rather than the ringer that was already on a table practicing. And so they made a game.

Then after losing and whining about it, the owner offered to refund the money to Grady. What? Is this really the guy who literally wrote the book on taking people down using deception?

With all due respect to those who feel Grady deserves a free pass over this incident, I wholeheartedly disagree. At the end of the day, he is one of the world's foremost authorities on the game of pool and hustling. I'd like to be charitable but I honestly don't think it's warranted here. And yes, this takes into account recent family problems and possible health issues.

Grady went into Kolby's, aka the Lion's Den, and he lost some of his pride. insert rimshot here...

Best,
Brian kc

Grady is dead wrong

I was at SHOOTERS in OLATHA when GRADY lost to PARICA and walked up to him several minutes later and sucker punched PARICA in the face.I lost all respect for him then. Now he comes on here and wants respect because he was once a great player. He asked for the game ,he gave the weightand he lost.HE wants to blame his poor judgements on the pool room owner, and publically embarrass the owner who did nothing wrong. Another cowardly act!!!! GRADY cant play any more ,cant make 2 balls in a row and wants to blame other peoplefor taking his money. He prides himself in conning people for a living and now wants to complain he was conned?????? I hope he gets 20,000 and plays the owner again,I will be there and bet the farm!!!!

Now that the cat is our of the bag on how good Jimmy is....aka any future action is probably knocked...I will add my local knowledge since I frequent Kolby's.

What has not really been said is that Jimmy would rather go fishing than play pool....I very rarely see him play when he is there.....He must have been asked to play because NEVER see him ask anyone for a game.....unless it is a game of Golden Tee.....Now...if he is asked...he will play......but he usually is asked for $10 or $20 games....

I have NEVER seen him lay down...He plays to win...when he plays.

There was NO hustle on Jimmy's part...If Jimmy was going to hustle Grady he would have dumped in order to get Grady to up the bet.

I was not there....but my educated guess of the situation was that Grady did not want to play Gus....AND wanted to play for more money than anyone else had at the time (except Jimmy)....so Jimmy was forced to play.....Too bad for Grady that he picked on the wrong mark.

If you are a hustler (past or present) Kolby's is probably NOT the first place you want to look for action in the Phoenix area......It would be like going to LA and making a beeline to Hard Times.

Grady cant seem to resist injecting some sort of kink no matter what he is supposd to be talking about. His book Bet High kiss Low is a prime example.

I heard him once at some ceremony- Next thing you know, he is talking about a well known player and his proclivity for wearing women's clothes. Had nothing to do w anything-just came from nowhere. I imagine his speech at the DCC was similarly injected.

I remember hearing about that, but I never heard the particulars of how/why that happened...would you share that info, here, or by pm, if you'd rather.....thanks.

Hopefully not by PM, I would love to hear what set that off as well. I am of the mind if a person is willing to sucker punch someone in public they are not exactly entitled to annonimity and secrecy when it comes to the action after that.

Is this really true???

I can't believe what I am reading.

A guy that has made a living of robbing/stealing/hustling "suckers" for decades is crying over losing a $ 1000 match-up? (And on top of it, over a match-up where the winner adjusted the handicap and even offered the money back?)

OMG...

Really? I would be in no hurry to bet on a rematch after this much wolfing about it.

Although this sounds like Grady going off (again) and probably is, the money in the middle could be there just to set up the people betting on the side.

It doesn't hurt to be careful.

Haha, Jimmy and Gradys distaste for one another is very real, probably at the level of John Schmidt and Danny Harriman so there would be no biz there and Jimmy is not that type of guy.

GRADY and JIMMY rematch???

Scott Frost is a friend of mine for many years and Everything i have ever heard about FAST LENNY has been positive. So any game they are in I am comfortable betting whatever.I think GRADY was blowing smoke and knows he cant play anymore at even a local shortstop level. His offer at 20,000 was even a bigger joke. He knows he cant win and now he knows the readers understand he was trying to con us into disliking the room owner.Disgusting and shows GRADYS true character!!!

Pretty funny Grady sucker punching Parica. I would have loved to see that if he did while he was an old man over losing a set. Now we are getting somewhere with this thread. Elaborate on Grady throwing punches after losses.

How about some piggy back action

Between the 4 of these guys?

Grady sucker punch Parica

Remember Parica is all of 5foot and 120 lbs. IF he would have sucker punched DENNIS HATCH they would be still looking for GRADYS glasses and teeth.
