anyone else have video proof of making this shot?

I have a lot of trouble with that cut shot. Seems like I always over cut it too much.

I know the feeling -- every time I attempt it, I overcut the object ball into the same pocket I shot the cue ball from.

 You're prabably using too much English. :grin-square:

Also, make sure you clean your balls. ;)

no video

Just tried it 10 times.Banked it in the corner twice, cut it just inside the first diamond twice, missed it completely 6 times....

I wonder if there be a technique to this shot other then just being extremely accurate?

yeah...you apparently have to shoot it one-handed for it to even have a prayer of going.

I've tried it maybe a dozen times and never made it. The closest I came was about 3 inches on my 8ft Olhausen. I need to give it a try with dirtier pool balls, maybe that way I can get a little more "throw" in the shot.

Awesome shot Bob!

The shot's probably not possible with clean, polished balls unless you get really, really lucky and chalk transfers from the tip to the cue ball and then happens to land on the contact point. I'm not sure if this is possible on a single stroke for this position, but I have done it once intentionally with the cue ball much closer to the object ball.

Joe Tucker has a video of a similar "impossible" bank that he makes 3 out of 4 tries. I heard he tried it later on clean equipment and couldn't come close. I suspect that the legendary road players who are said to have shot such super spin shots as propositions either relied on rarely cleaned equipment or "happened" to palm the object ball with the same hand they chalked with.

Anyway, I think of the cut off the spot as a "one hour shot" in that I'd bet on making it in an hour.

As for fundamentals, when playing pool I stand like a pool player, which is to say like Irving Crane and Willie Mosconi. I'm probably too old to change. On the other hand, when playing snooker, I stand a lot more like a snooker player, back permitting.

...who were a bit shaky and inconsistent when it came to pocketing balls, especially if we're talking about more than 3 or 4 in a row.

(3 or 4 hundred, that is.)

link?

This link will not show up on my govt work computer. Is it on youtube? If it is, please give me the description instead of the link, it is too hard to get all the letters and numbers plugged into my phone...I cannot cut and paste on the phone. It is better to tell me search words, like "Jewett impossible shot" or however it is described on youtube. Thanks!

first one is: Impossible cut shot goes
second one is: 90-degree 'impossible' pool cut-shot by Bob Jewett

Unfortunately I keep my equipment pretty clean at all times. I guess that shot won't happen in my basement.

If you keep trying, eventually the chalk spot on the cue ball will land on the object ball. It's just more likely if you "help" the friction.

I still don't think the shot is possible even just reasonably clean balls.
OK, but proving that something is impossible is really hard. I imagine that if you offered the right bet, you would see the shot made.

lol...yeah, pretty much impossible to prove the impossible.

i've offered a freeroll to locals....noone has taken it.

i'm not gonna go crazy....but i'd be glad to pay to see it...but pretty much guarantee it would have to be in person. any payment against video proof would have to stand a bunch of my ridiculous scrutiny.

A few old guys I knew when I was a kid could make it pretty regularly. It's a cool shot because of the slow speed needed to spin it back to the pocket. really cool shot, closest I've ever come is an inch from making it. I'll see if I can make it one-handed on film.

Yeah, see the successful attempt at the 37 hour mark of the video!

Just kidding Jesse, it really wouldn't surprise me at all if you made it on the first try. :grin-square:

Happy new year, buddy.
