Yesterday I attended the Maryland State 9-Ball Bar Table Championships and Matt Clatterbuck played Max Schlothaure a 4 ahead for $2000.. Max started out ahead. They where playing one pocket and the games where taking for ever.. They where grinding it out for several hours.. Matt finally got 2 games on his side and Max pulls the post down and pays Matt a $1000 for the two games he was down... A 4 ahead averages to $500 a game, but the money was posted for a 4 ahead... I dont think he should have been able to do that... Matt told him he could not pull the post.. Max pulled it down and said we can play another time and bet $10,000.

he should have demanded that they finish the set they started

Max has been at those moves all his life & learned them from the best, geese, nickie, fat wane, baldwin the snake. When you learn & play at jack & jills, you first learn all the moves, its the law.

sounds to me like he got scared and wanted to save some gas money. what's to say he would'nt back out for the 10'000? i would not play him again unless someone was holding the money.

That's nothing short of a forfeit meaning he should have surrendered the full amount. Losing after completing the full 4 ahead, or pulling up early is nothing other than "Loss of Match" period.

Sounds like he thawed the freezeout.

Not a very wise move depending on who you're playing.

Next time, he'll do the same thing. I'd make sure the money was held by someone who won't let it happen.

Should of let someone else hold the money, I would of caused an issue if that were to happen to me no questions asked. I hate people like that

I'm betting even money it was Matt's break! This kind of thing happens quite a bit, but usually when both players agree to take down the money, and pay off whatever is owed. In the situation described here, the deciding factor could be who is the bigger, tougher guy. Max must be a big guy or have some good back up. That kind of stuff won't fly some places.

Jay, believe me when i say matt would break max in 1/2 but matt is to good of guy to start sheit while a tourney is going on,matt's in the gym as much as the pool room.

I would be none too happy if someone pulled that cowardly cheap move on me. (I'm taking it as gospel Max grabbed and ran without room for discussion)

I have never talked to Matt, but he came to Detroit to play Ronnie W. Ronnie beat him bad, Matt and his crew were classy people. They paid off and went home, I have a lot of respect for Matt, he showed a lot of class. Tom

Although this sounds horrible on face value, if you gamble enough, you will see this happen several times throughout your career, and probably experience it yourself personally. I don't think its a big deal. Sure it might sting at first. But the guy got out with the money, and even some ammunition he can use to bark up a game for next time they play.

You guys have to remember there are no hard and fast rules in gambling. Even if you spell out the rules, things are bound to be missed, and in the heat of the moment, the guy might intentionally break them.

Just move on.

And for sure play the guy again. I've seen lots of situations where a move was pulled and the victim didn't want to play the guy ever again because his pride was hurt. While that is true, the person who pulled the move then goes on to dump money to everyone else.

You have to forgive in gambling.

My opinions of course.

best handle on this

A little annoying but he didn't try to take down the money and not pay anything as many a person tries to do when the set isn't finished. Paying for the games he was down tells me he is at least decent action if not great action.

I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry to cut myself off from somebody that will post two dimes or more. As others have said, I might have it posted with a neutral party next time though.

Bottom line, hitting balls around on a table for several hours for a thousand dollars beats hell out of going out and earning it.

A bet was placed, unless he had an emergency... the full amount should have been lost.

If you place a bet at a casino and it doesn't look like you can win, I don't think you have a "half buy-out" option.

In Blackjack, most casinos give the players an option called "Surrender", where the players can forfeit half of their bet immediately after the hands are dealt.

They actually started out at 5-ahead for $2,000. After a while they got back to even and Max wanted to play for $1,000 per game. Matt was not flush and did not want to fire just two barrels at the guy. So they adjusted and played 4-ahead for the $2,000.

When I left at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning Matt had just lost to Painter in the tournament, so I guess what happened in the OP's message occurred afterward.

Anyway, Matt is a stand-up guy and everyone likes and respects him, his game and his gamble. Max has a long gambling history and most everyone likes him too. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about either player. Both are seasoned gamblers and players, but I think Max may have a little more road experience. Matt is a hard-working family-man...:)

Anyway, these guys see each other all the time in various regional events so they will play again. I can't imagine they wouldn't...and if there is bad blood between them over this...which I doubt...they would both get over it in favor of possible future action.

I could get what really happened from the horse's mouth but I trust what I know of both them well enough to post this.

Not the first time this has happened, won't be the last. Decent outcome to prorate the games. Acceptable enough for me.

I agree. A weak move but perhaps we dont know the entire story.

If Matt was willing to risk 2000 and Max only 1000, then he was essentially giving 2-1 on the money.
